Abstract

With the drastic increase in competition in the future, the readiness of human resources is an essential factor that should not be ignored. One way to prepare qualified human resources is through education. However, for some students, the cost of education in Indonesia is still too expensive, so not a few students are unable to continue their education to higher education. A team of lecturers from Pamulang University, in collaboration with Myskat Empat Ribu (MER) organized a fundraising webinar. This webinar aims not only to raise funds to be distributed to orphaned students who are threatened with dropping out of university but also to provide information to scholarship hunters. This webinar results in scholarship hunters knowing other programs to study abroad besides scholarships. Apparently, not many students/ lecturers do not know the research/teaching assistanceship program.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine (1) the difficulties students faced in Section 2 of the TOEFL Prediction Test and (2) the reason why they consider those topics were difficult. A mixed method design was used in this study. A total of 30 students from different majors at Pamulang University were the test sample to determine difficulties faced by the students. Semi-structured interviews with the five low-performing participants who recorded the most errors on the test to explore the reasons. Results indicated reduced clause (20%) was the most difficult questions to students, followed by subject-verb agreement (13%), parallel structures (13%), comparisons (13%), pronouns (9%), and coordinating conjunctions (9%). It was also found Part B to be more difficult than Part A because it was harder to spot the mistakes in a sentence than it was to complete the sentence from multiple choices. Additionally, the results also revealed that reasons affecting the difficulties in answering the topics namely lack of knowledge and preparation, time management, and lack of vocabularies. Therefore, TOEFL teachers and trainers are strongly encouraged to pay more attention to the six topic study exercises with the highest error percentage, and to train students with various exercises in order to get used to the actual test.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to identify the application of English in mathematics teaching in Southeast Asia countries, focusing on trends across countries, methods, benefits, and challenges. This study employed a systematic literature review (SLR) method adapted from the PRISMA model, resulting in 17 relevant articles obtained from 141 articles in the Scopus and Web of Science databases.  The data analysis technique of this research applied thematic analysis to review, identify, and analyze the data.  The findings revealed that emerging research focused on learning policies and media, improving pedagogical practices, educational quality, and student learning outcomes. Malaysia is the country that has conducted the most research on this topic, with 11 articles, followed by the Philippines and Thailand, each with 2 articles. The majority of studies used qualitative methods and mixed methods. The benefits of using English in mathematics instruction included avoiding translation errors, supporting the implementation of global learning, enhancing soft skills and problem-solving abilities, supporting future career prospects, and improving the quality of learning with support from teachers and related parties. Some challenges faced include varying skills and readiness of teachers and students, the availability and utilization of resources, and the different impacts on students, especially those from diverse demographics. Additionally, cultural and linguistic gaps between English and students’ mother tongue, the rapid adoption of English policies in mathematics teaching, and necessary pedagogical adjustments also present challenges.
