Abstract

Animal welfare-based training on livestock handling techniques during sacrificial animal slaughtering is a crucial effort to reduce stress levels and bruising in cattle carcasses post-slaughter. This training, conducted at Al-Ma'ruf Mosque in Samarinda Ulu District, Samarinda City, involved 40 sacrificial animal handlers (stockmen) from various local mosques and prayer rooms. Participants were trained using the Rope Squeeze and Burley methods to enhance technical skills in livestock handling, particularly in reducing the risk of animal injury and work-related accidents. Abstract

Pig farming is crucial in local economies and food security, providing a vital protein source and economic opportunities. In Samarinda City, East Kalimantan, the sector demonstrates significant potential due to abundant natural resources and rising market demand, contributing 15% of the province’s pork production in 2024. This study examines strategies for developing pig farming businesses in Samarinda City using a mixed-methods approach, integrating descriptive and analytical methods. Data were collected through surveys and interviews with 50 respondents, including farmers, traders, and policymakers, complemented by secondary data from government agencies. Analytical tools such as SWOT, Location Quotient (LQ), and multiple regression were employed. The findings reveal that Samarinda Utara and Palaran have the highest specialization in pig farming, with LQ values of 1.8 and 1.7, supported by ample land and feed resources. Key drivers of farmer income include production scale and policy support, while high feed costs, comprising up to 70% of production expenses, remain a significant challenge. Recommendations include diversifying pork-based products, adopting modern technologies, strengthening policies, and improving distribution infrastructure. This research provides actionable insights to enhance the sustainability and competitiveness of pig farming, contributing to regional economic development and agricultural resilience.

Abstract

The goal of this community service project is to improve the Payolansek community's understanding and proficiency in preparing wholesome meals using local ingredients, particularly through the socializing process of creating egg rendang. Since the primary ingredient, eggs, are a cheap and nutrient-dense source of animal protein and the spices employed have a number of health advantages, egg rendang was selected as the activity's focal point. Interactive lectures, demonstrations, and practical egg rendang-making were among the techniques employed. Before and after the activity, questionnaires were used for evaluation. The findings demonstrated that participants' knowledge and proficiency in processing nutrient-dense foods had significantly increased. Additionally, participants were able to make the best use of locally available food components and had a greater understanding of the significance of a balanced diet. It is anticipated that this project will help the Payolansek community's nutritional situation and serve as a template for comparable community service projects in other locations. The success of this activity is aided by the backing of the local village authority.

Abstract

Karang Tunggal Village, located in Kutai Kartanegara Regency, has excellent potential in the livestock sector, especially in producing livestock products such as meat and milk. However, managing livestock products and waste still faces various obstacles, including a lack of awareness among farmers regarding efficient and sustainable management practices. This research aims to analyze the application of a participatory approach in education on managing livestock products and waste by directly involving the livestock community. This approach allows farmers to actively participate in every process stage, from problem identification to implementing solutions based on local needs. The data in this research was obtained through in-depth interviews, field observations, and focus group discussions (FGD) involving local breeders and related stakeholders. The research results show increased quality of livestock products, especially regarding cleanliness, food safety, and selling value. Apart from that, there has been a waste reduction that was previously simply thrown away, with innovations in using waste as organic fertilizer and additional feed for livestock. The adoption of more sustainable livestock practices is also starting to be implemented by livestock farmers, improving their economic welfare. Furthermore, this program opens up opportunities for developing value-added processed products, such as pasteurized milk and processed meat, which can increase farmers’ income. Collaboration between farmers in managing joint businesses is also growing, creating a more solid livestock ecosystem. Apart from the economic impact, this participatory approach also increases farmers’ awareness of the importance of sustainability and better environmental management, which contributes to the sustainability of the livestock sector in Karang Tunggal Village.

Abstract

This activity aims to strengthen the local economy in West Payakumbuh, Payakumbuh City, West Sumatra, by implementing community service related to stingless bee beekeeping socialization. In addition to promoting environmental conservation, this program seeks to raise community awareness of stingless bee beekeeping's potential as a sustainable alternative source of income. Technical instruction in stingless bee beekeeping, processing bee products including honey and propolis, and marketing these goods are used to carry out socialization activities. The findings demonstrated the community's strong passion and ability to successfully implement stingless bee beekeeping techniques, particularly among farmers and breeders. Products from stingless bee bees also have a lot of commercial potential and can lower reliance on the traditional economic sector while also enhancing community welfare. Micro-enterprises based on bee products can also be developed thanks to this training, which should hasten the sustained economic empowerment of communities. In general, this service was successful in promoting the establishment of an eco-friendly company and contributing to the rise in the income of Payakumbuh City residents.
