Abstract

Objectives: To report the “sunray” appearance on panoramic radiography as a sign of malignancy lesions of the mandible. Case Report: A 40 year old female patient came to the Hasanuddin University Dental Hospital with the main complaint of facial swelling which causes an asymmetrical appearance and hard consistency on palpation. Mucosa around the second right premolar to the third right molar is reddish with an irregular border. The patient was referred to the radiology department for panoramic radiography and MRI. The panoramic radiograph revealed a mixed radiolucent-radiopaque lesion in tooth 35 involving ramus to the coronoid process. PDL space was irregular widening at 36, 37, and 38. The "sunray” appearance was seen from the ramus extending to the coronoid process. On the MRI, a mass on the submandibular gland pushed and narrowed the sublingual, parapharyngeal, and masticator space, destroying the mandible on the left side. These radiologic findings strongly suggest a malignancy involving the jawbone. Conclusion: The findings of a mandibular malignancy in the form of a “sunray” appearance on panoramic radiography need to be confirmed with an MRI examination to determine the consistency and extent of the lesion to the surrounding tissue. A comprehensive examination is necessary to properly diagnose mandibular malignant lesions so that the most suitable treatment plan can be determined.

Abstract

Objectives: This report aims to describe the clinical and radiological characteristics of ameloblastoma. This benign odontogenic tumor rarely occurs in the upper jaw, and to emphasize the importance of using panoramic radiography in confirming the diagnosis. Case Report: A 52-year-old female patient presented with a lump in the right upper jaw that had been present for three months. She reported that a small lump first appeared four years earlier and had gradually increased in size. The patient had a history of surgery to remove a lump and extraction of a right maxillary tooth in 2021, with histopathological analysis (HPA) revealing ameloblastoma. She also reported tenderness in the area and the presence of a salty discharge from the mouth. Panoramic radiography and CT scan revealed a unilocular, homogeneous radiolucent lesion, ovoid with well-defined margins, located in the edentulous posterior right alveolar ridge. The lesion extended superiorly toward the base of the right maxillary sinus and inferiorly toward the crest of the alveolar ridge. The patient underwent an excisional biopsy, with a histopathological examination confirming the diagnosis of a bone tumor (ameloblastoma). This was followed by a segmental maxillectomy in the region of teeth 12–15 under general anesthesia. Ameloblastoma has a high tendency to recur, particularly when conservative management fails to completely remove the tumor. In this case, pathological examination, along with panoramic and CT imaging, confirmed recurrent ameloblastoma. Conclusion: The diagnosis of recurrent follicular ameloblastoma of the maxilla was established through a combination of clinical evaluation, radiographic imaging, and histopathological examination.

Abstract

Panoramic radiographs are used to diagnose oral diseases, monitor dentofacial development, and evaluate treatment proce-dures. This article discusses panoramic radiographs in paediatric patients under 6 years of age according to age, gender, di-sease diagnosis at RSGMP Universitas Hasanuddin. In this descriptive observational study, cross-sectional data collection was used on all paediatric patients who underwent panoramic radiography from January to December 2023. The reasons for taking panoramic radiographs were categorised as early childhood caries, oral pathologies, dentoalveolar fractures, developmental ano-malies, and others. A total of 202 panoramic radiographs were taken from paediatric patients aged 2-6 years; 82 children aged 5 years were the most common. Girls accounted for 107 of the patients. The most common case diagnosis was early childhood caries with 167 children. It was concluded that the use of panoramic radiographs in paediatric patients is not intended as a gene-ral screening. It should be limited to children under 6 years of age unless absolutely necessary.

Abstract

Objectives: To analyze cases of maxillary canine impaction, emphasizing characteristics, positional forms, and radiographic features. Materials and Methods: This descriptive study utilized a retrospective and cross-sectional design approach. Samples were obtained through purposive sampling. Secondary data from the Dental Hospital and Education Clinic (RSGMP) at Hasanuddin University from January to December 2023 were used. A total of 43 clinically and radiographically diagnosed cases were included in this study. Results: This study revealed that patients with maxillary canine impaction were predominantly in the age group of 10–19 years (46.5%), with females comprising 62.8% and males comprising 37.2%, resulting in a male-to-female ratio of 1:1.68. Type II maxillary canine impaction (Yamamoto classification) was the most common case, accounting for 53%. Conclusion: Radiography was a crucial aid for diagnosing various types of oral lesions, especially those involving bones. Abstract

Objectives: This case report aims to describe the radiographic appearance of sialolithiasis on occlusal and panoramic radiographs. Case Report: A 27-year-old female patient came to RSGMP UNHAS with complaints of a lump under her right tongue. Before the lump appeared, the patient complained of pain under his right tongue. The swelling began approximately one week ago, initially about the size of a green bean. It has progressively increased in size until the present time. On occlusal radiography imaging, an irregular round radiopaque focus was found, and on panoramic radiography of the right mandibula zone, a well-defined radiopaque image in the form of an elongated oval/cylindrical shape was found. Case management: After clinical examination and panoramic and occlusal radiographs, a sialolithectomy was performed under general anesthesia in the right sublingual area. Conclusion: This case report is to describe radiographically the appearance of sialolithiasis on panoramic radiographs and occlusal radiographs, which is clearly visible in this case. Abstract

Objectives: This literature review aims to analyze the morphological variations of the mandibular condyle as observed in panoramic radiographic images. It investigates recent findings on the correlation between condylar morphology and clinical factors, highlights the clinical relevance of these variations in diagnosis and treatment planning, and underscores the importance of early identification of structural abnormalities in dental practice. Review: A comprehensive literature search was conducted using databases including PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar. Keywords used were: mandibular condyle, morphological variation, panoramic radiograph, and TMJ. Inclusion criteria comprised peer-reviewed studies published in English from 2015 to 2023 focusing on human panoramic radiographic evaluations of condylar morphology. Exclusion criteria included studies using only CBCT without panoramic comparisons, case reports, and studies on animal subjects. The review synthesized retrospective, cross-sectional, and observational studies with sample sizes ranging from children to older adults to identify common condylar morphologies and their clinical implications. Conclusion: Panoramic radiographs can effectively identify morphological variations of the mandibular condyle, such as round, flat, angled, convex, and rare bifid shapes. These variations are associated with factors like age, gender, dentition status, and occlusion. Understanding these differences is crucial for early diagnosis and proper management of temporomandibular disorders.
