Abstract

This study examines the key strategies behind the success of community-based tourism in Bejiharjo Village, Gunung Kidul, Yogyakarta which has become a model of good practice compared to other less successful initiatives. Using a phenomenological approach, this study draws on two years of the researchers’ involvement in a local tourism development program. Through in-depth interviews and sustained engagement between 2022-2024, the research explores how the community articulated its aspirations and developped tourism strategies from the ground up. Findings shows that community initiative plays a critical role in encouraging the community to take ownership and lead tourism development. This challanges the assumption that community empowerment must be externally driven and highlights how meaningful local participation can lead to more sustainable and socially grounded outcomes. The study identifies six key strategies of community empowerment: (1) initiating, (2) networking, (3) mobilizing, (4) building trust, (5) protecting, and (6) harmonizing (integrating efforts for long-term sustainability). These findings provide insights for the government and stakeholders in tourism development to plan better programs resulting in more benefits for improving community welfare.

Abstract

Gunungkidul Regional Spatial Plan states that Sepanjang and Drini Beach are designated areas for tourism zone, even Drini Beach is included in the development of a Fish Landing Base in Gunungkidul. The fact is that the Sepanjang-Drini coastal area is one of the susceptible area to storm tide that occur repeatedly every year. This research aims to study the land use susceptibility in the  Sepanjang-Pantai Drini coastal area based on the storm tide model. Tidal wave analysis conducted by modeling inundation caused by run-up height of tidal waves scenario, that overlayed with land use map. The susceptible area to tidal waves based on 2.99 meter wave height scenario in the Sepanjang Coast to Drini Beach is 4.82 hectares. The land use that mostly affected by tidal waves is an open area land use of sand beach. Stalls are the ones most susceptible building to tidal waves, where there are at least 130 units located in tidal waves susceptible area.

Abstract

Batik Parang Kaliurang is a women's business group located in South Kaliurang, Sleman,Yogyakarta. Batik Parang Kaliurang existed until 2020, marked by many orders from within and outside the country. Several marketing support activities have also been followed, such as participating in exhibitions, competitions, training, and other activities. Conditions changed when the COVID-19 pandemic occurred with several government regulations to break the chain of virus spread, one of which was social distancing. The impact of this regulation is the lack of visitors to the showroom so that from 2020 to 2021, Parang Kaliurang batik will almost not produce. This is partly because Parang Kaliurang batik does not have media for product marketing or digital exhibitions. This community service aims to regenerate transactions in Parang Kaliurang batik by expanding the marketing network through cyberspace. However, this facility is also not accessible because of several obstacles such as production space and the ability of human resources to operate technology.
