Abstract

This research focused on the issue of the reading strategies and reading comprehension of the Health Analyst Department students. The Health Analyst Department students need reading strategies to acquire knowledge according to their specific needs. They need to be able to comprehend their target texts. This research aimed to identify the Health Analyst Department students’ reading strategies and reading comprehension achievement as well as to correlate their reading strategies to reading comprehension. This research employed qualitative method. The research utilized Mokhtari and Sheorey’ (2002) survey of reading strategies (SORS) and reading comprehension test (RCT) as research instruments. All research data of reading strategies (global, problem solving and support reading strategies) and reading comprehension were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, linear regression and Pearson’s Product Moment correlation test. The students frequently utilized the problem solving reading strategies in comprehending their target texts. The correlation coefficient of support reading strategies is greater than the two others. Those results give indications that the students’ choices of reading strategies do not always give better reading comprehension. The students’ reading strategies have significant positive correlation to their reading comprehension with regard to their comprehending the target texts.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is a cardiovascular emergency caused by a sudden reduction in myocardial blood flow due to coronary artery obstruction, resulting in myocardial injury. Cardiac Troponin I is a specific biomarker of myocardial damage, whereas Mean Platelet Volume (MPV) and Platelet Large Cell Ratio (P-LCR) are indicators of platelet activity associated with atherothrombotic processes. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between Troponin I levels and MPV and P-LCR values in patients with ACS at Haji Regional General Hospital, East Java Province. An analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted from January to February 2026. A total of 30 patients diagnosed with ACS were selected using purposive sampling. Troponin I levels were measured using the Fluorescence Immunoassay method, while MPV and P-LCR were assessed using fluorescence flow cytometry. Data were analyzed using Spearman correlation analysis. The results showed that the mean Troponin I level was 2.49 ng/mL, the mean MPV was 10.29 fL, and the mean P-LCR was 26.63%. Spearman analysis demonstrated a significant positive correlation between Troponin I and MPV (p=0.047; r=0.365) as well as between Troponin I and P-LCR (p=0.039; r=0.380). It can be concluded that increased Troponin I levels are associated with elevated platelet activity parameters, indicating that MPV and P-LCR may serve as supportive hematological markers in the evaluation of patients with acute coronary syndrome.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) is a hematological parameter widely used to assess inflammatory processes, including chronic inflammation in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Although 3.8% sodium citrate is recommended as the standard anticoagulant for the Westergren ESR method, EDTA is more commonly used in clinical laboratories because of its practicality, which may influence ESR measurements. Therefore, this study aimed to compare ESR values obtained using EDTA and 3.8% sodium citrate anticoagulants in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. This comparative observational study with a cross-sectional design involved 34 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus selected through purposive sampling. ESR measurements were performed using the Westergren method on paired blood samples collected in EDTA and 3.8% sodium citrate anticoagulants. The results showed that the mean ESR value was 34.32 ± 20.85 mm/hour (median: 32 mm/hour) for EDTA samples and 32.59 ± 21.57 mm/hour (median: 31 mm/hour) for 3.8% sodium citrate samples. Statistical analysis using the paired sample t-test revealed a significant difference between the two anticoagulants (p = 0.016). These findings indicate that the type of anticoagulant significantly affects ESR measurements in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Therefore, 3.8% sodium citrate remains the preferred anticoagulant for the Westergren ESR method because it better preserves the physiological characteristics of blood samples and supports more accurate clinical interpretation of ESR results.
