Abstract

Background: Exposure to the endocrine-disrupting chemical bisphenol A (BPA) is a suspected contributor to the type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) pandemic. This study aimed to move beyond simple correlation and investigate the adjusted association between urinary BPA and the dual pathophysiological defects of T2DM—insulin resistance and pancreatic β-cell failure—with a novel emphasis on contrasting basal versus stimulated β-cell function in an understudied Indonesian cohort. Methods: In a cross-sectional study, 40 patients with T2DM were recruited from a tertiary hospital in Palembang, Indonesia. Urinary BPA was quantified by liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LCMS). Insulin resistance was assessed by the homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). β-cell function was evaluated using the C-peptide index (CPI) at fasting and 1-hour post-75g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). Multivariable linear regression models were constructed to determine the association between urinary BPA (log-transformed) and metabolic indices, adjusting for age, gender, and body mass index (BMI). Results: After adjusting for confounders, higher log-urinary BPA remained a significant independent predictor of higher log-HOMA-IR (β = 0.58, 95% CI: 0.31-0.85, p < 0.001). BPA was also independently associated with poorer β-cell function, showing a significant inverse association with the fasting CPI (β = -0.45, 95% CI: -0.73 to -0.17, p = 0.003). Critically, this association was markedly stronger and more profound with the 1-hour stimulated CPI (β = -0.79, 95% CI: -0.99 to -0.59, p < 0.001). The variance in stimulated CPI explained by the model (R2) was substantially higher than for other indices. Conclusion: Higher environmental BPA exposure is independently associated with both heightened insulin resistance and compromised β-cell function in T2DM. The distinctly stronger association with impaired stimulated β-cell secretion, even after adjusting for key confounders, identifies a critical mechanism by which BPA may accelerate functional β-cell exhaustion, the pivotal event in T2DM progression.

Abstract

This study aims to explore in depth the economic impact experienced by the community as a result of tourism development in Lantan Village, as well as the social impacts arising from these activities on the local residents. This research is expected to serve as a useful medium for sharing the author’s knowledge regarding the analysis of the impact of tourism development on the economy and social life of the community in Lantan Village, Batukliang Utara District, Central Lombok Regency. The research employs a qualitative approach using a case study strategy, where primary data were collected through in-depth interviews with tourism business actors, MSME entrepreneurs, and community leaders directly involved in tourism activities in Lantan Village. Data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study indicate that most informants gave positive responses toward the presence of tourism, as it has increased community income and expanded employment opportunities. In addition, tourism development has brought significant social impacts, such as enhanced social interaction, changes in lifestyle, and a growing awareness among the community about the importance of preserving the local environment and culture amidst the ongoing development of the tourism sector.

Abstract

The use of sea sand in construction work from an economic point of view does have advantages. One of them is increasing the income of the sea sand collectors who are spread throughout the area in Fakfak Regency. In addition, the potential availability of sea sand is quite large and is able to accommodate all types of concrete construction work in this area. This study aims to determine and analyze the use of sea sand in the AC-WC mixture of course by doing the Marshall test. This study uses variations in asphalt content of 5.0%, 5.5%, 6.0%, 6.5% and 7.0%, this study was carried out using Marshall testing in accordance with the general specifications of Bina Marga 2018. The results of the research conducted showed a relationship asphalt content and Marshall parameters such as stability value, VMA, density, MQ at an asphalt content of 5.0%-7.0%, meet the specifications of 1932 kg, 19.84%, 2.26 gr/cm3 and 1031 kg/mm. Values of VIM, VFWA and flow at 5.5% asphalt content are known to not meet the mix spasticity, namely 8.07%, 59.71% and 1.67 mm. Based on the Marshall parameter data, the Optimum Asphalt Content value is 6.5%.

Abstract

Technological innovation in cocoa cultivation has become increasingly urgent in line with the growing global demand for high-quality cocoa products. This literature review aims to evaluate various modern agricultural technologies applied in cocoa cultivation and examine how these technologies contribute to improving yield and bean quality. The review covers innovations such as precision irrigation systems, sensor-based fertilization, the use of high-yield and disease-resistant varieties, agroforestry practices, and post-harvest technologies including controlled fermentation and mechanical drying. The methodology involved a systematic search of scientific articles, technical reports, and publications from agricultural institutions published between 2010 and 2025, using databases such as Scopus, Google Scholar, and the portals of IPB University and the Indonesian Agency for Agricultural Research and Development. Selection criteria were based on relevance, empirical impact, and methodological rigor. The findings identified five key domains of innovation: irrigation and water management, soil fertility and nutrient management, genetic improvement of varieties, agroforestry systems, and post-harvest technologies. Each innovation demonstrated significant improvements in yield (ranging from 20–50%) and bean quality (sensory attributes, fat content, product cleanliness). The integration of multiple technologies produced higher synergistic effects. Key challenges include slow adoption due to limited capital and farmers’ technical knowledge, as well as inadequate infrastructure. Recommendations include enhancing access to technology training, providing policy and financial support, and conducting further research on the application of digital and IoT-based technologies in cocoa cultivation. This study provides a foundation for understanding and developing sustainable cocoa cultivation strategies in the modern era.

Abstract

Cocoa is one of Indonesia’s leading commodities that significantly contributes to the national economy, particularly in the Southeast Sulawesi region. This area is known as one of the largest cocoa-producing centers in Indonesia, with vast potential for further development. This study aims to examine the current state of cocoa cultivation in Southeast Sulawesi and its prospects in facing the challenges of the global market through a literature review approach. The study highlights various aspects, including agroecological conditions, cultivation techniques, productivity levels, and challenges in the supply chain and marketing. The findings indicate that cocoa development in Southeast Sulawesi has great potential but still faces several issues, such as poor seed quality, pest and disease attacks, and limited post-harvest technological innovation. Furthermore, environmental sustainability and product certification have become major requirements in global trade. Strengthening farmers’ capacity, implementing sustainable agricultural practices, and providing strong support from both local and national governments are key factors in enhancing the competitiveness of Southeast Sulawesi cocoa in international markets. With proper management strategies, cocoa can become a highly competitive leading commodity that contributes to improving local community welfare.
