Abstract

The research was conducted at the first grade of English Teaching Department Madiun in the academic year of 2012/2013. The research method was quasi experimental research. The population in this research was the first grade students of English Teaching Department of IKIP PGRI Madiun. The writer used cluster random sampling to get the sample. The sample consists of 70  students which are divided into two classes, IA consisting 35 students as a control class and IB consisting 35 students as an experimental class. The instruments used to collect the data were reading test to get the score of reading skill and questionnaire to get the score of students’  motivation. Before the instruments were used, the tryout was done to know the validity and reliability of instruments. The writer analyzed the data in term of their frequency distribution, normality, and homogeneity. Then, the data were analyzed by using multifactoral analysis 2X2, then followed by Tukey test. The findings in this research lead to some conclusions: (1) MURDER is more effective than DM for teaching reading; (2) The students having high motivation have better reading skill than the students having low motivation; and (3) There is an interaction between teaching methods and students’ motivation for teaching reading. MURDER is suitable for students having high motivation and DM is suitable for students having low motivation.Key words: Teaching Reading, MURDER, DM, Students’ Motivation

Abstract

Over the last few decades, many instructors have been trying all kinds of teaching methods, but without benefit. Nevertheless, in the 1986, a new technique is appeared which called K-W-L technique. It is specified for reading comprehension passages because reading skill is not easy matter for students. Therefore, the K-W-L technique is a good one for thinking and experiences. The outcomes of present research appeared that K-W-L enables the students to activate their prior knowledge and operate their thinking.

Abstract

This research is aimed at (1) knowing whether or not the implementation of Co-op Co-op technique can increase the students’ reading ability, (2) knowing the strengths and weaknesses of the implememtation of co-op co-op to teach reading at second grade students of IKIP PGRI Madiun. The reseach method is action research. The data are collected by using observation, questionaire, and interview. Then, the data are analyzed by using CCU.  The result of the research is the coop coop technique can increase the students’ reading abiliy. The strengths are it can increase students’ motivation, it can make students active in the class. Co-op co-op refers to a variety of teaching techniques in which students work in small groups to learn academic content. In cooperative classroom, students are expected to help each other discuss and argue.With each other, to assess each other’s understanding and fill in each other’s undertanding.Keywords: Co-op Co-op technique, reading ability, motivation, cooperative, active

Abstract

Many vocational college graduates got difficulties during job interview process. Therefore, this community service activity aims to enhance vocational college students’ English communication skills, especially in public speaking, during the job interview process. It was done online through a Zoom meeting, which was opened for vocational college students in Madiun City, East Java. The activity was done in May 2024, starting from the preparation, implementation, and evaluation process. It ran well and benefited vocational college students by equipping them with and broadening their knowledge regarding the job interview process. The participants’ feedback was positive, in which the survey results showed that the community service activity improved their public speaking skills and confidence. The participants also provided a rough description of the job interview process through mock interviews. It is hoped that a similar activity will be carried out continuously in the future.            Keywords: English, Public Speaking, Training, Vocational College, Vocational Students Banyak lulusan kampus vokasi yang kesulitan saat menjalani proses interviu kerja. Untuk itu, kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berkomunikasi bahasa Inggris mahasiswa vokasi terutama pada public speaking di proses wawancara kerja. Kegiatan ini dilaksanakan secara daring melalui Zoom meeting yang dibuka bagi mahasiswa vokasi di kota Madiun, Jawa Timur. Kegiatan ini dilakukan pada bulan Mei 2024 yang dimulai dari proses persiapan, pelaksanaan dan evaluasi. Kegiatan berjalan dengan lancar dan bermanfaat bagi para mahasiswa vokasi dalam memperlengkapi dan memperluas wawasan mereka mengenai proses wawancara kerja. Umpan balik dari para peserta menunjukkan nilai positive dimana hasil survei menunjukkan bahwa kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini meningkatkan kemampuan public speaking para peserta dan rasa percaya diri mereka. Para peserta juga mendapatkan gambaran kasar mengenai proses wawancara kerja melalui kegiatan mock-interview. Diharapkan bahwa kegiatan sejenis dapat diadakan berkelanjutan di masa mendatang.Kata kunci: Bahasa Inggris, Public Speaking, Pelatihan, Kampus Vokasi, Mahasiswa Vokasi

Abstract

Several ICT tools are chosen as media in reading and writing courses, such as socrative for practicing and testing vocabulary, google form for practicing and evaluating reading ability, and writeabout for practicing students' writing skills based on given topics. The study analyze classroom practices of a reading and writing course in hybrid setting which integrated Task-Based Learning (TBL) and Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). It is a case study with quantitative approach. This project was done in 6 classes of reading and writing course consisted of 159 students in total. The data was gathered through classroom observation, pre-, and post-test scores analysis, and questionnaire analysis about students' feedback. The pre-and post-test scores were analyzed using descriptive statistical analysis, paired sample t-test, and changing level analysis.The findings indicated that teachers integrated TBL and various ICT tools to accomplish the course description and objectives. The result of those three data analyses described significant improvement in students' learning outcomes. The course received positive responses from the students with a 4.02 out of 5 (good level). The integration of TBL and ICT in a reading and writing course is considerable in enhancing students' achievement and enjoyment in hybrid setting. This study provided benefit from insight into the knowledge and practice for reading and writing lecturers to integrate TBL and ICT in their instruction particularly in hybrid context.
