Abstract

Interprofessional collaboration becomes an important issue in implementing patient safety program. With their respective expertise in the collaboration, physicians and nurses play significant roles. However, work values are less reviewed in the context of interprofessional collaboration. This study aimed to describe the differences of work values between the physicians and nurses. The hypothesis of this study was that there are differences between work values of physicians and those of nurses. Data were collected through questionnaires given to 27 physicians and 80 nurses. Using independent sample T-test were found six differences of work values between physicians and nurses, i.e. self-direction, hedonism, universality, benevolence, conformity and security. The implications of the work value differences will be discussed further. Keywords: interprofessional collaboration, values, work values

Abstract

Abstract

Substance abuse among adolescents and young adults is a significant global public health concern with complex consequences. Understanding the interplay between risk and protective factors is vital for developing effective prevention and intervention strategies. This systematic review aims to synthesize knowledge on these factors across diverse cultural contexts. Adhering to PRISMA guidelines, a systematic literature search was performed in four databases: PubMed, Scopus, PsycINFO, and Web of Science. Keywords related to substance abuse, risk and protective factors, and relevant populations were used, focusing on studies published between 2014 and 2023 involving adolescents and young adults with either quantitative or qualitative designs. From an initial pool of 3,152 articles, 36 studies met the inclusion criteria and underwent thematic analysis. The findings reveal significant interacting risk factors: social and environmental risks, including permissive peer influences, high-risk settings, and substance availability; familial risks, such as lack of parental supervision and unstable family dynamics; and psychological risks, such as sensation-seeking, impulsivity, and mental health issues.  Moreover, genetic predispositions interact with environmental exposures. Protective factors, such as strong family bonds, positive peer relations, resilience, prosocial behaviours, and community support, mitigate these risks. The review’s findings are aligned with Social Influence, Attachment, and Sensation-Seeking and Impulsivity theories, emphasizing the complex dynamics between risks and protective factors. While protective factors counter risks, the intricate interactions necessitate addressing multiple influences concurrently. The limitations of cross-sectional studies underscore the need for longitudinal research, exploring temporal and causal pathways within diverse populations using robust frameworks.

Abstract

The Zaltman Metaphor Elicitation Technique (ZMET) is a qualitative research method employed to elicit individuals' subconscious thoughts, feelings, and experiences by exploring metaphors. This systematic review, encompassing 47 studies published between 2019 and 2023, demonstrates that ZMET is frequently utilised within marketing and tourism, focusing primarily on perception, experience, and meaning. Principal findings indicate that the modifications to Storytelling and Missed Images are the most commonly implemented, whilst combinations with in-depth interviews and grounded theory are prevalent. Thematic analysis identified five principal themes: experience and emotion, meaning and perception, identity and self, values and beliefs, and decision-making. ZMET effectively investigated these themes, particularly within contexts involving complex emotions and experiences. This review concludes that ZMET remains a relevant and adaptable method within qualitative research. Its core strength lies in its capacity to uncover hidden layers of meaning, whilst its weaknesses pertain to analytical complexity and potential subjectivity. Implications and recommendations for best practice, including the necessity for meticulous planning, comprehensive interviewer training, and robust data triangulation, are also discussed concerning the future development and application of ZMET.
