Abstract

Kegiatan komunikasi baik lisan maupun tertulis dalam bahasa Inggris perlu dilakukan secara efektif. Untuk menyampaikan ide, konsep, atau pikiran melalui keterampilan lisan dan tertulis, kita perlu berkonsentrasi penuh untuk menghasilkan informasisesuaidengan pengetahuan yang kita miliki. Activitas membaca adalah salah satu cara yang sangat efektif untuk mengembangkan kebutuhan konsep dan pengetahuan. Artikel ini merupakan laporan penelitian yang bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah adap erbedaan yang signifikan antara prestasi bahasa Inggrismahasiswa yang memiliki aktivitas membaca yang berbeda. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian ex-post facto.Populasi penelitianya adalah mahasiswa semester IV seluruh EED, TTEF UMK di Tahun Akademik 2011/2012. Penelitian ini melibatkan empat mahasiswa untuk membantu dan membimbing mereka dalam menulis skripsi. Keempat mahasiswa meneliti empat keterampilan bahasa Inggris yang berbeda : Menyimak, Berbicara, Membaca, dan Menulis. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan terdapat perbedaan yang signifikan antara prestasi Bahasa Inggris (Listening, Speaking, Reading, dan Writing) mahasiswa semester IV Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Universitas Muria Kudus pada tahun ajaran 2011/2012 dengan kegiatan membaca yang berbeda. Dan mahasiswa dengan aktivitas membaca yang tinggi memiliki prestasi bahasa Inggris lebih baik daripada mereka dengan aktivitas membaca rendah.

Abstract

The objectives of this study are describing the process of teaching English (listening) and identifying the difficulties in teaching (English) listening in a Junior High School in Kudus. This research uses exploratory research design. I will explore qualitative data to analyze the process of the teaching and learning English in Kudus and to identify the need of the learning materials. The subjects of the research are five English teachers’ from a Junior High school in Kudus, they have been teaching English for more than ten years. They have been teaching from different classes, class 7, class 8, and class 9. This study has discovered the challenges and difficulties in learning and teaching in Junior High School in kudus. Most teachers feels that time management become their major challenge in organizing classroom. They have set lesson plan, but sometimes the lesson does not work exactly the same. They have to work with mixed-level students, with students with learning difficulties, and with learners who are coming from different backgrounds. Teachers should be aware that it is part of teachers’ primary duty to cope with every student. Most students can learn a foreign language to some level, but there are many reasons why their improvements are not achieved significantly.

Abstract

Ideal English teacher is very important in teaching and learning English especially in high schools. According to Indonesia government regulation, an ideal English teacher is an English teacher who has 4 competencies. They are pedagogical, personal, social, and professional competence. This article is a report of the research aims to know the students of English Education Department perception of an ideal English teacher in high school level. It is designed through descriptive qualitative research. To collect the data, the writer use questionnaire. The result of this research shows that according to the students, in pedagogical competence, an ideal English teacher should understand the students’ characteristic. While in personal competence, an ideal English teacher should have high responsibilities. Furthermore, in social competence, the students think that an ideal English teacher should not discriminate the students based on the background of the family. In professional competence, an ideal English teacher should use many sources in delivering the material. Finally, the writer hopes this research can be used by the English teacher as a suggestion to be the truly ideal English teacher.
