Abstract

Abstract Improving the quality of education has always been done continuously by the government, the teachers, and other parties interested in education. However, the fact shows that there are still many challenges that we still need to overcome, one of them being teachers’ lack of understanding their students’ cognitive condition. This current program is one of the ways to solve the problem, that is training SMA English teachers in Jayapura to enable them to identify their students’ cognitive condition, especially their multiple intelligences. Different person may have different types of multiple intelligence. The type of the multiple intelligence one has will influence the way he or she think and see the world. Multiple intelligence consists of Linguistics, Mathematics, Music, Sapatial, Kinsthetic, Interpersonal, Intrapersonal, and Natural.. The training was conducted through a lecture session and practice. A pre-test and post-test were given before and after the training. The result of pre-test shows that English teachers of senior high schools in Jayapura are still not familiar with multiple intelligences. After training was conducted, most participants believe that multiple intelligence can be used for the basis in preparing teaching materials in order the students to absorb the materials well, resulting in the better mastery of English. Abstrak Meningkatkan kuaitas pendidikan telah terus dilakukan oleh peerintah, para guru, dan pihak-pihak lain yang terkait. Abstract

The fact shows that teaching writing English as a foreign language in Indoneia is not easy. The students’ problems seem to be related to grammar, vocabulary, genre and mostly cohesion.  We should always find appropriate better ways to solve this problem. One of the ways to solve this problem may be the application of  Systemic Fumctional Linguistics, especially the use of Theme in shaping a cohesive text. It is shaped by making the Theme of the clause be related with the Theme or the Rheme of the previous clauses. Keywords: Theme, Rheme, Clause, Cohesion

Abstract

This study examines the integration of local wisdom values of the Kamoro Tribe (Mimika Wee) into Natural and Social Science (IPAS) learning for fourth-grade students at SD Negeri 3 Mimika, Central Papua, specifically on biotic and abiotic components. Sago (Metroxylon sagu) is a central element in the lives of the Kamoro people, representing a complex interaction between living organisms (biotic) and their environment (abiotic). This research employs descriptive qualitative methods with an ethnopedagogical approach involving literature review, participatory observation in sago groves, and in-depth interviews with the fourth-grade teacher and Kamoro traditional elders. The findings reveal that: (1) utilizing the sago forest as a contextual learning resource successfully transforms abstract biotic-abiotic concepts into concrete and meaningful learning experiences; (2) the integration of Kamoro ethnoscience effectively enhances student engagement and conceptual understanding; and (3) this approach aligns with the Merdeka Curriculum's demands in fostering the Pancasila Student Profile, particularly the dimensions of faith, piety to God Almighty, and noble character (sub-element of environmental stewardship), global diversity, and mutual cooperation. The implications of this study support the development of locally-contextualized IPAS teaching modules based on local ethnoscience, relevant for students in Papua's coastal regions.

Abstract

Listening and speaking skills are fundamental language competencies that must be developed in the early years of elementary education because they serve as the foundation for literacy development and effective communication. However, many first-grade students experience difficulties in understanding oral information and expressing ideas verbally during classroom learning. This study aimed to examine the effect of integrating audio books and the read-aloud method on the listening and speaking skills of first-grade elementary school students. The study employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group design. The participants consisted of 60 first-grade students from SD Negeri 3 Mimika Baru, Indonesia, divided into an experimental group (30 students) and a control group (30 students). Data were collected through listening comprehension tests and speaking performance assessment rubrics. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, normalized gain (N-Gain), and Independent Samples t-test. The results revealed that students in the experimental group demonstrated significantly higher improvements in both listening and speaking skills compared to those in the control group. The experimental group achieved an N-Gain of 0.61 for listening skills and 0.60 for speaking skills, while the control group obtained an N-Gain of only 0.24 for both variables. Furthermore, the t-test results showed significant differences between the two groups in listening skills (t = 8.72, p < 0.05) and speaking skills (t = 8.49, p < 0.05). These findings indicate that the integration of audio books and the read-aloud method is effective in enhancing elementary students’ listening and speaking abilities and can serve as an innovative instructional strategy in language learning.
