Abstract

Abstract: The research aimed to determine parameters affecting household income diversity of farmer’s tribes in South Sumatra tidal wetland, especially studied from the aspect of land acreage, education level, age of farmers and tribes of farmers. The research was using survey method and carried out from June-August 2016 in the Delta Telang I Banyuasin, South Sumatra. The data were recorded by questionnaire for 145 respondents of farmers. Data was processed, described and correlated to see the relevance of the parameters with other parameters. The research concluded that the character of household economy of farmers explaining the relation between production decisions to increase rice production is land acreage, education, age, experience of farmers, number of household members, and labor allocation. Multi commodities farming (rice and plantation) was very favorable compared to monoculture rice fields? But this is a little bit contradictive with government policy that the research area is pointed out as the center of rice production. Therefore, government policy needs to motivate farmers that they can manage their farming from upstream to downstream and they work full in their own farming. Metode penelitian adalah survey lapangan yang dilakukan pada bulan Juni-Agustus 2016 di Delta Telang I Banyuasin. Data direkam dengan kuesioner untuk 145 responden. Data diproses, dijelaskan dan dibuat korelasi untuk melihat hubungan parameter satu dengan parameter lainnya. Hasil penelitian menyimpulkan bahwa ekonomi rumah tangga petani menentukan keputusan untuk berproduksi. Produksi padi ditentukan oleh luas lahan, pendidikan, usia, pengalaman petani, jumlah anggota rumah tangga, dan alokasi tenaga kerja.  Pertanian multicropping (padi dan perkebunan) sangat menguntungkan dibandingkan dengan monokultur padi, akan tetapi hal ini sedikit bertentangan dengan kebijakan pemerintah bahwa daerah penelitian telah ditetapkan sebagai sentra produksi padi. Oleh karena itu, perlu kebijakan pemerintah untuk memotivasi petani untuk tetap monokultur padi, tetapi petani harus mengelola pertaniannya mulai dari hulu sampai ke hilir. Kebijakan pemerintah ini harus bersifat spesifik dan disesuaikan dengan suku-suku petani.Kata kunci: Rumah tangga, pendapatan, keanekaragaman, suku, pasang surut

Abstract

Naturally peatlands ecosystem belongs to a stable ecosystem and tends to increase its peat thickness, but if the balance of its natural conditions is disturbed, then peatlands are easily degraded and lost altogether. The research aimed to analyze the socio-economic determinant factors causing why peatlands in South Sumatra are rapidly degraded, thus it is threatening the existence of the human life support system. The research method was using an explorative and descriptive method by making the web portal of "Google search engine". Keywords were used for searching ‘peatland’, ‘degradation’ and/or ‘socio-economic causes’ in title and abstract. To analyze priority level of socio-economic aspects in contributing to peatlands degradation, thus an AHP analysis was conducted and interview with selected respondents. The research resulted that socio-economic determinant factors causing peatlands degradation are complex and integrated each other.  Based on clustering the main sequence of causing peatlands degradation was performed by increasing population; increasing poverty; win-win approach; security of land ownership; and agricultural infrastructure and expansion respectively. Understanding this cluster with a comprehensive approach is needed to decide what factors play in the degradation of peatland, so that the policies made are precise and targeted. At this time the government requires to restore peatlands, so that peatlands can be preserved forever.

Abstract

he research aimed to analyze livelihoods, household income and indigenous technology in South Sumatra wetlands. The research method used field survey and interviews with respondents by using questionnaires. Respondents were determined with stratified random sampling method. The research data are classified into two parts, i.e. primary data and secondary data. The research showed that three main farmer’s groups settling in wetlands are spontaneous migration (Buginese and Banjarnese), new comers (transmigration) and indigenous people (local people from South Sumatra). All these tribes running the different farming systems, new comers and indigenous farmers implement farms with rice monoculture, while spontaneous migration applied multi commodities. The average land ownership of farm households is 1.95 ha which is intended for rice fields (0.94 ha), estate (0.85 ha), and livestock and fisheries (0.16 ha). Indigenous farmers have the minimum land (0.75 ha), however the spontaneous migration has the largest lands (3.10 ha). The larger the land ownership by farmers, thus the farmer’s income will increase if the land is cultivated by farmers. Household income structure of farmers is dominated by food crop farming and this has led to the vulnerability of farmer’s income due to the uncertainty of agricultural activities. The more varied sources of farmer’s income, the income of farmers will increase also. The learning process of spontaneous migration indicates that the farm should follow the nature, so the coercion of nature means to increase operational costs of farming.Keywords: Livelihoods, household, income, indigenous technology, wetlands

Abstract

The research aimed to analyze selected properties of peat degradation on different land uses and the sustainable management. The research area is located in the lowland dome peats in the catchment basin of Sibumbung River and Sibotak River in Sub District of East Pedamaran, OKI South Sumatra. The research method used an experimental design of Randomized Completely Block Design with two Blocks and five treatments (Site A: intercropping between oil palm and pineapples; Site B: oil palm plantations, Site C: peat forest; Site D: swamp bush; Site E: swamp grass). The research resulted that drainage and land uses decrease some properties of peats, namely C/N ratio, total pore space, fiber and ash content as well as organic C on cultivated peats and are significantly different at level of 5% compared with uncultivated peats. Bulk density increased due to peat compaction and groundwater table on cultivated peats, which is getting deeper, and significantly different compared with uncultivated peats. All soil series do not show any change because of drainage and different land uses. Sustainable peat management can be implemented through three approaches, namely managements of water, soil and crops.

Abstract

The research aimed to gain reasons of farmers to convert their rice fields, and to formulate rice fields conversion control to oil palm plantations in tidal wetlands of South Sumatra. The research was carried out in a drainage and irrigation area of Pulau Rimau, Banyuasin District South Sumatra. Collected data consists of primary and secondary data. Primary data are taken from farmers who have already converted their rice fields into oil palm plantations. Secondary data were collected from the village, the District Agriculture Office and Statistic Agency. Data was collected through the Focus Group Discussion (FGD). Data analysis was performed using Analysis Hierarchy Process (AHP) to determine the factors that influence the decision of farmers to convert their land to oil palm plantation. The research resulted that if rice yields was estimated an average 3.00 tons Milled Dry Grain (MDG)/ha, then in 2006 with the existing land could produce rice as much as 127,719 tons MDG/year, but in 2013 the productivity of agricultural land decreased to 60,138 tons MDG/year. If the predicted needs of rice in year 2006 were 50,000 tons MDG/year and increased by 75,000 tons MDG/year in 2013, then if the land use is not immediately controlled, that Pulau Rimau will deficit rice. Factors contributing to land conversion are divided into three factors, namely technical aspects, economical aspects and environment aspects. The control concept can be divided in macro concept and micro concept. The macro concept generally be only done by the government or a strong industry who pays a lot of attention to the local community. The micro concept programs can be done either by the government, private or local communities.

Abstract

Technological innovation in agriculture is essential not only to enhance productivity and ensure food availability but also to preserve the environment. Several basic principles of sustainable agricultural development include community-based initiatives, environmental conservation, involvement of agribusiness actors, focus on the development of small-scale farming, and reliance on local resources. The utilization of tidal swamp land in Banyuasin Regency covers an area of 163,758 hectares, consisting of 16 tidal swamp irrigation regions under the authority of the central government. Through the implementation of the SERASI program from 2019 to 2021, it has been proven to reduce poverty rates in Banyuasin Regency. The objective of this research is to formulate the policy direction for the development of tidal swamp agriculture that supports economic development in Banyuasin Regency. The research aims to formulate the policy direction for the development of tidal swamp agriculture that supports economic development in Banyuasin Regency. The research findings indicate the following: enhancing the practice of agricultural intensification in tidal swamp land through increased farmer knowledge and expanding funding opportunities for the application of agricultural technology; expanding the adoption of sustainable farming practices through technology implementation, particularly in soil processing, water management, fertilizer selection, pest and disease control, harvesting, and post-harvest handling, which can prevent and minimize the risk of land degradation; preserving the sustainability of tidal swamp agricultural land through effective irrigation system management by activating irrigation management institutions, especially at the farmer level, and implementing soil management practices to maintain soil fertility; improving the welfare of farmers through demographic and social improvements, such as increasing farmer education, promoting a greater number of creative and innovative young farmers, strengthening farmer groups/institutions, fostering partnerships, and involving all members of farmer families.
