Abstract

The objectives of this present investigation were to evaluate effects of using shell of freshwater snail as major source of calcium in the diets on performance and bone mineralization of growing native chicks (1-12 weeks of age). There were four dietary treatments. The first was a basal diet (negative control) containing 0.5 % bone meal, but deficient in phosphor. Three other diets which were relatively the same in composition as that of basal diet, but one supplemented with 2.5 % oyster shell (positive control) and two with 2.5% shell of freshwater snail obtained from two different water bodies: lake and rice field, respectively. One hundred birds of native chicken were divided into four groups of treatments with five replicates with 5 birds each and offered experimental diets for 12 weeks. Parameters measured included: body weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion ratio (FCR), weight of tibia bone and their ash and mineral (Ca and P) composition and retention. The chicks fed on diets containing shell of freshwater snails showed no significantly difference in body weight gain, feed intake and FCR with those fed on diet containing oyster shell, but significantly lower body weight gain than those fed on basal diet containing only bone meal. Feeding of diets supplemented with shell of snails and oyster decreased significantly the body weight gain. However, no significantly difference was observed in the weight and content of ash, Ca and P of tibia bone. Key words : freshwater snail, native chicken, mineral nutrition, bone mineralization

Abstract

An experiment was conducted to determine the percentage of rate, nutrient contents and physical properties of grinding and roasting products of freshwater mussel shell. Fresh mussel samples were collected from four different lakes in West Sumatra: Maninjau, Singkarak, Danau Diatas and Danau Dibawah. The samples of about 3 kg each were processed to separate the shell and their body content. The shells were then dried and processed to produce three different products: raw coarse ground, raw fine ground and roasted fine ground. Parameters measured included: percent rate of meal, the content of DM, ash, Ca and P, and physical properties (angle of response, bulk and compacted bulk densities and specific density). The results showed that grinding and roasting gave no significant effect on specific density and mineral content of the meal product. The rate of meal product and bulk density decreased, while angle of response and compacted bulk density increased significantly. It was concluded that both roasting and grinding could not improve both nutrient content and physical properties of freshwater mussel shell. Key words : freshwater mussel shell, roasting, mineral composition, physical properties

Abstract

The study was conducted to determine mineral content of limestone originated from natural deposit of Bukit Kamang for feedstuff. Six samples were prepared and chemically analyzed. The first was limestone in meal form as a product of local milling industry. Another five samples were deposit components with different color of blackish, dark blue, blue, light blue and white. There was 21 kinds of mineral determined which were divided into 3 groups: macros (Ca, P, Mg, Na, K, Cl and S), trace minerals (Mn, Zn, Fe, Cu, Se, Co and Mo) and toxic elements (As, F, Hg, Cd, Pb, Ni and Cr). The results showed that Bukit Kamang's limestone contained considerable high essential minerals of Ca, Se, Fe and Mn. The limestone consisted of 38%-40% Ca, 388 ppm Se, 295 ppm Fe and 205 ppm Mn. There were two toxic elements detected: Pb and Cd, but their concentration was found relatively low: 28 and 7 ppm, respectively. Keywords: mineral content, limestone, Bukit Kamang, toxic

Abstract

The integrity of beneficiary farmers' groups of Bungo Lapai in the district of Tanah Datar and Tapian Agam in the Payakumbuh City was threatened by the insufficient capability of the groups to fulfill forage requirement and low reproductive performances of their cattle. The aims of the present community services were to maintain the integrity of the two beneficiary groups of cattle farmer through extension program and technical skill training for improvement of technology and nutritive values of forages. The program was initiated by the motivation of the group members through extension program in good farming practices. The groups were then offered feed handling and process facilities, followed by training programs on the techniques of collecting and preserving large amount green feed in the form of silage. The group members were also provided the technical skills to improve the nutritional value of forage through the preparation of supplemented feed produced by utilizing locally available materials that are easily obtained by the farmer. The overall achievements of the program included better motivation of group members in applying good farming practices. Improvement of technical skills in the preservation of large quantity of green fodder in form of silage gave a positive impact of has a good impact on farmer motivation. The use mineral feed supplements might improve the nutritional value of forages and reproductive performances of cattle.

Abstract

This community service was aimed to evaluate beneficial effect and constrains of mineral supplementation onfeed of Simmental heifers that be raised by smallholders. Mineral were formulated by using locally available materials (rock flour, limestone, fresh water oyster shell meal) and prepared in loose and lick-block forms. The local mineral formulas were fed to 24 Simmental heifers raised by 17 smallholders for 14 weeks in four treatments: P0 (no supplementation, control), P1 (supplemented with commercial mineral premix), P2 (supplemented with local mineral feed in loose meal), and P3 (supplemented with local mineral feed in form). Each treatment consisted of 6 heifers as replication. Parameters measured included: blood minerals (Ca, P, Mg) and blood hematology (hemoglobin (Hb), mean corpuscular Hb concentration (MCHC), total red blood cell (RBC), white blood cell (WBC), hematocrit concentration (HCT)), total protein, and estrus onset. Results showed that heifers supplemented with local minerals (P2 and P3) were detected earlier estrus onset than the control (P0) and that supplemented with commercial mineral premix (P1). Local mineral supplementation gave also positive effect on blood mineral, protein and hematological profiles, even though there were no statistically difference. It was concluded that mineral supplementation gave positive effect of reproduction performances and nutritional status of Simmental heifers. Local mineral offered in lick-block had better effect than that in loose form.
