Abstract

ABSTRACT Clinical study on the effect of hypertension herbs steeping formula on the renal functions has been done. Hypertension herb formula consists of Apium graveolens L.; Orthosiphon spicatus (Thunb.); Centella asiatica (L.); Curcuma xantoriza; Phyllantus niruri, and Curcuma domestica. Clinical trials were conducted by open-label clinical trial and pre-post test design. Thirty human subjects who have met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were involved in this study. The study protocol was approved by the research ethics of Ethics Committee for Health Research, National Institute of Health Research and Development, Ministry of Health. Before the treatment, the subjects who had signed informed consent performed anamnesis, medical history, clinical symptoms, physical examination and laboratory tests of renal function (BUN and creatinine levels). The subjects treat with the hypertension herbs steeping formula three times a day for eight weeks, then controlled it once a week. Anamnesis on the clinical symptoms, the possibility of side effects and physical examination diagnostic on the subject performed every week. Measurement on the renal function performed every four week. Base on the anamnesis and physical examination, the clinical study concluded that there were no significant adverse effects on the subject. Paired t-test results showed that there was no significant difference on subject’s BUN and creatinine levels before and after the treatment hypertension herbs steeping formula on the 28th and 56th day (p <0.05). Clinically, the treatment of hypertension herb steeping formula for 56 days did not affect the subject’s renal function. Key words: Hypertension herbs steeping formula, renal function

Abstract

ABSTRACT Salam leaf (Syzygium polyanthum), sambiloto (Andrographis paniculata), kayu manis (Cinnamomum burmani), and temulawak (Curcuma xanthoriza) is one of the jamu formulas are potentially developing as antihyperglycemic jamu in diabetes mellitus therapy. One of the important indicators of jamu formula safety is its toxicity on the liver function. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the safety of jamu formulas for hyperglycemic against liver function. This study is a clinical trial with a quasi-experimental design pre and post test design. The research conducted in jamu scientification clinic Hortus Medicus Tawangmangu on 45 healthy volunteers. The jamu formula is decoction of salam leaf (5 g), sambiloto (5 g), kayu manis (7 g), and temulawak (10 g). Jamu drinks three times a day. Forty-five healthy volunteers divided into three groups (each group consists of 15 healthy volunteers). Healthy volunteers (in group 1, II, and III) consuming jamu for 5, 10, and 15 days. Levels of SGOT and SGPT research subject reviewed before and after treatment. The difference in levels of SGOT and SGPT before and after treatment analyzed statistically with the paired t-test. The results showed there is no significance difference obtained at levels of SGOT and SGOT of healthy volunteers before and after jamu treatment on day 5, 10 and 15 (p > 0.05). This research concluded the antihyperglycemic jamu formula consisting of salam leaves (5 g), sambiloto (5 g), kayu manis (7 g), and temulawak (10 g) does not cause any signs of toxicity in the liver function. Key words: Clinical trial, hyperglycemia jamu formula, liver function

Abstract

Quality of Life (QoL) in diabetes mellitus (DM) has become highly emphasized in recent years as health care outcome. Hyperglicemic herbs potio, one of scientific herbs, has been proven to be safe and efficacious. The use of extract capsules as an innovative form of herbal medicine continues to be developed. The study aimed to examine the effect of giving hyperglicemic herbal extract capsules on the QoL of hyperglycemic patients at Rumah Riset Jamu (RRJ) Hortus Medicus. The method used was pre and post-test design with quasi-experimental. A total of 60 patients followed the study during September-November 2019. The hyperglycemic herbs formula consisting of 5 grams daun Salam, 5 grams sambiloto, 7 grams kayu manis and 10 grams temulawak which converted to the one extract capsule. For the daily doses are two capsules twice a day. The Metformin 500 mg single dose as a control of the study. Before this study and on day 28th, the patients had been examined the QoL using the short form-36 (SF-36). The data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon and Mann Whitney test. The results showed that there was a significant increase in total score of SF-36 (p=0,000) between before and after taking extract capsules, especially for the general health domain (p=0,002). The total score of SF-36 between extract capsules and Metformin groups was not significantly difference (p=0,323). Hyperglycemic herbal extract capsules improved the QoL of the hyperglycemic patients.
