Abstract

This study examined the effect of teaching glossary and personality traits on vocabulary learning. Two groups of students who had different personality (extroverted and introverted) were exposed to two types of glosses: paper and online-based glossary. The two groups underwent two-month treatment. Prior to and after the treatment, each group was given pre and posttest. In calculating the data, two-way ANOVA was used. The results of the study showed that extroverted students learned vocabulary better through paper-based glossary, while introverted students learned vocabulary better through online-based. Further research needs to be conducted to determine whether age influences the use of teaching glossary or not.

Abstract

There have been several studies interested in combining Internet Computer Technology (ICT) in writing because it improves the writing performance of L2 students in a widespread link to instruction. However, an earlier study has concentrated on the specific writing technologies employed. Few research has examined students' impressions of Screencast's use as an online video-audio tool for delivering feedback. This study adds to the corpus of knowledge about Indonesian students' perspectives on feedback. Participation, revision incorporation, feedback performance, and student preferences are the four feedback components examined in this research. The acquisition of primary data used varied methods. Online perception surveys were sent to Indonesian second-year college students. Personal and quasi interviews were also employed to improve data and learn what may drive students to perceive more. To analyse the interview data, a descriptive analysis was performed. Students reported a high level of pleasure while using video feedback with a particular technology, Screencast, in an online writing course. The interview data provide support. The students believed that video feedback allows them to strengthen their writing skills more effectively than textual feedback provided by the teacher. In this study, the implications for language teaching and learning practice are examined further.

Abstract

Writing requires a complex skill, and thus students need to regulate themselves in employing the appropriate strategies to achieve good writing performance. The present research investigated Self-Regulated Writing (SRW) strategies used by EFL (English as a Foreign Language) university students. It contrasted the students' strategies related to the complex structure of the texts (i.e., paragraphs and essays) and students writing performance. The data information came from two separate sets of self-regulated learning strategy questionnaire, as well as writing outcomes of the students. Descriptive statistics and the Mann-Whitney U test were utilized to evaluate the data. The six dimensions of SRW strategies were extensively utilized in paragraph and essay writings. The six dimensions include motive, method, time, performance, physical environment, and social environment. Interestingly, the social environment dimension had the highest mean score, showing that the students needed assistance from their peers and available learning resources. Meanwhile, the motive dimension obtained the lowest mean in both paragraph and essay writings. Furthermore, the analysis showed no significant statistical difference in using SRW strategies in writing paragraphs and essays except in the method dimension. The difference in strategy use based on achievement was also not significant. The results indicate that the students applied similar SRW strategies in paragraph and essay writings regardless of their proficiency levels. Pedagogical implications and recommendations for future research are also further discussed in the article.

Abstract

This study aims to identify differences in public speaking anxiety levels between male and female students. A quantitative approach with a comparative design was used. The participants consisted of all 194 twelfth-grade students at SMAN 61 Jakarta, including 83 male and 111 female students. Data were collected through a questionnaire adapted from the Personal Report of Public Speaking Anxiety, which was translated and revalidated to suit the participant context. After a validity test, 27 items were included in the analysis. Anxiety scores were calculated using a three-step formula and categorized into low, moderate, and high levels. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics and an independent samples t-test with SPSS version 29. The results showed no significant difference in public speaking anxiety between male and female students. However, descriptive findings indicated that female students generally showed slightly higher anxiety levels. This suggests that anxiety is influenced more by personal factors than gender. Educators are encouraged to provide equal speaking opportunities and build supportive classroom environments for all students.
