Abstract

This study was aimed to determine the effect of different cutting age on the crude fiber content of ramie (Boehmeria nivea L. Gaud) as forage, and to know the optimum cutting age of ramie  for ruminant feed. The research was carried out in Margamulya Village, Cikandang District, Garut Regency, from August to October 2018. Crude fiber analysis was carried out at the Ruminant Animal Nutrition Laboratory and Animal Food Chemistry, Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Padjadjaran University. The study used a completely randomized design with four (4) treatments and five (5) replications,  i.e.  P1 = 15 days of cutting age, P2 = 30 days of cutting age, P3 = 45 days of cutting age, P4 = 60 days of cutting age. To find out the differences in effects between treatments, Duncan's multiple range test was carried out. The results showed that the cutting age affected the crude fiber content of ramie. The older cutting age had the increased crude fiber content. The optimum cutting frequency of ramie for forage was  30 days with ADF content 38%, NDF 53.2%, hemicellulose 34.1%, cellulose 14.8% and lignin 4.0%.

Abstract

Corn straw is an alternative substitute for forage for animal feed in the dry season, but corn straw has low quality and short shelf life. The provision of starters is carried out to preserve and improve the quality of corn straw silage. This study aims to determine the effect of using various levels of cassava flour and cassava tape juice as starters on the physical quality and pH of corn straw silage. This study was carried out with a Complete Random Design (RAL), consisting of 20 experimental units with 4 treatments and 5 replicates, namely P1: corn straw without cassava tape juice and cassava flour as control, P2: corn straw + 1.5% cassava tape juice and 1.5% cassava flour, P3: corn straw + 3% cassava tape juice and 3% cassava flour, P4: corn straw + 4.5% cassava tape juice and 4.5% cassava flour. The data were analyzed using Analysis of Varians (ANOVA) and continued with Duncan's Multiple Ranges Test (DMRT). The data from the study showed that the use of cassava flour and cassava tape juice had a real effect (p<0.05) on physical quality which included color, aroma, texture, smell, and the presence of mold as well as the pH of corn straw silage.  It can be concluded that the using corn straw with 1.5% cassava flour and 1.5% cassava tape juice produced the best silage quality and pH compared to other treatments in terms of good physical quality, the lowest pH achievement, and the absence of mold.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the response to selection based on variations in selection intensity for birth weight in Priangan sheep. The study was conducted at a local farm in Nenggeng Village, Darangdan Sub-District, Purwakarta Regency, using a case study approach. The data analyzed were derived from the recorded birth weights of 108 lambs, which were the progeny of 6 rams and 36 ewes. Data analysis used descriptive statistics and analysis of variance (ANOVA). The response to selection was calculated based on standard deviation, heritability, and selection intensity. The most optimal selection intensity was achieved with the use of 0.44% (1 male lamb) and 4.11% (10 female lambs). The results of the analysis indicated that the response to selection was 0.138 kg. If selection is applied to the current generation, the birth weight of the next generation is expected to increase from 2.17 kg to 2.308 kg.

Abstract

Ambon banana is a type of tree that has a soft stem. One of the by-products of banana trees is the stem. Banana pseudo-stems can be used as animal feed because they contain quite good nutrients and do not contain anti-nutrients. The purpose of the research was to determine the physical quality and pH of Ambon banana pseudo-stem silage given various types of starter. this research used an experimental method and completely randomized design, which used four treatments and five replications. The treatments were P1: 100% banana pseudo-stem + 10% cassava flour, P2: 100% banana pseudo-stem + 10% rice bran, P3: 100% banana pseudo-stem + 10% pollard, P4: 100% banana pseudo-stem + 10% molasses. The observation data wasthen tested by analysis of variance and Duncan further test. The variables observed consisted of physical quality carried out by 15 untrained panelists, and also pH. according to the research results, it can be concluded that different types of starters affected physical quality and pH. P3 treatment with the addition of 10% pollard gave the best results.
