Abstract

This study examines the linguistic and psychological dynamics of hate speech in Indonesian political discourse on YouTube by analyzing user comments on a CNN Indonesia talk show discussing Gibran Rakabuming Raka. Using a qualitative approach grounded in appraisal-based discourse analysis, the study analyzes 1,534 comments to explore how evaluative language constructs moral conflict in online political communication. The findings reveal that hate speech is predominantly expressed through negative judgment, which accounts for 45% of the data, followed by contractive engagement strategies that restrict dialogue (44%) and intensified graduation that amplifies emotional force (12%). These linguistic patterns indicate that political disagreement is frequently framed as moral condemnation rather than rational debate. The study further demonstrates that such evaluative strategies are closely linked to psychological processes, including moral conviction, group identity signaling, and emotional contagion, which collectively intensify polarization in digital spaces. By integrating linguistic analysis with psychological perspectives, this research highlights hate speech as a form of moralized discourse that escalates affective conflict. The study concludes by recommending digital literacy interventions that extend beyond content moderation to address underlying evaluative and emotional processes, with the aim of fostering empathy, critical reflection, and more constructive online political engagement.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the construction of ecological discourse in the reporting of the collapse of the Al-Khoziny Islamic Boarding School in Sidoarjo as covered by Detik.com. The study employs a Critical Eco-Discourse Analysis approach, combining Stibbe’s ecolinguistic framework and Fairclough’s critical discourse model, to examine how events, actors, and ecological ideologies are represented in online news texts. Data were collected from Detik.com articles reporting the chronology, causes, and impacts of the building collapse. The findings indicate that the media primarily framed the incident as a technical tragedy while largely overlooking ecological and regulatory factors such as dense spatial planning, soil conditions, and limited building standards. The role of supervisory institutions and eco-boarding school mitigation practices was rarely mentioned. These results highlight the need to strengthen ecological discourse in pesantren reporting by involving diverse sources and emphasizing environmental, governance, and student safety aspects. This study concludes that Detik.com’s coverage tends to marginalize ecological dimensions and institutional responsibility, thereby limiting public understanding of the structural and environmental factors underlying the incident. The study contributes theoretically to the ecolinguistics of pesantren and practically to the development of safer and more sustainable pesantren management policies.

Abstract

This study discusses the altruistic behavior of the character Kiai Moko in “Legenda Api Tak Kunjung Padam” (The Legend of the Never-Ending Fire) set in the Pamekasan Regency using a qualitative descriptive method. The purpose of this study is to describe the altruism of the character Kiai Moko based on Einsberg dan Mussen' theory of altruism. Data collection techniques used literature review, reading, and note-taking. Meanwhile, the data analysis techniques used included data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. Based on the study, it was found that the character Kiai Moko represented altruistic behavior in the storyline. This behavior was manifested through three aspects, namely paying attention, helping others, and putting others first. These findings show that Kiai Moko, as one of the legendary figures in Pamekasan, represents an altruistic character that reflects a personality worthy of emulation and should be passed down from generation to generation as a means of character education. In addition, this reflection can also be used as a characteristic of the identity of the people of Pamekasan.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the meaning of semiotic signs in the novel Laut Bercerita by Leila S. Chudori using Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic theory. This research uses descriptive qualitative method, with the main data in the form of quotations in the novel analyzed as signs in the form of icons, indexes, and symbols. The results of the analysis show that the novel contains various forms of icons such as the sound of waves, the aroma of cooking, and visual images that resemble the original object. Meanwhile, indexes are found through signs that indicate presence or effect, such as the smell of cigarettes and the sound of knocking on the door. Symbols appear in the form of objects or events that have conventional or cultural meanings, such as prisons and fight songs. All these signs reflect the social, political and humanitarian meanings that the author wants to convey. With Peirce's semiotic approach, readers can better understand the hidden messages in this novel in depth.
