Abstract

This research is to find the development of integrated agricultural systems implemented in several countries and in Indonesia and the constraints that occur in the implementation of integrated farming systems (IFS). IFS is a solution to a crisis situation where agriculture or livestock can no longer support all the economic, ecological, ecosystem, social, and technological aspects. This integrated farming system combines agriculture with livestock, fisheries, forestry, and tourism. Plants with livestock are interconnected and mutually beneficial and mutually supportive. This incorporation involves utilizing all existing resources in its entirety, to produce by-products in the form of waste utilization from agriculture and livestock (zero waste) and supported by technological developments to support it. The method uses integrated farming systems by looking for similarities, differences, views, and summarizes the results of previous research. This research covers literature studies on the development, implementation, and constraints that occur in integrated farming systems in several countries in the world, and Indonesia with various models of integrated farming systems are applied. Based on a literature study found that integrated farming systems can improve food security, farmer welfare, increase soil fertility, increase employment, create renewable technology, and the importance of government support to create opportunities for farmers in increasing their agricultural scale and more prosperous farmers in the future. In addition, there are also obstacles in IFS such as the absence of a correct understanding (farmers and facilitators), yield and productivity levels have not convinced farmers, the model is not in accordance with the ecosystem, has not utilized local potential, the existence of integrators have not been considered, yet the existence of comprehensive studies and agricultural development policies are not pro-farmers and lack of supporting technology.

Abstract

The main issue in Indonesia’s beef sector over the past three decades is the inability of domestic production to meet national consumption needs, resulting in dependence on beef imports. Domestic price fluctuations, consumption growth outpacing production, and rising per capita income have also influenced the supply and demand dynamics of beef, affecting price stability and the welfare of local farmers. This study analyzes the dynamics of Indonesia’s beef imports and the factors influencing them during the 1993–2022 period using annual time series data. A quantitative approach with the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) method was employed to examine the effects of production, consumption, domestic price, foreign price, exchange rate, and per capita income on beef import volume. The results show that production, consumption, domestic price, and per capita income significantly affect the volume of beef imports, while foreign price and exchange rate do not have a significant impact. This study recommends policies that support sustainable increases in domestic production and control of domestic prices to ensure affordability for consumers without harming local farmers. The findings can serve as a basis for the government to formulate strategies for animal food security by strengthening supply chains, improving distribution efficiency, and enhancing the productivity of smallholder farmers to maintain the stability of Indonesia’s beef market.

Abstract

This study investigates the distribution and development of goat farms in Limapuluh Kota District with two main objectives: (a) to map the spatial distribution and development areas of goat farms, and (b) to enhance the capacity of the goat population within the district. Spatial analysis was conducted using ArcGIS 10.9, Location Quotient, and Shift Share Analysis to identify key areas for goat farm distribution and development. The capacity of livestock populations was evaluated through the CIRP method using Microsoft Excel, based on potential land resources. Secondary data from 2017 to 2021 on goat farm production was sourced from the Livestock and Animal Health Service Office and BPS Limapuluh Kota. Results indicated that goat farms are primarily concentrated in the Harau, Suliki, and Bukit Barisan Districts, while the Mungka, Payakumbuh, Guguak, Lareh Sago Halaban, and Kapur Sembilan Districts are identified as development areas. The Situjuh Limo Nagari, Luak, Akabiluru, and Pangkalan Koto Baru Districts are classified as consolidation areas, and the Gunuang Omeh District serves as a supporting area. The analysis highlights that 13 districts have potential for boosting the goat population, whereas Situjuh Limo Nagari and Guguak are categorized in the low group due to their goat population being below the threshold of 200 LU.

Abstract

This activity is conducted with cattle farmers in Nagari Sariak Laweh, Akabiluru District, Fifty Kota Regency. Based on the preliminary survey in Nagari Sariak Laweh, most cattle farmers engage in farming as a side business, alongside growing food crops. Until now, knowledge about efficient and productive livestock management among the group members remains low. Rice straw has not been utilized as feed, and farmers struggle to obtain fresh forage and afford the relatively expensive concentrate feed. Farmers also face challenges acquiring fertilizers due to the high cost of synthetic fertilizers. Therefore, the goal of this activity is to enhance the skills and knowledge of cattle farmers in the Akabiluru district regarding beef cattle management, aiming to increase the productivity of the raised beef cattle. The method of delivering the material is carried out to equip participants with good beef cattle management practices, the utilization of straw, and the use of cattle manure. The results of this activity include cattle farmers gaining an understanding and proficiency in beef cattle management. Additionally, farmers are trained to produce fermented feed and organic fertilizer. As evidence of success, participants, with the guidance of the resource persons, successfully produced 55 kg of fermented straw, 55 kg of silage, and 17 kg of organic fertilizer made from cattle manure.
