Abstract

This study was aimed to examine effects of terminal bud and auxiliary shoot removals on growth and yield of chili pepper. The experiment was arranged in a randomized complete block design (RGD) with 3 replications. Factors studied were trimming of terminal bud and trimming of auxiliary shoots.   Results showed that removal of terminal bud had no effect on plant growth, represented by stem diameter (P = 0.6517) and yields, represented by the number of fruits (P = 0.9806) and length of fruit (P = 1128). Similarly, removal of auxiliary shoots also had no effect on stem diameter (P = 0.7302), number of fruits (P = 0.4210), and length of fruit (P = 0.9878).

Abstract

The objective of this study was to test three types of plant spacing on two varieties of rice on growth, yield components, and yield of rice. This experiment used a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 3 replications.  Factors studied were types of plant spacing and varieties. The results showed that the types of plant spacing significantly affected rice yield. However, the types of plant spacing did not significantly affect age of flowering, panicle length, and number of grains per panicle. On the rice yield variable, Legowo and triangle (hexagonal) types of plant spacing gave higher yields than rectangular type. Variety significantly affected age of flowering, panicle length, number of grains per panicle, and yield of rice. Pandan Wangi bloomed faster than Cot Irie line. However, Cot Irie line had longer panicles and more grain numbers, and higher yields than Pandan Wangi. There was a significant interaction between varieties and types of plant spacing on a number of productive tillers. On Pandan Wangi, the most productive tillers were found in a rectangular type of spacing, but not significantly different to a triangular type of spacing. The least number of productive tillers was found in a type of Legowo. However, on Cot Irie line, the number of productive tillers did not differ from each other among the types of plant spacing.

Abstract

This study was aimed at determining effects of soil surface treatments and organic matter types, as well as interactions between the two treatments on growth of cayenne pepper. The results showed that there were significant interactions between soil surface treatments and organic material types on plant growth of cayenne pepper at age of 5 weeks after planting.  Surface treatments affected plant growth However, the soil surface treatments were influenced by types of organic matters given in the soil.  On organic matter in the form of compost, the best growth was found on recycled newspaper mulch placed on soil surface. Conversely, on organic matter in the form of pieces of recycled newspaper, mulch of recycled newspapers gave the worst growth.  Organic matters also affected plant growth. However, treatment of organic matter was also influenced by soil surface treatments. On the surface soil compaction treatment, the best growth was obtained at compost. On treatment of newspaper mulch, the best growth was also obtained at the type of compost. In contrast, on the untreated soil surface, the best growth was found at the type of organic matter made of the pieces of recycled newspaper.

Abstract

Effect of IAA and BAP on Growth of Patchouli (Pogestemon cablin Benth) In Vitro Muhammad Hatta, Mardhiah Hayati dan Ulfa Irayani Fakultas Pertanian Unsyiah Darussalam Banda Aceh  ABSTRACT The research was aimed at understanding response of patchouli growth in vitro to concentration of IAA and BAP, and looking at interaction between both treatments.  The experiment was arranged in a factorial randomized complete block design (RCBD)  2 x 6 with 5 replicates.  Factors investigated were concentration of  IAA (0 dan 1 mgl-1) and concentration of BAP (0.0, 0.4, 0.8, 1.6, 3.2 dan 6.4 mgl-1). Variables observed were shoot numbers, shoot height, and leaf numbers at 8 weeks after culturing. The results showed that there was interaction between IAA and BAP on leaf numbers of plantlet at 8 weeks after culturing, where the presence of IAA in the medium caused BAP to exert negative effect on lef formation. On shoot numbers and shoot height, the concentration of IAA and BAP did not exert any effect.

Effect of Ground Nut Varieties and Sweat Corn Planting Time  through Intercropping System on Growth and Yield of the Two Plants Lukman Nulhakim dan Muhammad Hatta Fakultas Pertanian Unsyiah Darussalam Banda Aceh ABSTRACT             The aim of this research was to know the effect of sweat corn planting time and ground nuts varieties, and interaction between them, on both growth and yield in intercropping system. This research was conducted at Cot Cut village, Kota Baro regency, Aceh Besar sub district, from June to October 2007. Treatments were arranged by Factorial Completely Randomized Block Design 3 x 4 with 3 replicates. Sweat corn planting time consisted of 0, 15, 30 and 45 days after ground nut planting, and ground nuts varieties consisted of Putih, Merah and Gajah. Each plot were 3,5 m x 3,5 m in size, the planting spacing for sweat corn was 100 cm x 75 cm, and for ground nut was 25 cm x 25 cm. Manure was 12,25 kg/plot, applicated 1 week before ground nut planting. Urea for ground nuts was 0,12 kg/plot, applicated at ground nuts planting. Urea for sweat corn was 0,37 kg/plot, applicated 1 week after each planting times. TSP and KCl were given at ground nut planting. The results showed that 0 day after ground nut planting was the best for sweat corn growth, but 15 days after ground nut planting was the best for sweat corn yield. Variety of Putih was the best for both plants growth and yield. There was interaction between both treatments on ear of sweat corn diameters.  The best combination was  Putih variety planted at the same time with sweat corn

Abstract

High dependence of rice farming on chemical fertilizers has an adverse impact on environment and the economy. Thus, it is necessary to develop varieties that are tolerant to low nutrient conditions. This experiment was arranged in a randomized block design with a total sample of 88 plants. The results showed that grain weight per panicle was the variable that has the highest diversity, followed by the number of leaf chlorosis per productive tillers and number of panicles. Plant height was a variable that has the lowest diversity. Moreover, the number of panicles showed significant positive skewness, which indicates that the number of panicles have complementary gene interaction. Plant height, number of leaf chlorosis per productive tiller, and number of panicles had positive kurtosis values, which indicate that these variables are controlled by a few genes. In contrast, grain weight per panicle, number of tillers, and the number of leaves had negative kurtosis values, which indicate that these variables are controlled by many genes. F4 bulk population gave 32 clusters, which indicate that this F4 population has a high variation among individuals.

Abstract

The objective of study was to determine response of three varieties of rice to timing of providing organic fertilizer on SRI system. The results showed that the timing of providing organic materials exerted a significant effect on grain weight per hill and production per hectare, but no significant effect on variables of other rice growth and production. Provision of organic matter at planting date and a week after planting date gave  better grain weight per hill and production per hectare than a week before planting date. These results were consistent for all the tested rice varieties, i.e. Ciherang, Pandan Wangi, and Angke.  However, to some extent, Pandan Wangi was the best.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to examine hexagonal plant spacing on growth and yield of three varieties of rice. In addition, this study was also aimed to examine interactions between the hexagonal plant spacing and the varieties on growth and yield of rice plants.  The experiment applied a split plot design with four replications. Factors studied were (1) variety, placed as a main plot and (2) hexagonal plant spacing, placed as subplot. The results showed that effect of plant spacing on productive tiller number varied, depending on variety. In Pandan Wangi and Ciherang varieties, productive tiller numbers did not differ between plant spacing of 21 cm from a spacing of 25 cm. In contrast, in line Cot Irie, productive tiller of 25 cm plant spacing outnumbered that of plant spacing of 21 cm. Effect of plant spacing on panicle length was consistent on all varieties tested. Rice panicle length did not differ between plant spacing of 21 cm and 25 cm. Effect of plant spacing on potential yield per hectare was also consistent across all varieties tested. Plant spacing of 21 cm provided a potential yield per ha which was not significantly different from plant spacing of 25 cm. Line Cot Irie provided panicle length better than varieties Pandan Wangi and Ciherang. Line Cot Irie also provided the highest yield potential per hectare, while panicle length and potential yield per ha of Ciherang were not significantly different from Pandan Wangi.
