Abstract

In written English production, using passive voice is one of the most challenging aspects to master. This study aims to analyze the frequency, structure, and functions of passive voice in written English, especially in political newspaper articles. A descriptive qualitative approach was used for this study, with data collection techniques in the form of document studies on four samples of newspaper articles regarding political issues that happened in Indonesia in early 2025; two articles were taken from The Jakarta Post, and two others were from ANTARA, published around January to February 2025. The result obtained from 4 political news articles shows that of the total 82 sentences analyzed, 26 sentences (31%) are passive voices. Two main types found were: "to-be" passive form (formal passive), 75%, and "to get" passive 25%. This indicates that passive sentence usage in political news articles is quite common. The passive form, with or without phrases, is used by the writers to emphasize some truths to be involved in an event or incident and express their opinion to influence the reader's mind.

Abstract

Abstract

Foreign language anxiety (FLA) has been a significant area of research in second language acquisition, due to its impact on language learning. However, research focusing on teachers’ awareness of students' FLA remains limited, despite suggestions in the literature that educators play a crucial role in helping students cope with anxiety. To address this gap, the present study explores the awareness of junior high school teachers on students’ FLA. A case study approach was employed, utilizing semi-structured interviews with three junior high school English teachers in Lampung, Indonesia. The data were analysed thematically. The findings indicate that the teachers were generally aware of FLA and could identify its signs, causes, and impact on language learning. However, they appeared to lack awareness that FLA is context-specific and distinct from other forms of anxiety. The study concludes with implications for teacher training and pedagogical practice in relation to managing FLA in the classroom.

Abstract

Education is one of the strategic efforts to improve the quality of human resources, particularly through the equitable distribution of access to educational scholarships. However, in practice, many young people still lack adequate information regarding overseas educational scholarships. Therefore, efforts are needed to disseminate information about international scholarships through socialization activities. This community service program aims to enhance youths’ understanding of various overseas scholarship opportunities and the requirements that need to be prepared from an early stage. This activity employed a descriptive qualitative approach, focusing on youths’ perceptions of the implementation of an overseas scholarship socialization program. The activity was conducted at the Community Hall of Gunung Terang Sub-district, Bandar Lampung, involving 13 youth members of Karang Taruna Youngunter. Data were collected through open-ended questionnaires and post-activity interviews with the participants. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify changes in perceptions, levels of understanding, and participants’ motivation. The outcomes of the program were assessed based on indicators including increased knowledge of scholarship types and requirements, enhanced motivation to prepare for scholarship applications, and heightened awareness of the importance of early preparation. The findings indicate improvements in participants’ understanding and motivation, as well as the emergence of an action-oriented mindset in planning initial steps for overseas educational scholarship preparation, suggesting that this activity has the potential to serve as an initial model of youth empowerment at the community level.

Abstract

ABSTRACT THE USE OF WEBTOON TO IMPROVE TENTH GRADE STUDENTS WRITING SKILL IN DESCRIPTIVE TEXT AT SMA IT BAITUL JANNAH BANDAR LAMPUNG Adji Wibisono Tansil This study investigates the effect of using Webtoon as a learning medium to improve students’ writing skills in descriptive text. The research was conducted using a quantitative pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach. The sample consisted of 21 tenth-grade students at SMA Baitul Jannah Bandar Lampung. Data were collected through writing tests administered before and after the treatment. The assessment focused on five aspects of writing: content, organization, vocabulary, language use, and mechanics. The data were analyzed by using a Paired-Sample t-test through SPSS. The results showed that students’ writing achievement improved, as indicated by the increase in the mean score from 50.00 in the pre-test to 79.33 in the post-test. The significance value was 0.000, which is lower than 0.05 (0.000 < 0.05). This indicates that there was a significant difference in students’ writing skills before and after being taught using Webtoon, so the hypothesis was accepted. In conclusion, the use of Webtoon as a learning medium has a positive impact on students’ writing skills, particularly in descriptive text. It enhances students’ motivation and engagement while helping them develop clearer and more structured writing. Therefore, Webtoon can be considered an effective alternative medium for teaching writing in English classrooms. Keywords: webtoon, descriptive text, writing

Abstract

The incorporation of digital technology into English as a Foreign Language (EFL) education has been increasingly emphasised, but few studies have critically examined how teachers confront problems in sustaining technology-enhanced classroom practices in everyday teaching realities. This study explores the challenges faced by EFL teachers in integrating digital technology into English courses at secondary schools in Indonesia. The research was conducted qualitatively and exploratively with three English teachers from three distinct senior high schools in Bandar Lampung, Indonesia. Data was acquired through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations and document analysis. Data were analysed using Braun and Clarke’s reflexive thematic analysis. The findings reveal four interrelated themes: persistent infrastructural instability hinders technology-integrated teaching; teachers face pedagogical and emotional challenges in digital teaching; technology integration demands ongoing adaptation and improvisation; and institutional support is uneven and insufficient. The findings indicate that technology integration is not a smooth and linear process but a negotiated pedagogical practice affected by infrastructural restrictions, student involvement concerns, institutional constraints and teachers’ adaptive methods. The study foregrounds the significance of moving beyond the narratives of technology adoption to a more critical understanding of the lived realities of digital education in EFL environments. The report suggests improved infrastructural support, context-sensitive professional development and durable institutional policies to facilitate meaningful technology integration in ELT.
