Abstract

ABSTRACT This article is part of a report on the results of artistic research (works of music) in the field of music. Briefly expresses experience and some knowledge findings related to the process of creating musical works of art. "Durma" is an editorial for this artwork, which contains three works of music with a popular music creation approach. Inspired by the anxiety of observing the infertility of creativity in the area of popular music in Indonesia, through "Durma" the thought was made to model the creativity of popular music by paying attention to the clash of lyric texts with musical expressions to produce messages and impressions of songs that are not public. In the habits of popular music, the elements of lyric text and musical expression are linear and mutually reinforcing relationships. It has never been imagined before that when a popular musical creation thinks a little freely and tries to clash ideas with an established knowledge of popular music creation, it will instead create ambiguity and the complexity of a refreshing taste. The outputs of the "Durma" artistic research include (1) art work products in the form of audio recordings of three songs entitled (a) Candles, (b) Girls, and (c) Good Night, (2) research reports, and (3) scientific publications articles that unravel the knowledge behind this work process. Keywords : Music creation, popular, clash of musical expressions and lyric texts ABSTRAK Artikel ini adalah bagian dari laporan hasil penelitian artistik (karya musik) di bidang musik.

Kidungan midodareni night is still preserved because people still consider it important and has social values. This article's writing is motivated by the younger generation's lack of interest in the midodareni night song tradition. The function of Kidungan Malam Midodareni is correlated in two parts, namely the function for the bride and groom and the function for the community; there are four elements of the position, namely: (1) as a means of communication, (2) as a means of community integrity, (3) as a means of entertainment, and (4) as a means of validating social institutions.

Abstract

The research entitled "Adaptation of the Drum Chops Technique in the Song You Are Good in the Liturgical Serving of GBI Keluarga Allah Surakarta" was proposed by raising the assumption that this phenomenon occurs consciously and is related to many things in religious and cultural life in GBI Keluarga Allah Surakarta. There are two problem formulations, namely; 1) Why was gospel music adapted with drum chops technique in liturgical music at GBI Keluarga Allah Surakarta? 2) How was gospel music adapted and drum chops technique adapted to liturgical music at GBI Keluarga Allah Surakarta? and 3) How is the position of gospel music with drum chops technique in worship at GBI Keluarga Allah? The theory of cross-cultural adaptation is used as the basis for the analysis of this research by applying qualitative methods of field research techniques. The results of this study indicate that the GBI Keluarga Allah consciously accepts the gospel flow and uses Contemporary Christian Music (CCM) as the dominant music style because the concept of using liturgical music in GBI Keluarga Allah is a reference to the popular gospel music genre. The adaptation process that occurs in applying the linear drum chops technique is at least three things, namely simplification, mixing, and complicating the game references that are absorbed by the drummer through social media. The adjustment of the drum chops game is considered sufficient to affect the achievement of the desired atmosphere as in the part of the worship service.

Abstract

This research aims to examine the role of music in the construction process of the traditional Karo house, Siwaluh Jabu, in Lingga Cultural Village, Karo Regency, North Sumatra. In Karo culture, music is not merely a source of entertainment but serves as a symbolic and spiritual medium that reflects cultural values, social cohesion, and the community’s belief system. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method with an ethnographic approach through field observation, in-depth interviews with traditional figures, musicians, and local residents, as well as documentation of rituals and architectural elements of the Siwaluh Jabu house. The findings reveal that music plays a significant role in each stage of construction, starting from the selection of suitable wood to the completion ritual known as Mengket. The Gendang Lima Sendalanen ensemble—particularly through the performance of Gendang Limapuluh Kurang Dua—functions as a medium connecting humans with ancestral spirits, legitimizing the spiritual presence within the house, and strengthening communal cooperation. Music serves not only to regulate the rhythm of collective work but also to ensure harmony between humans, nature, and the unseen forces that are believed to inhabit the house. Therefore, music is an essential element that maintains cultural continuity, reinforces identity, and supports the preservation of the Karo intangible heritage amidst ongoing modernization.

Abstract

Musical modality, professionalism, and work quality in everyday musical practice constitute the main analytical framework of this study. This research departs from the view that musical professions are often reduced to hobby-based activities, whereas in practice they involve work strategies, professional attitudes, and negotiation between artistic idealism and market demands. This study employs a qualitative approach through in-depth interviews with two musicians in the city of Solo, Aditya Ong and Indra Permana, who represent different backgrounds, professional roles, and musical orientations. The findings indicate that modality comprising experience, musical skills, and professional networks forms the foundation of musicians’ professionalism. Professionalism is reflected not only in technical competence, but also in work ethics, responsibility, and the ability to position oneself within various musical work contexts. Work quality is not understood normatively as good or bad, but as the outcome of how musicians manage their modality and professionalism in specific working situations. This study concludes that musical practice in Solo is shaped through continuous negotiation between artistic orientation, market demands, and the pursuit of livelihood stability. Musical modality, professionalism, and work quality are interconnected in forming musicians’ strategies to sustain their musical practices amid the dynamics of the local music industry.

Abstract

This article explores the contributions of Tamar Jaya as an art activist committed to advocating for the preservation of traditional music in Enrekang, a region characterized by its remoteness and lack of external support. This study applies a qualitative methodology, utilizing a character study framework based on Abdul Mustakim. It incorporates a historical lens and individual life narratives to explore his life journey, intellectual contributions, original concepts, and the socio-historical backdrop that influenced his activism. The findings indicate that Tamar Jaya's decisions are shaped by an intellectual wisdom acquired after higher education, which fosters a critical viewpoint on the stagnation within the arts ecosystem in South Sulawesi. This perspective particularly highlights the deficiencies in life skills among artists and the fluctuating political commitment from the local government. His activism unfolded in two strategic phases: an initial decade-long grassroots initiative (Gerakan Akar Rumput) aimed at revitalizing communal traditions, followed by a shift towards embodying a cultural survivor through the adoption of a hybrid Artist-Farmer model, characterized by a nuanced approach to political engagement. This study can be used to describe the Tamar Jaya activism movement as a model of cultural-political management, which aims to maintain and disseminate the existence of marginalized arts and culture by optimizing management skills, networks, and funding literacy.
