Abstract

The conflict between humans and elephants in Indonesia continues to escalate due to land expansion and forest encroachment, forcing elephants to enter settlements and agricultural areas. This phenomenon has gained widespread attention, particularly through news coverage and social media. This study examines how social media, particularly Instagram, shapes public perceptions of elephants, specifically in Tesso Nilo National Park. Using a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach and virtual ethnography, this research explores the representation of elephants as "celebrities" shaped by Mahouts (elephant handlers) through their social media posts. The findings reveal that Instagram plays a role in creating two types of perceptions: physical reality and imagery. Physical reality perceives elephants as animals that need to be cared for, fed, monitored, and trained, while the imagery constructed through social media portrays elephants as individuals with unique personalities, attracting public attention and sympathy. Some elephants, such as Domang, Tari, and Harmoni, have gained "celebrity" status due to their interactions with Mahouts, which are shared on social media, fostering emotional connections between Instagram followers and these elephants. However, this phenomenon also raises ethical discussions regarding the treatment of elephants, such as the use of chains and Mahout communication tools. This study highlights that social media can be an effective tool for conservation by raising public awareness but also opens up debates and criticisms regarding the ethics of wildlife treatment.

Abstract

Abstract

This study discusses the adaptation strategies employed by students of the Faculty of Performing Arts at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Padang Panjang, West Sumatra Province, in response to the campus parking policy. The aim of this research is to explore how students adapt to the parking regulations and to examine both the positive and negative impacts experienced directly by the interviewees on campus. This study uses a qualitative approach with data collection techniques including observation, interviews, and documentation. The results indicate that students have developed various adaptation strategies, such as adjusting their arrival schedules and using alternative routes to campus, including walking. These strategies reflect the students’ efforts to cope with the limitations of parking facilities on campus.

Abstract

The food security of the Koto Gadang VI Koto community in Agam Regency, West Sumatra, is frequently threatened by crop failures caused by pests such as rats and planthoppers. This study aims to describe how the ratik tolak bala tradition functions as a cultural strategy for maintaining local food security. Employing a qualitative descriptive-analytical approach, the research collected data through participant observation, in-depth interviews with traditional and religious leaders, farmers, and field documentation. Data analysis used the interactive model of Miles and Huberman (reduction, display, conclusion drawing) and was interpreted through C.A. Van Peursen’s framework of tradition (mystical, ontological, and functional stages). The findings reveal that ratik tolak bala originated as a communal response to pest attacks threatening rice crops—the main food source. The ritual consists of two stages: ratik duduak (collective chanting in the mosque) and ratik tagak (processional chanting around the village), accompanied by the application of paureh, a herbal mixture of local plants, and field sanitation activities. Led by a mursyid (religious teacher), the ritual effectively reduced pest infestations, restored harvest yields, and ensured stable household rice stocks. Theoretically, the practice reflects a transition from mystical belief to functional rationality consistent with FAO’s four food security pillars: availability, access, utilization, and stability.

Abstract

Human–wildlife conflict in Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park (BBSNP), particularly in Pekon Pemerihan, has intensified due to deforestation, land-use change, and expanding agriculture, threatening endangered species such as the Sumatran elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus). This study formulates the problem of how local communities classify and mitigate conflicts with elephants through ethnoecological knowledge, and how such knowledge can be integrated with a multispecies perspective for sustainable coexistence. Using qualitative methods, data were collected through field observations, in-depth interviews with farmers and mahouts, and participatory mapping. The findings reveal a three-level classification system: (1) domains distinguishing wild and managed elephants and safe versus risk-prone spaces; (2) taxonomies of conflict types (economic, social, spiritual) and elephant identities; and (3) components involving technical, social, temporal, and ritual strategies. Results show that conflicts are understood not only ecologically but also cosmologically, with elephants seen as moral agents shaping human life. The study concludes that effective mitigation must integrate technical interventions with local ecological knowledge, cultural values, and community solidarity to achieve more adaptive and just conservation strategies.
