Abstract

The cross-cultural adaptation in different ethnic and religious communities is not an easy process. Stereotype factors, prejudice, and ethnocentrism will affect the process. In most cases, the cross-cultural adaptation process cannot be optimal and cause psychological pressure and disharmonious interactions between immigrants and hosts. However, the Javanese-Muslim Pagayaman and Balinese Hindus can adapt well. The success of the cross-cultural adaptation is supported by the cultural competence and local wisdom of the two communities. This study aims to determine the cultural competence and local wisdom of Javanese-Muslim Pagayaman and Balinese Hindus in the village of Pagayaman located in Buleleng Regency, Bali Province, during the cross-cultural adaptation process. The study uses the theory of cultural adaptation from Young Yun Kim and a qualitative approach and case study methods from Robert K Yin. Research participants are community and religious leaders. The findings show that the adaptation model performed by both Balinese Hindus and Pagayaman Muslims is integration. Successful adaptation is supported by cultural competencies such as respect (valuing other cultures,  cultural diversity), openness (to intercultural learning and people from other cultures, withholding judgment), curiosity, and discovery (tolerating ambiguity and uncertainty).

Abstract

The role of parents is very important in communicating sex education to children. However, in this study, the researchers focused on communication between families of different cultures, namely parents from Indonesia and the Netherlands in providing sex education to adolescents. Every culture has a different view of sex education. It can be seen that Indonesian culture still considers sex education taboo, so few parents discuss sex education for teenagers. At the same time, in the Netherlands, there are programs on sex education so that children can get it and avoid its unhealthy effects. The study aimed to determine: 1) family communication patterns in sex education by parents to adolescents in families of different cultures; 2) knowing the communication barriers faced and the role of family communication in discussing sex education in families of different cultures. The theory used in this research is Communication Accommodation. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study method. The data collection technique used is in-depth interviews. The findings show that the communication pattern shown by families with Dutch Sundanese culture is a balanced split pattern and the Dutch-Balinese family shows an equality split pattern of communication. The communication pattern that takes place is driven by intercultural relationships that are open and mutually respectful. The obstacles found were differences in mindsets and ways of communicating in discussing sexual problems in children and the three families of participants showed using a convergence strategy in communicating and interacting with family members, namely by adjusting their mindset, intonation, gesture, language, behaviour or Actions in carrying out family communication to communicate can be successful.

Abstract

The plan to move the capital city of the Republic of Indonesia (RI) from DKI Jakarta Province to East Kalimantan Province sparks pros and cons. Various comments appeared on social media. This study aims to: (1) find out the issues carried in the #IKNNusantara hashtag network; (2) categorize comments into negative, positive, and neutral sentiment categories; (3) find the structure and relationships of the actors in the network. The research methodology is quantitative research approach, the SNA (Social Network Analysis) method using NodeXL software and Sentiment Analysis using the online application Brand24.com on the hashtag #IKNNusantara on Twitter. The results of sentiment analysis show that the conversation is dominated by neutral sentiment. The total number of tweets up to February 16, 2022, was 255. SNA results show that the network density between actors in #IKNNusantara is still low at 0.23 percent. The network diameter describes the network pattern spreads and the cohesiveness between actors is low. The most influential actors based on the value of centrality are the accounts @jokowi and @ir with the highest in-degree values, which shows that a lot of talks are directed to this account. Accounts @d_n4bil5 and @newiding30 who have the highest out-degree are the most active in disseminating information. The @jokowi and @d_n4bil5 accounts serve as bridges because they have the highest betweenness value. Accounts @doddyjasmar and @royadam_lubis have the highest closeness values. Furthermore, the @d_n4bil5 and @langonlegend accounts with the highest eigenvector values are the actors with the most links to other actors. With this result, the government needs to continue to monitor the issue continuously and build awareness among netizens and the Indonesian people in general about the importance of IKN development. The use of social media focusing on delivering messages through the 7 (seven) most influential accounts above can have a significant impact. In terms of issue management, the government also needs to consider the most appropriate strategies to respond to issues according to the type of issue and the government's position on the issue.

Abstract

The cultural differences between foreign teachers and local students in multicultural classrooms impact teaching methods, communication styles, student-teacher interactions, and teaching preferences, affecting the effectiveness of learning. Studies on culture and educational communication in these settings are limited. This study investigates the cultural adaptation strategies of foreign teachers in multicultural classroom environments at Springfield High School. Utilizing Young Yun Kim's cultural adaptation theory framework, this research explores how foreign teachers at Springfield High School, an Indonesian school with an international curriculum, adjust in a collective educational setting, through a qualitative approach involving interviews with three participants and direct observations, employing a descriptive case study method. The findings highlight that foreign teachers' cultural adaptations involve key factors such as empathy, openness, flexibility, and support from the school environment. The model of cultural adaptation identified in this research is acculturation. This study contributes to the field of cross-cultural educational communication by emphasizing that foreign teachers need to understand the cultural backgrounds of local students to foster positive and meaningful interactions that enhance learning. The implications of this research include guiding the development of intercultural training programs designed to support foreign teachers and improve educational outcomes in multicultural classrooms. It underscores the importance of cultural competence among teachers working in these diverse environments.
