Abstract

This article is based on a research aiming to study the street vendors’ social movement in the city of Bandar Lampung, particularly in Bambu Kuning market, by using the Marxist conflict perspective. The Bandar Lampung municipal policy to sweep the street vendors has caused them to resist. This research is qualitative, using observation technique, participative observation, in-depth interviews, and library research for data collecting. There are five important discoveries in the research; 1) street vendors movement, in Marxist conflict perspective, is a resistant act both openly and closely or latent. 2) Sweeps by Bandar Lampung municipality, which is based on public agreement on certain values such as bylaws Perda No 8 Tahun 2000 which aims at the street vendors, is a form of hegemony. 3) Movement by the street vendors, both openly and latently, which is perceived as a resistance in this research, is a counter hegemony. 4) Hegemony, resistance, negotiation, and compromise are indispensable things in a conflict between the ruling class and the subject class. 5) In Bambu Kuning market, there are people who control the street vendors as well as subordinated by the Bandar Lampung municipality. They are the market thugs usually called preman. Their position in the Bambu Kuning case is in “grey area” or not clear; representing none of both the street vendors and the municipality. Key words: social movement, street vendors, hegemony, resistance

Abstract

Background The COVID-19 pandemic has led to school closures and virtual learning implementation. The situation has affected children's lifestyles and created an obesogenic environment. Objective To evaluate the impact of virtual learning during the pandemic on body weight changes in children. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted on 6-12 years age children who experienced virtual school learning in Jakarta, Indonesia. Parents or guardians were asked to complete an online questionnaire about lifestyle changes and children's anthropometric data both before and during the virtual learning period. Changes in the weight-for-age Z-score (WAZ) and BMI Z-score (BMIZ) were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Results A total of 206 children were assessed. There was a significant relation between virtual learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic and WAZ and BMIZ changes among children aged 6-12 years. Approximately 64% of the children experienced WAZ decrement (P value = 0.000), and 77.1% experienced BMIZ decrement (P value = 0.000). Conclusion This study do not align with existing studies' indicating that the pandemic lead to weight gain in children. Instead, the results shows that virtual learning period causes both WAZ and BMIZ to decrease.

Abstract

Objective: Cervical cancer is associated with an increased risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE), which may be further aggravated by chemotherapy. This study aimed to assess the impact of chemotherapy on VTE incidence in patients with cervical cancer. Methods: A systematic review was conducted according to PRISMA 2020 guidelines. PubMed, the Cochrane Library, and EMBASE were searched from inception to October 2024 for observational studies reporting VTE incidence in cervical cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. Studies including women with cervical cancer treated with chemotherapy and reporting VTE outcomes were eligible, while studies evaluating radiotherapy or surgery alone were excluded. Results: Three observational studies involving 2,292 patients met the inclusion criteria. Pooled analysis showed that chemotherapy significantly increased VTE risk (RR 2.83; 95% CI: 2.05–3.90; p < 0.001), with low statistical heterogeneity. The reported incidence of chemotherapy-associated VTE ranged from 10.0% to 18.7%. Conclusion: Chemotherapy is associated with a nearly threefold increased risk of VTE in cervical cancer patients. These findings support routine VTE risk stratification prior to chemotherapy and consideration of individualized thromboprophylaxis. Further prospective studies are needed to define optimal prevention strategies.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Background: Ovarian cancer, ranking third among gynecologic cancers, poses a significant global health challenge. Despite affecting over 239,000 annually and causing 150,000 deaths, the overall survival rate is 45.6%. Variability in survival rates across different stages necessitates a detailed understanding of contributing factors. This systematic review and meta-analysis explores recent research to illuminate crucial aspects influencing epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) patient outcomes. Methods: A protocol registered in PROSPERO (ID: CRD42024502616) guided this systematic review, focusing on cohort studies examining prognostic factors for EOC mortality. Eligibility criteria included relevance to mortality risk, clear extraction methods, and English language. A PRISMA-guided search with the keywords “((Ovarian Cancer) AND (Mortality) AND (Risk)” across Scopus, PubMed, and Cochrane. Evaluation of 66,191 samples from 16 cohort studies identified several key prognostic factors for mortality in epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). Results: Advanced FIGO stage (III-IV) and high-grade serous histology were significant predictors of higher mortality, with stage III-IV showing a risk ratio of 3.62 (95% CI 3.35–3.91). Older age, greater inflammation (higher BMI, smoking), and bilateral tumors also increased mortality risk. Additionally, lifestyle factors like reduced physical activity and rural living, as well as treatment-related factors such as perioperative red blood cell transfusion, were associated with poorer survival outcomes. This systematic review provides comprehensive insights into the complex landscape of EOC survival. Key prognostic factors for mortality in EOC patients include advanced cancer stage, high-grade serous histology, older age, inflammation, and bilateral tumors. Treatment factors such as perioperative transfusion and neoadjuvant chemotherapy intensity also play a critical role. Conclusion: These findings highlight the need for personalized treatment strategies based on these factors to improve survival outcomes for EOC patients.
