Abstract

 The article aims at finding out students’ learner identity and difference through English Club Meeting at Megarezky Universitas. This research investigated twenty members of English Club Meeting of Megarezky University (E-Comers) who come regularly and five respondents for interview. The method of this research is used observation, field note, and interview. The data collecting were analyzed by presented, analyzed, discussed and interpreted. The result of this research categorized four factors in order to understand learner identity, motivation, learning strategies, learner autonomy, and cross linguistic influence. In motivation, students are motivated due to the value of group community, students’ personal goal, and senior members’ role. While in learning strategies; coping and communication strategies are appeared on this research. Talking about learner autonomy, it is revealed that students’ control is the most effective strategies. So, it can be concluded that cross-linguistic influences students in English learning process. In conclusion, these four factors help teachers to understand students’ identity and difference. Every student has different motivation, learning strategies, students’ autonomy and cross-linguistic influence factors which English Meeting Club tends to accommodate students’ identity in one group activity.

Abstract

The aims of this study are to assess students’ perception of listening materials used in the listening class of the English education program at the Megarezky University of Makassar.  Students' perception of the use of listening materials is beneficial in order to understand and improve listening material especially in the English education program at the Megarezky University of Makassar. This researcher was used a qualitative approach to collect data through questionnaires and interviews. The participants of this research were 10 students of the English education program in the 2020/2021 academic year. The technique of analysis covers students' perception related to the general perception of listening material that they received in the first and second semester in listening courses. The finding indicated students have positive opinions of the listening materials used in class. However, there were some positive feedbacks and some potential problems with the use of listening materials. All these perceptions of the listening materials can imply the improvement of better listening materials in the future.

Abstract

In learning English, most of the students think that English is a difficult skill. Given that, the writers want to improve the students’ speaking skills in English by using the Unscripted Role Play Teaching Activity. The data from classroom action research is collected by quantitative data (oral test) as main data and qualitative data (notes and documentation) as supporting data. The outcomes show that students have improved in English. It proves by ab average score that the students achieved in cycle 1 and cycle 2. In Cycle 1, the average score was 63.28 with 11 students (31.42%) achieved the standard minimum score whilst the average score in Cycle 2 is 78,28 with 30 students (80.71%) achieved the standard minimum score. In conclusion, the unscripted role-play teaching activity has improved the students’ speaking ability. Keywords:  Unscripted, Role Play, Language Competence

Abstract

kegiatan English camp merupakan salah satu gagasan yang inovatif untuk meningkatkan kepercayaan diri mahasiswa dalam berkomunikasi menggunakan bahasa Inggris. Pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan motivasi dan kepercayaan diri anggota atau pengurus UKM English Community of Megarezky (E-COMER) Universitas Megarezky Makassar dalam berbicara bahasa Inggris melalui kegiatan English Camp. Kegiatan outdoor yang dilakukan sebagai kegiatan latihan berbicara di luar kelas dikenal dengan kegiatan English camp. Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini berlangsung selama 3 hari 3 malam. Setelah itu mahasiswa telah mempelajari teori dasar dalam berkomunikasi menggunakan bahasa Inggris. Metode yang digunakan dalam pengabdian ini adalah mentransfer ilmu, praktik/latihan berbicara, memotivasi, dan memecahkan masalah. Temuan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini menunjukkan bahwa kegiatan English Camp dapat membantu mahasiswa dan pengurus UKM English Community of Megarezky dalam meningkatkan kepercayaan diri mereka dalam berbicara bahasa Inggris

Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out whether or not the use of Jeopardy Strategy can improve the students` vocabulary at the first semester of PIKIH Program of UIN Alauddin Makassar 2014/2015. This research employed quasi experimental method with two groups pre-test and post-test design. There were two variables; they were independent variable (the use of Jeopardy Strategy in teaching vocabulary) and dependent variable (the students` vocabulary). The population of this research was the students of PIKIH Program of UIN Alauddin Makassar 2014/2015 which consisted of 1670 students of 67 groups. The sample of the research consisted of two groups by using purposive sampling technique. The researcher took the forty-two group as experimental class and the thirty-nine group as control class. The instrument of this research was a written vocabulary test used in pre-test and post-test. The result of the data indicated that there was a significant difference between students’ post-test in experimental class and controlled class. The mean score of post-test (74.29) in experimental class was greater than the mean score of post-test (59.96) in controlled class. From t-test, the researcher found that the value of t-test (4.44) was greater than t-table (2.00) at the level of significance 0.05 with degree of freedom (df) = 46. Based on the finding and discussion of the research, the researcher drew a conclusion that the use of Jeopardy Strategy can improve the students` vocabulary at the first semester of PIKIH Program of UIN Alauddin Makassar 2014/2015.

Abstract

This research aimed to increase students’ vocabulary mastery by using mind mapping. The researcher gave material about vocabulary by using mind mapping via WhatsApp group (online learning). The subject of this research was class VII C which consists of 25 students at SMP Tut Wuri Handayani Makassar, the academic year 2020/2021. The researcher used the classroom action research method in two cycles; each cycle consists of planning, action, observation, and reflection. The instrument used interview, field note, vocabulary test, and documentation. The result of this research showed the increase of the student's vocabulary mastery by using the mind mapping technique from cycle 1 to cycle 2. It can be seen from the average test calculating in cycle I was 70.48 (11 students or 44% got completeness) and cycle II was 80.6 (18 students or 72% got completeness). This indicates that by using mind mapping, students’ vocabulary mastery can be increase significantly.

Abstract

Contextual teaching and learning is one of the outstanding approaches that can help students understand the meaning of teaching materials based on personal, social, and cultural contexts. Due to this, students can have the knowledge and skills to actively build their understanding of the materials. Therefore, this study aims to find out the effectiveness of contextual teaching and learning in improving students' reading comprehension at SMP Negeri 2 Mappakasunggu Takalar. This study involved 56 students of seventh-grade students. This study used a quasi-experimental with two classes, the experimental class, and the control class. Data was collected through a reading test that was given to students before and after giving the Contextual Teaching and Learning method. In analyzing the data, the researchers used the SPSS version 22. The results of data analysis showed that the post-test mean value was 26.04 compared to without using CTL or conventional in the control class, the post-test mean value was 23.71. In addition, the calculation results of the SPSS version 22 application showed that the value of the t-count calculation was 2.3. Compared with table df = 54, namely (2.0) the significance level was 5%, t count > t table, then Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected. In other words, accept the alternative hypothesis (Ha) and reject the null hypothesis (Ho) to test both variables. From the results of hypothesis testing, it was proven that There was a significant effect between the use of contextual learning.

Abstract

This study aims to explore students' learning strategies and their views on the strategies they used to understand reading texts. This study used a qualitative research design by conducting in-depth interviews with two participants who met the criteria set by the researcher. The data collected from the interview were analyzed using qualitative data analysis stages, which are data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The results of this study indicated that the reading comprehension strategies used by students are scamming skimming, previewing, and making an inference. Students perceived that the learning strategy they used was very helpful for them in their daily learning process. In addition, those strategies made it easier for them to do the reading assignments and examinations

Abstract

This study aims at indentifying as well as to investigating the linguistic and non-linguistic errors students made in speaking performance . This research used qualitative research with the results analyzed obtained through interviews and documentation. The prospective subjects of this study was the eleventh graders, with a total of 152 students. The subjects of research were selected by purposive sampling technique in 11 MIPA 3 consisting of 36 students. The results showed that the remaining errors in speaking were caused by linguistic errors: 97 errors in 34 students in vocabulary, 50 errors in 21 students in grammar, and 41 errors in 18 students in pronunciation. In contrast, the non-linguistic errors of 4 students were fear of making mistakes when speaking and lack of confidence. In addition, students made mistakes when speaking in the aspect of fluency:  filled pauses: 96 errors from 28 students, silent pauses had 22 errors from 15 students and 24 errors from 14 students in repetition, and at the level of understanding, there were 10 errors from 7 students.

Abstract

Abstrak: Penulisan artikel ilmiah masih menjadi hambatan bagi para mahasiswa untuk menyelesaikan studi akhir mereka. Umumnya mereka kesulitan untuk menulis dan mempublikasikan naskah mereka karena mereka belum terlatih atau bahkan mereka tidak perna mempublikasikan tulisan mereka ke journal online. Oleh karena itu, mahasiswa perlu diberikan pelatihan untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan, pemahaman, dan kompetensi mereka melalui pendampingan penulisan artikel ilmiah. Tujuan dari kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini adalah untuk memberikan pengetahuan, pemahaman, dan peningkatan kompetensi mahasiswa khususnya mahasiswa yang terhimpun dalam organisasi IPMIL Luwu Raya. Mitra pada kegiatan pengabdian ini adalah organisasi IPMIL Luwu Raya dan Enlish Community of Megarezky Kota Makassar Provinsi Sulawesi Selatan, yang terdiri dari 35 peserta. Adapun bentuk kegiatan pengabdian ini terdiri dari (1) Persiapan; (2) Pelaksanaan; dan (3) Evaluasi. Untuk mengukur ketercapaian tujuan kegiatan pengabdian dilakukan instrument soal pretest dan posttest. Berdasarkan hasil yang diperoleh bahwa terjadi peningkatan nilai rerata pretest yang awalnya 38 menjadi 83. Seluruh peserta (100%) memperoleh peningkatan skor nilai pretest-posttest. Tim kegiatan pengabdian menyimpulkan bahwa kegiatan pelatihan dan pendampingan penulisan artikel ilmiah dengan pemanfaatan aplikasi Publish or Perish dapat meningkatkan kemampuan dan pemahaman mahasiswa dalam menulis artikel ilmiah.Abstract: Writing scientific articles is still an obstacle for students to complete their final studies. Generally, they find it difficult to write and publish their manuscripts because they have not been trained or even they do not want to publish their writings to online journals. Therefore, students need to be given training to improve their knowledge, understanding, and competence through assistance in writing scientific articles. The purpose of this community service activity is to provide knowledge, understanding, and improvement of student competencies, especially students gathered in the IPMIL Luwu Raya organization. Partners in this service activity were the IPMIL Luwu Raya organization and the Enlish Community of Megarezky Makassar City, South Sulawesi Province, which consisted of 35 participants. The form of this service activity consisted of (1) Preparation; (2) Implementation; and (3) Evaluation. To measure the achievement of the objectives of service activities, instruments were carried out about pretest and posttest. Based on the results obtained, there was an increase in the average pretest value which was originally 38 to 83. All participants (100%) obtained an increase in pretest-posttest scores. The service activity team concluded that training activities and assistance in writing scientific articles with the use of the Publish or Perish application can improve students' ability and understanding in writing scientific articles.
