Abstract

As a form of visual media, Animal Crossing: New Horizons (Nintendo 2020) is a social simulation game developed by Nintendo featuring beautiful visual designs set against a natural backdrop and iconic characters. It became one of the world’s most popular games during the COVID-19 pandemic, when people were required to stay at home. Previous studies have discussed the gameplay, the relationship between Animal Crossing: New Horizons and its popularity during the pandemic, and the visual backgrounds; however, few studies have examined the character visuals, which are the game’s main attraction. This study aims to examine the visualizations of the main characters in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which have made the game a phenomenon since its launch in March 2020. The method used in this study is descriptive-qualitative to describe the characteristics of the main player and non-player characters (NPCs) in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Data collection was conducted through literature review and direct observation of the game. Character analysis was conducted using the Manga Matrix Theory approach to describe the characteristics of the main NPCs studied, resulting in detailed character designs for sixteen main NPCs, broken down into a matrix of form, costume, and personality.  Keywords: Animal Crossing: Game Characters, New Horizons, Visual Games.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the application of mise-en-scène on facial gesture of animated characters in Public Service Advertisement (PSA) "Sasa and Wiwit" produced by the Palm Oil Plantation Fund Management Agency (BPDPKS). The focus of the research is how the characters' facial expressions support the delivery of messages about the benefits of palm oil. The research used a qualitative method with data in the form of screenshots of scenes featuring facial expressions. The analysis was conducted using a mise-en-scène approach that pays attention to visual elements such as eyes, eyebrows, lips, and head shape. Allan Pease's nonverbal communication theory and Paul Ekman's basic emotion expression theory were used as the basis for interpreting the meaning of facial expressions. The results show that Sasa and Wiwit's facial expressions highlight positive emotions such as happiness, friendliness, and openness. Elements such as open round eyes, subtly arched eyebrows, and smiling lips on Sasa and open curved lips on Wiwit are able to build an emotional connection with the audience. The shape of the head resembling a palm kernel strengthens the visual identity of the ad. This finding confirms the importance of facial expression design in reinforcing the social message of animation. This research contributes to the study of mise-en-scène in non-commercial animation and serves as a practical guide for PSA makers. The limitation of the research is that it only analyzes one scene, so further studies are needed with a wider scope of objects and visual elements. Keywords: Animation, Facial Gesture, Palm Oil

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the use of ideology in the Ramayana advertisement titled “Bahagianya adalah Bahagiaku” (Your Happiness Is My Happiness) by employing discourse analysis as the method for its analysis. This study employs a qualitative research design, utilizing Norman Fairclough’s discourse analysis model. Discourse analysis is used to identify linguistic communication as an exchange between speakers and listeners—a personal activity whose form is determined by its social purpose. The data sources used by the author to support this research were obtained from two sources: the primary data source the 2017 “His Happiness Is My Happiness” version of the Ramayana advertisement and secondary data sources, which included books, reports, and other texts to support the theory. The researcher obtained secondary data from books, journals, the internet, articles, and other sources. Thus, it can be seen that the concept of discourse operates within both discursive and non-discursive practices used to present a system of consumerist and capitalist ideology wrapped in the sacred values of Islamic teachings, thereby making these commercial advertisements appear normal and reasonable even though the reality depicted in them often does not fully align with everyday life.
