Abstract

From the colonial period to the Covid-19 pandemic, coffee cafes in Jakarta have seen significant changes. Coffee shops as public places must adjust to the pandemic situation by reducing their operating activity to prevent the virus from spreading. This adaption process then prompts coffee industry participants to come up with ways to keep coffee consumption habits consistent, such as employing outdoor spaces that are similar to rural aspects in urban settings. This study will examine the transition of coffee shops in the new normal era of the Covid-19 pandemic, building on prior research on the meaning of traditional-modern coffee shops and the performance of interior design in coffee shops. In addition, this research aims at the meaning of open space and how it relates to consumption patterns. The research method used is a literature review with in-depth analysis in order to solve issues that are related to the subject. The findings reveal that the current open space trend is a negotiation between urban-rural and public-private places. This tendency, however, poses a dilemma in terms of the monetization of the artistic portrayal of rural components adopted by coffee shops in Jakarta.

Abstract

Based on digital track records, the number of coffee shops in Jakarta has increased since 2015. This is an indication that coffee shops are not only used as a place to enjoy coffee but a place to meet friends, do assignments, or just take pictures. Coffee shops are used as a space that represents trends in urban lifestyles. This article aims to analyze coffee trends in Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi by investigating the uploads of coffee shops recommendation contents from the @jakartacoffeespot Instagram account. By using textual analysis, 262 uploads of @jakartacoffeespot within a period of 2 years are analyzed. It is found that there are patterns of coffee shops’ naming using a combination of Indonesian and foreign languages. This emphasizes global-local culture interactions. In addition, the analysis also shows the hegemonic masculinity which is articulated through industrial designs and dark colors that dominate the architectural style of coffee shops in Jakarta and its surroundings in the 2019-2021 period. The findings of this study show that urban societies are multicultural and dominated by masculinity characteristics.

Abstract

Rapid technology advancements, particularly social media Instagram, have brought people’s daily lives and urban environments into the domain of visual culture. Instagram’s young users are presently sharing motivational quotes adopted in activities and work with the use of a skyscraper as a background. The trend of encouraging quotes and skyscaraper photographs exemplifies the community’s orientation, which refers to a lifestyle or a typical phenomenon of Indonesian urban culture. This article intends to investigate the image of society by using Instagram to post encouraging phrases and patterns of space production-consumption using images of buildings taken by young people. The method of social semiotics was employed in this article with qualitative approach. Guy Debord’s Spectacle of Society (1967) theory and the postmodernist perspective are also discussed. Instagram creates a dichotomy with its picture of modern society and stunning metropolitan areas. Consumption and self-commodification are discussed in the context of capitalism through artistically potrayed public life performances on Instagram. As a result, a new concept of conflicting urban spaces emerges. On the one hand, an idealized portrayal of communal life and urban space exists, while the other side of a city with dense populations is ignored. This study is limited the social media platform Instagram and the Jakarta metropolitan area in Indonesia. There has never been a conversation about the convergence of urban settings with social media as a spectacle before.

Abstract

Culinary practices have always been considered as social and cultural activities signifying ideas of continuity and transformation regarding one‟s culture and identity. As migration happens, people move from their hometown and recreate familiar food and flavors in their new home. Therefore, the study of culinary practices will reveal the dynamics of constant negotiation between having to trace back the familiar taste, for example by using inherited recipes, with the necessity to innovate and reproduce meals from their hometown with new ingredients and materials found in the new place. Furthermore, in an urban setting that has been heavily influenced with a variety of culinary practices from other locales in Indonesia or from other countries, culinary practices in Jakarta could no longer be analyzed as merely everyday activities as they have become an arena of contestation and negotiation. This research discusses how two up-scale restaurants, Suntiang (a Padangnese-Japanese fusion restaurant) and Marco (a self-proclaimed Padang peranakan restaurant), re-inscribe Padangnese cuisines and make new meanings on „old‟ traditional delicacies.

Abstract

The phenomenon of sharenting refers to the practice of parents, particularly mothers, sharing personal information in the form of text, photos, or videos about their child-rearing experiences and journey to parenthood on social media platforms. Social media, as a space of simulation, is considered to present an idealized version of parenting, showcasing perfect moments and achievements. This paper critically explores how the phenomenon of sharenting, especially by millennial mothers in Indonesia, contributes to the construction of family life representations that underlie parents' adaptation to idealized parenting standards on social media platforms. The paper samples sharenting content from several Instagram accounts considered as Indonesian “momfluencers”. Baudrillard's concept of hyperreality is employed to highlight the blurring of boundaries between reality and simulation in parenting practices, which can create unrealistic expectations for parents. By analyzing the intersection of sharenting and hyperreality as observed on the Instagram accounts of the sampled momfluencers, this paper discusses the implications for parents who may feel incapable or pressured to meet such parenting standards.
