Abstract

The research is purposed to describe the problem-solving ability of the Senior High School XI grader students in Palu city. The measurement of the problem-solving ability could be determined by solving the exercises of Hydrocarbon and Thermochemistry topics using the Polya’s sequences; consisting of understanding the problem, devising, doing the plan, and evaluating. The ability of students’ problem solving is classified well in every sequence in case of the number of high category students is 60%. The samples are 240 of 507 XI grade students learning chemistry in SMAN 3 and SMA Madani Terpadu in Palu City. The data of problem-solving is determined by providing a test in the form of a validated assay. The result shows the average of XI graders in Palu City only capable of solving the problem without understanding, devising, and evaluating while solving hydrocarbon topics. The ability is not even possessed by students in Thermochemistry. It implies that senior high school students in Palu could not represent the problem in the form of figure, symbol, statement, and mathematics statement or have not been able to devise the problem solving and correlate the obtained result with the related theory or concept. Therefore, the students should be trained to solve the problem in learning by application the problem-solving sequences.

Abstract

Honesty and responsibility should be a principle held by students. But, there are still problems of dishonesty and irresponsibility of students during exams. This study aimed to analyze the honesty and responsibility character of chemistry students during exams. The research samples were 39 students. Data were collected by observation and interviews technique, by using observation and questionnaires sheets. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics. The results showed that the honesty and responsibility of chemistry students were in the sufficient category where the percentage of honesty and responsibility of students based on the observation sheets was 43.6% and 49%, respectively. While the questionnaire responsibility students were 46.2% and 43.6%, respectively.

Abstract

Dye waste from industries such as batik can pollute the environment and endanger health because it is carcinogenic. One solution to handle this is to use biochar as an adsorbent, where in this study, the biomass used as biochar is palapi wood waste in the form of wood husks. This study aims to determine the adsorption capacity of biochar from palapi wood waste against indigsol blue and remazol yellow dyes with variations in weight, time, and pH. The method used in this study is the pyrolysis method, namely the process of heating biomass materials at high temperatures without or with little oxygen. Characterization was carried out by determining the water content, ash content, functional groups, and morphology of the biochar. Decolorization efficiency was analyzed using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The results showed that the water content at temperatures of 400 ℃, 450 ℃, and 500 ℃ were 11.90%, 6.60%, and 5.30%, respectively. The ash content at the same temperature was 2.30%, 7.50%, and 8.70%, respectively. The maximum weight with variations of 50, 75, 100, and 125 mg in adsorbing 2 dyes is 125 mg with an adsorption percentage of indigosol blue dye of 41.00% and remazol yellow dye of 42.90%. The optimum time for biochar to adsorb indigosol blue dye is 50 minutes, with an adsorption percentage of 47.90, and remazol yellow dye for 40 minutes, with an adsorption percentage of 79.00%. The optimum pH of indigosol blue and remazol yellow dyes by biochar occurs at pH 7, with an adsorption percentage of indigosol blue dye of 93.03% and remazol yellow dye of 87.40%. The absorption capacity of biochar for indigosol blue and remazol yellow dyes follows the Langmuir absorption isotherm of 0.92 mg/g and 0.79 mg/g, respectively.
