Abstract

Hate comments on digital platforms, particularly social media, pose a significant threat to online investigations and present a complex issue for linguistic culture. Previous studies have mainly focused on the analysis of moderation strategies regarding this type of language use on the internet. In contrast, little attention has been given to identifying which hate comments on the internet are considered problematic. The current study investigates the phenomena of Indonesian netizens’ hate comments regarding the presidential election in 2024 on YouTube talk shows uploaded in 2023. By analyzing 315 datasets using Nvivo software, it shows that early warning (43%) is mostly employed by Indonesian netizens, followed by dehumanization and demonization (21%), violence and incitement (19%), and offensive language (17%) respectively. Moreover, it is found that anonymity and personality traits are the factors contributing to hate comments related to the 2024 presidential election. The factors influence Indonesian netizens in early-warning hate comments. The implications of the present study highlight the importance of examining the online behavior and language usage in online communication among Indonesian netizens. This understanding can help in mitigating hate comments on online platforms and in society as a whole.

Abstract

The L2 setting plays a significant role in pragmatic development. Moreover, the study abroad context provides the potential for the development of pragmatic competence. However, L2 learners may not perform according to native speakers’ norms. The present study aims to explore the relationship between personal experiences and L2 pragmatic development among Indonesian students during study abroad. The data were collected from students’ conversations on WeChat since the participants involved in the study are Indonesian students who are currently pursuing their degrees in China. In-depth interviews were also conducted to obtain detailed information related to participants’ personal experiences during study abroad. In addition, English and Chinese are the language instructions used in classrooms for formal and informal communications. The results of the study show that Indonesian students employ four pragmatic functions, namely thanking, complimenting, requesting, and self-praising. Surprisingly, requesting is the most frequent strategy employed by Indonesian students enrolled in English, while the thanking strategy is mainly employed by Indonesian students enrolling in Chinese-taught programs. Moreover, their pragmatic development during study abroad is affected by four factors, including pragmatic knowledge, L2 proficiency, intercultural competence and social interactions, and individual variation. In contrast, these factors were highly used in complimenting strategy.

Abstract

Although several linguists have examined the studies on study abroad (SA), limited studies have focused on online study-abroad contexts. The current study investigates the production of pragmatic routine and its influence on online sociocultural adaptation during online study abroad. This study involved Indonesian students in English and Chinese-taught programs at Beihang University, China. As a mixed method, this study uses Vocabulary Knowledge Scale (VKS) and Sociocultural Adaptation Scale (SCAS) to measure the students’ pragmatic routines production and online sociocultural adaptation. VKS scale is used to investigate the expression categories, including expressions of thanking, requesting, complementing, and greeting. In addition, SCAS is also used to explore the students’ sociocultural aspects, cognitive aspects, and behavioral situations. As a result, the study shows that most Indonesian students enrolling in Chinese and English-taught programs tend to produce pragmatic routines even though the Chinese aspect is produced more than the English aspect. Furthermore, there is also a positive contribution to the production of pragmatic routine and its development influenced by sociocultural adaptation during online study abroad.

Abstract

Language serves as a communication tool. It is made up of signs and symbols. Depending on the nations in which it is utilized, it exhibits different patterns. Language has a critical role in sustaining our social lives in this age of globalization. In Indonesia, English is the foreign language that is typically taught in schools. Because Indonesia is home to many different ethnic groups and languages, the primary language spoken there is a local language known as the mother tongue. As a unifying language, Indonesian is the second language. As an international language, English has also been learned in every region. Furthermore, English is not flawless due to the significant influence of regional or dialectal languages on pronunciation. Students at Gorontalo also study English as a side subject. The author applies the method to finish this article in a way that is scientific. The research's methodology and data analysis technique demonstrate how data is retrieved and examined. Both library research and field research were the methods and techniques the author employed to gather and analyze data for this aim. Following an analysis of the research on Indonesian-English characteristics among Gorontalo people, the author discovers that the Gorontalo people have a habit of saying things like "aaa..," "eee..," and "mmm." Additionally, they typically use English, but they employ Indonesian grammar. The reason for this is that the local dialect or language continues to have an influence.

Abstract

Foreign investment has the potential to develop infrastructure and strengthen local economies. However, clear transparency in governance, environmental sustainability, and equitable benefits for such communities are still questioned. Previous research that examines foreign investment in Indonesian tourism has mainly focused on more established destinations, such as Bali and Lombok whilst only a few is identified about how emerging areas like Saronde Island in Gorontalo could design sustainable investment contracts. This study uses a qualitative analysis from the collected data in social media (Facebook, X, and Instagram) to examine the feasibility and challenges of foreign investment in Saronde Island, Gorontalo. The results indicate that, though foreign investment can boost tourism growth, fragile regulatory and environmental protection frameworks may threaten its sustainability in the longer term period. In comparison with other island tourism destinations, policy innovations, transparent governance, and inclusive stakeholder engagement are decisive factors. Furthermore, this study provides a way forward to the literature of mining investment governance for sustainable investment growth in Indonesia. It also points to significant regulatory and institutional developments necessary to balance economic, environmental, and social accountability. Future studies are encouraged to include primary stakeholder perspectives and investigate hybrid investment models that combine local and foreign investments to guarantee sustainable tourism development in Gorontalo.
