Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has left behind a wide range of effects. As a potential future learning paradigm, one of them is the hybrid learning model. In terms of appearance during lectures, whether directly or indirectly through the use of post-COVID-19 pandemic media, this study attempts to characterize the communication ethics of generation Z students at Sebelas Maret University Vocational School in Surakarta. The quantitative descriptive method is thought to be the most appropriate approach to use in addressing the study objectives. Secondary data is derived from internal data in the education sector, publications, books, and other documentation, while primary data is collected online using semi-open questions in addition to observation. It is possible to conclude that there is a lack of good student communication ethics when it comes to appearance during online learning because not all students have turned on their cameras, not all of them are dressed collared, and not all of them follow the dress code that has been established in accordance with previous agreements in a number of courses.

Abstract

Digital era has changed human’s life, including in the practice of fandom. It results in a much broader dissemination of fans-related products produced by the fans, such as alternative universe (AU) as part of fan fiction. In addition, nowadays, Thailand popular culture is rising, especially with the boys’ love drama series (Thai BL drama) which caught foreign viewers’ interest, including Indonesians. This study explores how AU can be considered as a tool for promoting Thai BL drama which goes to fandom actively involvement in the promotion of a foreign country's cultural product with taboo value. It is a qualitative content analysis of online texts which focuses on three female AU author accounts on X with more than 5,000 followers. It is found that AU does not directly impact on the promotion of Thai BL drama, considering the massive modification on the character, setting, plot, and language due to the creativity of AU authors. It is a unique finding that makes it possible to promote Thai BL actors. Finally, it will promote Thai BL drama which the actors are part of, which can be understood from the replies and quotes of X users as AU readers

Abstract

The Korean Wave (Hallyu) phenomenon has formed a new communication pattern among K-Pop fans in Indonesia, including the ARMY Bone community in Bone Regency. This study examined the communication behaviour of the ARMY Bone community through Erving Goffman's Dramaturgy Theory, focusing on the formation of formalist and ritualistic impressions, as well as identity dynamics through the concept of front stage and backstage. This study used a qualitative method of a phenomenological approach, with observation techniques, in-depth interviews, and documentation of seven informants selected purposively. The results of the study show that ARMY Bone's communication behaviour is formed through verbal symbols (Korean terms, BTS songs, the word ‘Borahae’) and nonverbal (dress style, dance, facial expressions) that form a collective identity and impression as loyal fans. In the public space (front stage), members present themselves according to the role of the community, while in the private space (backstage) they show a more authentic personal identity. These findings strengthened the concept of dramaturgy that social identity is formed through performative and contextual self-presentation strategies, along with the dynamics of the community and popular culture they adopt. The implications of these findings suggest that fan communities such as ARMY Bone play a role in shaping young people's social identities through symbolic communication and self-presentation strategies, while also being social spaces that support local expressions of global culture.

Abstract

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is the first pandemic in history where technologies and social media are used on a large scale to make people safe, informed, productive, and connected. At the same time, these technologies enabled the rise of the infodemic, which endangered pandemic control. This study aimed to assess COVID-19 information exposure in the community, the efforts to find related information in online media, and COVID-19 preventive behavior. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 909 participants in Indonesia using the consecutive sampling technique. Data were collected using a questionnaire distributed through social media (WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook) and analyzed using univariate analysis, bivariate analysis (Chi-square test), and multivariate analysis (multiple logistic regression). The results showed that about 838 (92.2%) participants said they often or always obtain information about COVID-19 online, 662 (72.8%) participants stated that information from online sources increased their knowledge of the disease, and 728 (80.1%) said that online information enabled them to make preventive efforts. Marital status (AOR: 1.81, p-value = 0.002) and perceived susceptibility (AOR: 1.42, p-value= 0.011) were the most influential factors for COVID-19 preventive behaviors. Information sources and channels frequently accessed by the community must be professionally managed by the government as valuable tools for mitigating an epidemic or pandemic.
