Abstract

Javanese people still observe the Punggahan ritual before the month of Ramadan, particularly those who live in Sekoci Village, Besitang District, Langkat Regency, Northern Sumatra Province. The purpose of this study is to ascertain the origins of this practice, how it has evolved, and what the Punggahan tradition means to the Javanese residing in Sekoci Village, Besitang District. A qualitative research methodology is employed in this study. Qualitative data was gathered via library research and interviews. The Javanese community in Sekoci village, Besitang District, is undergoing changes in the way their Punggahan ritual is being carried out. When a group gathers in a mosque or prayer room, the menu is different. This results from the integration of Javanese and Malay culture. This integration resulted in the creation of a specific cuisine that is required at every Punggahan ritual celebration in Sekoci Village, Besitang District. Meat is typically offered on the menu. The tradition of embracing Ramadan in Sekoci Village, Besitang District, originated from this blending of Javanese and Malay customs. The research explores how local communities negotiate the cultural identities that have been transported with them from their home environments to new ones, whereupon they come together to create a new cultural construction. This study serves as a case study of cultural integration and evolution. It demonstrates the importance of adapting traditional practices to contemporary contexts while maintaining their essential cultural significance.

Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to analyze the influence of the shaving ritual on the formation of the religious identity of the Malay community by referring to the text of the Hikayat Nabi Bercukur as the primary source. The shaving tradition in the Malay world not only functions as a social practice, but also contains spiritual values that strengthen the relationship between Islamic teachings and local customs. Using a quantitative-qualitative approach, this study tested several independent variables, namely exposure to the Hikayat Nabi Bercukur, the intensity of participation in the shaving ritual, and family norms and local traditions, against the dependent variable of the community's religious identity. The results show that the level of exposure to the Hikayat Nabi Bercukur and the intensity of involvement in the shaving ritual have a significant influence on the strengthening of individual and community religious identity. Meanwhile, family norms and cultural traditions play a role as reinforcing factors in maintaining the continuity of the practice amidst modernization and social change. These findings confirm that the shaving tradition is not merely a cultural heritage, but also a syncretic representation of Islamic values and the ethno-religious identity of the Malay community in the Indonesian archipelago. Key Words: The Story of the Prophet Shaving; Shaving tradition; Malay society; Religious identity; Cultural syncretism.

Abstract

Chinese Islamic Unity Organization (PITI) is a social missionary organization that houses ethnic Chinese Muslims in the city of Medan which was founded in 1961. In its organizational development it experienced obstacles such as during the New Order era when it had to change the name of its organization. And in 1998, PITI Medan could be said to have "a name but no form", in the sense that the PITI Medan organization existed but in all its activities experienced stagnation. However, running an organization does not mean it does not meet obstacles. Currently, PITI Medan is experiencing a decline in organizational activity due to a lack of awareness among the management and members to advance the organization. Due to work and long distances as well as lack of funds, this has also become an obstacle to the development of the PITI Medan organization. Apart from that, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, there have been no activities carried out by the PITI Medan organization until now. The PITI organization has a role as a forum for fostering religion and uniting Chinese Muslims with native Muslims, and native Muslims with ethnic Chinese which is one of the developments of Chinese Muslims in the city of Medan which is realized through activity programs, such as recitations, Muslimat taklim majlis, activities at the month of Ramadan, as well as activities to commemorate Islamic holidays. Abstract

The tradition of waking the community for sahur is a cultural practice in Ramadan that continues to be observed across many regions of Indonesia, taking diverse local forms such as ronda sahur in Java, sahur bagarak in South Kalimantan, arakan sahur in Jambi, and keliling sahur in Langkat. This study examines how the sahur wake-up tradition has changed in form, function, and meaning under conditions of modernization. It uses a qualitative literature-based method in which data drawn from journal articles, academic books, and other relevant publications were analyzed through an interpretive cultural approach to trace the relationship between religious practice, local culture, and social change. The findings show that the tradition originally served as a communal means of signaling the time of sahur using kentongan, bedug, rebana, and other traditional instruments. As this practical function has been displaced by modern technology, the tradition has not disappeared but has been reconstituted as a more symbolic cultural practice, expressed through sahur festivals, Ramadan cultural processions, community art performances, and digital documentation on social media. This transformation indicates that the tradition now functions less as a practical reminder than as a vehicle for cultural identity and social solidarity among Muslim communities. The article contributes to the study of intangible cultural heritage by showing that the sahur wake-up tradition is not merely preserved but actively reconstructed through a heritage-making process, in which community participation, youth transmission, Ramadan soundscapes, festivalization, spatial negotiation, and digital documentation jointly convert a practical religious custom into a dynamic form of Ramadan cultural heritage. The study concludes that this tradition constitutes a form of intangible cultural heritage capable of adapting to social and technological change without losing the values of togetherness, religiosity, and cultural identity that sustain it.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out more about the Labuhanbatu Regency Library and Archives Service's approach to static archive preservation, as well as the challenges faced and the steps taken to overcome them. To ensure the security and protection of archives, static archive preservation is carried out. This type of research uses qualitative descriptive techniques. This research uses the Miles & Huberman data analysis approach, which specifically focuses on data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. Through observation, interviews, and documentation, researchers collect information for data analysis. Two people participated in this research as informants. Using a purposive sampling approach, these informants were selected from among those who met the requirements of the research subjects, namely, archivists who had knowledge of archival preservation. The research findings show that although the static archive preservation of the Labuhanbatu Regency Library and Archives Service is good, it still does not meet the expectations of the theory that guides the research. Archives activists are of the opinion that despite their best efforts, archives are still not optimally maintained due to various obstacles, including inadequate funding, inadequate facilities and infrastructure, and human resources who do not understand archives. Efforts made by archivists include providing special archival training on archival science, building inadequate facilities and infrastructure with allocated funds, and prioritizing the use of the budget for crucial tasks to achieve archive maintenance in good condition.
