Abstract

Abstract

Social media is a space for people to share and convey information, just seconds, the images and videos shared on social media become the public attention. Netizens – commonly called – are always looking for trends in society – social media – today. One of them is a video of teenagers on the outskirts of Jakarta who are said "controlling the Dukuh Atas SCBD area" as a space for them to be creative in society. Citayam fashion week, which became the term for the actions of teenagers in the area, triggered netizens to participate in bringing this trend to life. How is this explained? Interaction as social behavior in the form of responses such as likes and comments must be interpreted more deeply as a process of interaction that influences each other. The social media ethnography method used to see how the interactions that occur affect and encourage netizens to be creative in this trend. This paper will discuss the “link to action” where one trend that is currently happening then becomes a stimulant for the same action in other areas mediated by social media. This spontaneous trend is present as an effort by a creative group in the public sphere, but in reality, this trend is an attempt to “show oneself” – in trend – to get a self-representation on social media. Keywords: Social Media, Intersubjectivity, Representation, Telecopresence

Abstract

The political year is approaching; every five years, Indonesia faces a contestation of democracy and political games. Cybertroops act as a volunteer force in influencing public opinion on certain topics, creating polarization that attracts the attention of the government in defending against opinions that damage and endanger Indonesia’s integration. How is it viewed? This research uses social media ethnography to observe the landscape of cybertroops and virtual police in their respective domains. Critical Discourse Analysis is used to see how cybertroops to work in cultivating public opinion, while virtual police monitor and minimize the growth of public opinion polarization.

Abstract

This paper discusses multispecies anthropology, which refers to an approach involving various forms of life, recognizing that humans are not the only significant subjects in ecosystems. It is an anthropological approach that expands the focus of study to include the relationships between humans and other species, including animals, plants, microorganisms, and non-human entities. The paper explores the relationship between humans and Sumatran tigers at the Kinantan Wildlife and Cultural Park in Bukittinggi. The Sumatran tiger is critically endangered due to habitat loss, ecosystem degradation, and most importantly, the high-intensity human-tiger conflict. This has created conditions where tigers are relocated to enclosures or zoos. Tigers in zoos are often explored for economic or research purposes, creating a new agency for tigers as both "objects and subjects" in the narrative of conservation. Additionally, it creates a complex and mutually influencing relationship between humans and tigers. To preserve the Sumatran tiger as a "wild" species in zoos, certain practices resembling domestication have been implemented by keepers, leading to new ways of interacting with and perceiving this species. Using a qualitative descriptive method and a performative approach through the animal focal sampling method to observe the daily behavior of Sumatran tigers, this study illustrates how different "tigers" are "created" through interaction practices and how a performance of wildlife coexists with domestication practices within the tiger enclosure. The paper examines specific breeding practices and how feeding, breeding, and captivity entangle human and animal lives. The researcher has also explored various ways of care enacted by keepers, ranging from close, embodied interactions. By focusing on the interrelated practices within the zoo, the paper aims to use empirical descriptions to argue about the relationships within the processes of becoming and the formation of a world—a world that is not static but made through the practices of both human and non-human agents.

Abstract

The conflict between humans and elephants in Indonesia continues to escalate due to land expansion and forest encroachment, forcing elephants to enter settlements and agricultural areas. This phenomenon has gained widespread attention, particularly through news coverage and social media. This study examines how social media, particularly Instagram, shapes public perceptions of elephants, specifically in Tesso Nilo National Park. Using a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach and virtual ethnography, this research explores the representation of elephants as "celebrities" shaped by Mahouts (elephant handlers) through their social media posts. The findings reveal that Instagram plays a role in creating two types of perceptions: physical reality and imagery. Physical reality perceives elephants as animals that need to be cared for, fed, monitored, and trained, while the imagery constructed through social media portrays elephants as individuals with unique personalities, attracting public attention and sympathy. Some elephants, such as Domang, Tari, and Harmoni, have gained "celebrity" status due to their interactions with Mahouts, which are shared on social media, fostering emotional connections between Instagram followers and these elephants. However, this phenomenon also raises ethical discussions regarding the treatment of elephants, such as the use of chains and Mahout communication tools. This study highlights that social media can be an effective tool for conservation by raising public awareness but also opens up debates and criticisms regarding the ethics of wildlife treatment.
