Abstract

Sunlight is an energy source for the survival of living on earth, but the overexposure on the skin provides the degree of damage depends on the frequency and duration of sunlight exposure on the skin. The ability to withstand ultraviolet rays of a sunscreen is rated as Sun Protecting Factor / SPF. This study aims to determine the SPF (Sun Protection Factor) n-Hexane ethanol extract (1:1) of rice bran (Oryza sativa), using spectrophotometry UV-Vis method. Rice bran was extracted by soxhletasi using mixed solution of n-Hexane ethanol (1: 1), then prepared sample solution using absolute ethanol with the concentration series of 100 ppm, 150 ppm, 200 ppm, 250 ppm, and 300 ppm. The absorbance of solutions were then measured by UV-Vis spectrophotometer with a wavelength of 280-400 nm. Result showed that n-Heksan ethanol ekstract (1:1) of rice bran can effectively block the UV-B ray. The SPF values acquired are starting from a concentration of 200 ppm, where the SPF value is 2,355 and then at concentration of 250 ppm is 2,884 and at concentration of 300 ppm is 3.483.Keywords:  Rice bran, Oryza sativa, sunscreen, spectrophotometry.

Abstract

Background: Early rupture of membranes is one of the most common pregnancy complications. The incidence of premature rupture of membranes ranges from 5-10% of cases. Preterm premature rupture of membrane occurs in 1% of all pregnancies, 70% of cases of premature rupture of the membranes occur in term pregnancy. In West Nusa Tenggara, 45% of maternal deaths occurred due to bleeding, 14% due to preeclampsia, 1% of prolonged labour (old or stalled openings), 4% infections and 36% of other cases. Aims: The purpose of this study is to analyse some predisposition factors of premature rupture membranes in Maternity Room of General Hospital of West Nusa Tenggara Province in 2012. Methods: This study is observational analytic with cross-sectional design. The population in this study were all maternal mothers at West Nusa Tenggara Provincial Hospital in January - December 2012 with 1027 births and the sample used were 576 samples consisting of 288 case samples and 288 control samples, using systematic random sampling technique. Results: From the result, the age group of 20-35 years old as much as 154 samples (53.5%). The most parity 220 sample (76 .4%), in work mother of 149 samples (51.7%). The result of multivariate analysis using logistic regression showed that age is the most dominant influence which cause the incidence of early rupture of membrane (wald = 20.209) Conclusion: Multivariate analysis showed that there was one variable that proved to have an effect on the incidence of premature rupture of membrane, i.e. mother age with p = 0,000 with OR = 3.441 mean maternal mother with age <20 and> 35 had 3.44 times risk of premature rupture of membranes. Therefore, it is imperative that women are educated in the risk factors and the signs and symptoms of premature rupture of membranes so that in case of membrane breaks, they can seek for immediate treatment.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effective concentration of rice bran oil which can protect against ultraviolet (UV) rays as well as formulate it in compact powder preparation followed by determination of its Sun Protecting Factor (SPF) value. Rice bran samples were extracted using the Soxhlet extraction method with n-hexane: ethanol (1:1) as the solvent. Further identification of the γ-oryzanol in rice bran oil was carried out using TLC silica gel GF254 with eluent of n-hexane:ethyl acetate (3:1). The obtained γ-oryzanol in rice bran oil was used as the ingredient to develop the compact powder which is made into five formulas with 0,05 %-0,25 % concentration. All formulas were characterized, including homogeneity, adhesion and crack test. UV-Visible spectrophotometry was used to determine the SPF value of rice bran oil and its compact powder. The identification results demonstrated a positive presence of the chemical γ-oryzanol in the rice bran oil. At concentrations of 500, 1000, 1500, 2000, and 2500 ppm, rice bran oil may protect against UV rays with SPF values ranging from 1.741 to 11.884. The result showed that all formulas dispersed homogeneously, performed well in terms of compactness, and had no breaks or cracks discovered. Meanwhile, the SPF values of all formulas are found to be 1.390 and 1.274. The results indicate that the SPF values are shallow and are included in the minimal SPF category (2-4) in protecting against UV rays.
