Abstract

Some reports have uncovered that the number of religious intolerance and violation cases still appear in Indonesia recently. Preventive actions must be taken to keep Indonesia aligned with its national motto “unity in diversity”. This paper discusses the importance of promoting religious moderation toward society to build peace and harmony. Furthermore, this paper addresses the urgency of inserting religious moderation values to school instructions, particularly in English language teaching. Some practical ways of embedding the religious moderation values into English instructions are also presented so that English teachers can apply them in their classes. Finally, it is expected that religious tolerance and respect for diversity can be built among students.

Abstract

Teaching ESP requires a thorough and systematic way in developing the materials because the purpose is to help students develop their English competence in specific disciplines. What was found in the teaching of English for Tourism in the Religious and Cultural Tour Guide Program in Tampung Penyang State Hindu Institute (IAHN) of Palangka Raya was the absence of proper materials for the students. This study is a small part of Research and Development (RnD) project for an English for Tourism book of this faculty. It involved the stakeholder and the practitioner in the local tourism industry as the informants in giving insights to local-based material development. Employing a qualitative approach, the in-depth interviews were conducted. The results of this study finally offer some recommendation for English for Tourism materials: 1) speaking and writing as the top priorities of required English skills, 2) language functions included: self-introduction, negotiating, handling tourists at an airport, making an itinerary, writing and replaying an email, and describing tourist destination or place, 3) vocabulary related to tourism industry and especially tour guiding, 4) cross-cultural understanding, and 5) local tourist destinations.

Abstract

Kemampuan speaking dan vocabulary merupakan fondasi penting dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris pada tingkat sekolah dasar. Namun, siswa sekolah dasar masih menghadapi berbagai kendala seperti keterbatasan kosakata, rendahnya kepercayaan diri dalam berbicara, serta metode pembelajaran yang masih berorientasi pada hafalan. Kegiatan   ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan speaking dan vocabulary siswa kelas 3 di SDN 4 Menteng melalui penerapan deep learning approach. Kegiatan dilaksanakan dalam dua tahapan, yaitu observasi awal dan pelaksanaan pelatihan interaktif. Metode yang digunakan meliputi vocabulary building, speaking practice, storytelling, role play, language games, dan penggunaan multimedia sederhana. Peserta kegiatan berjumlah 61 siswa kelas 3. Data dalam kegiatan ini dikumpulkan melalui beberapa teknik yaitu observasi, wawancara, dokumentasi, serta pretest dan posttest. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan bahwa siswa mengalami peningkatan penguasaan kosakata, keberanian berbicara, serta motivasi belajar bahasa Inggris. Mayoritas siswa kelas 3 diketahui mampu mengenali dan menggunakan 15–20 kosakata baru dalam percakapan sederhana. Selain itu, lebih dari 80% siswa aktif berpartisipasi dalam praktik speaking selama kegiatan berlangsung. Pendekatan deep learning terbukti mampu membuat pembelajaran menjadi lebih bermakna, interaktif, dan menyenangkan bagi siswa sekolah dasar.
