Abstract

Globalization and neo liberal policies such as liberalization and privatization have generated a significant growth for FDI and considered an important source for capital and foreign currency, capable of spurring economic growth in developing countries. One sector that received particular attention, due to its significant contributions towards economic development, especially in Indonesia, is tourism. Tourism investments in Indonesia are mainly focused on the development of fully-integrated resort sites that help boost the construction of tourist facilities such as hotels and the development of the surrounding environment through social and cultural aspects. The total contribution of travel and tourism to GDP was IDR736.3 billion or 8.9% of GDP in 2012. Foreign direct tourism investments grew by 210% between 2011 and 2012, or at an annual compound average growth rate of 38% between 2006 and 2012. While the implications are at national level, not much could be gathered on the local perspectives. This paper intends to explore the implication of FDI in tourism sector towards economic growth in one of tourism attraction provinces in Indonesia—Sumatra Utara. Specifically, which economic factors contributed towards FDI inflows and their impacts on economic growth in Sumatra Utara.

Abstract

This paper aims to analyse scientific research trends on Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) through bibliometric studies. This paper extensively investigates all articles published through Scopus regarding FDI in the Tourism context. The author found 275 papers that met the function, subject, and requirements using the phrases Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and Tourism. The author used Vos Viewer as an analysis tool and the Scopus website database was chosen as the research data source. Publications related to the FDI concept found in the 2013-2023 period based on the Scopus index database showed a significant increase in 2019. As economic globalization continues to develop, interest in foreign direct investment (FDI) has also increased. The highest number of publications in the last ten years occurred in 2023. Judging from the country of origin of the publications, China is the leading country in terms of the number of authors, universities, number of documents, citations and research collaborations related to FDI. Current research trends are summarized into four cluster maps that can illustrate future research directions: Economic Analysis, air transportation, environmental policy, and economic growth. The approach taken by Zupic & Čater conceptually influences the framework for building dimensions and indicators used to measure FDI. The author only focuses on collecting publication data from the Scopus database, so research with other data sources may produce different research patterns to this FDI bibliometric research. This research presents a concise overview of bibliometric studies on FDI and provides recommendations for future research directions in mapping theme and subtheme clusters. Currently, research examining FDI in the context of tourism is still very limited, specially complete insights regarding the literature review of FDI in the export context. Key Words : Analisis Bibliometrik, Foreign Direct Investment, Tourism, Scopus, Vos viewer.

Abstract

This paper aims to analyse the growth of the tourism industry and foreign direct investment in NTB, as well as its impact on NTB's economic growth, ten years after Mandalika was designated as an exclusive economic zone. The author uses a qualitative approach with a literature study method. The data used is secondary data from documents, reports, and scientific research on tourism, FDI and regional economic growth. Based on analysis, since operating as a special economic zone, especially when the Pertamina Mandalika International Circuit was inaugurated in 2021, the need for tourism development projects, FDI and investment realization has experienced an upward trend. Lastly, NTB also has a positive trend in economic growth indicators which can be seen from NTB's GRDP. The author only focuses on collecting data from secondary data without conducting interviews with decision makers and tourism related parties in the Mandalika exclusive economic zone, so that research with other data sources may produce research that has a different point of view from this research. This research presents a brief overview of the analysis of tourism growth, FDI and economic growth as an impact of the development of exclusive economic zones which can provide recommendations for future research directions and economic and tourism decision makers in other regions. Currently, research examining the impact of the establishment of exclusive economic zone in the context of tourism, FDI and economic growth in Indonesia is still considered quite limited, especially for relatively new tourism development areas such as Mandalika. Key Words: Tourism, Foreign Direct Investment, Economic Growth, exclusive economic zone, Mandalika.
