Abstract

Sponges are organisms associated with coral reefs and have potential as pharmaceutical raw materials. One of the problems is that most people are not aware of the importance of this ecosystem and still use fishing gear that is not environmentally friendly, this causes the coral reef ecosystem to also suffer damage. This community service aims to educate and provide technical guidance to the younger generation of Lalowaru Village about the benefits of sponges and how to transplant sea sponges. The youth group was chosen as the target because during this Covid-19 period the youth organization in Lalowaru Village, South Konawe Regency did not go to schools as usual, so this education can provide knowledge that can be applied in protecting the aquatic environment. The implementation method consists of two stages, namely the first stage of field observations including licensing with village officials and preliminary study interviews and the second stage of socialization and transplantation practices. The activity was carried out for two days with 10 participants. Measurement results were concluded through interviews from before carrying out activities and after service activities. The results of the training and mentoring activities show that all target audiences understand the benefits of sponges as pharmaceutical raw materials that can be developed, as well as transplantation techniques. This increase in the knowledge of the young generation of youth organizations occurred after technical guidance through this service.

Abstract

Microplastics are emerging pollutants increasingly detected in coastal waters and may disrupt marine ecosystem functioning as well as pose potential risks to human health. This study aimed to analyze the spatial–vertical distribution of microplastic abundance and characteristics in the coastal waters of Raha City. Sampling was conducted at three stations representing an anthropogenic activity gradient: the harbor/fish landing port (Station I), the tourism–residential area (Station II), and the river mouth (Station III). At each station, samples were collected at three depths (surface, mid-water, and near-bottom) using a plankton net, then filtered and microscopically identified based on microplastic type and color. The results showed a consistent spatial gradient, with the highest mean abundance at Station I (5.58 particles/m³), followed by Station III (4.45 particles/m³), and the lowest at Station II (1.87 particles/m³). Vertically, microplastic abundance tended to be higher in the surface and mid-water layers than near the bottom, indicating the dominance of low-density particles remaining suspended in the water column. Microplastic characteristics were dominated by fibers across all stations, while black-colored particles were most frequently observed, accounting for >30% at each station. These findings confirm the strong contribution of fisheries–harbor activities and land-based waste inputs (particularly via the river mouth) as the main sources of microplastics in the study area. This study provides important baseline data on the three-dimensional distribution of microplastics in the coastal waters of Raha City and underscores the need to strengthen land-based waste management and regulate marine-related activities in the area.

Abstract

Microplastics can interact with coral surfaces and tissues, yet information on their distribution among structural sections of coral colonies remains limited. This study assessed microplastic morphotypes and abundance in tabulate Acropora colonies from Labuan Beropa waters, South Konawe, Indonesia. Sampling was conducted at two stations representing a densely inhabited fishing area and a site influenced by a river mouth and fishing vessels. Fifteen colonies were selected at each station, and paired 4-cm fragments were collected from the colony tip and near the basal section, producing 60 samples. Organic material was digested using 10% KOH, filtered through Whatman No. 42 paper, and visually examined under a binocular microscope at 40x magnification. Four suspected microplastic morphotypes were recorded: fiber, fragment, film, and foam. Fiber was the dominant morphotype in all station-section combinations. The highest abundance was recorded at the colony tip of Station II (21.2 particles individual-1), whereas the lowest was foam at the same station and section (0.5 particles individual-1). Descriptively, total abundance was higher at colony tips than near the basal sections at both stations. Water temperature was 30 degrees C, salinity was 31 ppt, and current velocity ranged from 0.05 to 0.07 m s-1. The results indicate non-uniform intra-colony distribution and suggest that riverine inputs, domestic activities, and fisheries may contribute to particle exposure. Polymer confirmation, contamination blanks, and paired statistical analyses are recommended for future studies.
