Abstract

Ever since Tsai Ing-wen came to power, the relations between People’s Republic of China and Taiwan, also known as the Republic of China, has been hitting a new low point. Now, China’s domineering stance towards the small island across the strait is stronger than ever. Before Tsai Ing-wen, under the rule of Kuomintang (KMT) the situation was not like this, it was calmer and more cooperative. The regime change brought about major changes towards Taiwan’s stance and opinion towards China. It is very important to understand what the main cause of this turning point is. This article looks back at the history between KMT and the now reigning party, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to explain this phenomenon and has found that there is a fundamental difference between the two. Using the Social Identity Theory, this article tries to explain the difference between KMT’s and the DPP’s point of view on the Cross-Strait Relations. DPP has long viewed Taiwan as an independent nation, dating back to 1999 when the ‘Resolution on Taiwan’s Future’ was written. Now, as the elected president is from the DPP, their resolution is on full swing.

Abstract

Kuwait is one of the countries in the Middle East which considered as a moderate of Muslim majority state. The amendment of Election Law No. 35 Year 1962 in 2005, which granted women’s rights to vote and run for office, gives a way for women to be able to get more roles in Kuwait’s parliament. However, the implementation of this law takes four years of waiting for Kuwaiti women to get the representation in Kuwait’s legislative assembly. On the national elections in 2008, Kuwaiti women were unable to get the seat. This article argues that the main impediment for women’s inability to win any seat in 11th and 12th Assemblies is caused by the failure of Kuwaiti women to cooperate and support each other. This article aims to examine the Kuwaiti women’s struggle for political rights along with the condition of Kuwaiti’s social norms which affect women’s roles. Using women empowerment theory and the explanation of Kuwait’s socio-political condition, this article also try to predict the future of women representation in Kuwaiti’s political life.

Abstract

Global warming is one of the key issues of the century. The cause of this particular phenomenon is that most economic activities have been carried out by many countries without due consideration of sustainability and the environment. Due to the lack of awareness of both aspects, the Earth’s temperature is getting warmer over the past few years and the long-term effect of such trend is that the sea level has started to rise. Coastal countries start to witness its impacts and some of them have already taken several actions to address this problem. Among the few countries that are determined to take serious measures to address this issue is Denmark. Through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Denmark has worked in cooperation/collaboration with countries that have contributed to this environmental problem in slowing down the phase of global warming by looking directly at its source. In response to this situation, back in November 2017, Denmark’s Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen visited Jakarta to discuss issues of Denmark’s interest in Indonesia, especially about environmental issue in Indonesia. The meeting was marked by a commitment of strengthened relations between two countries, and an exchange of gifts between both leaders. This study aims to find out the reasons why Denmark wanted to cooperate with Indonesia in surmounting environmental problems, and what actions the Danish government has taken to decrease the rate of pollution in Indonesia through the adoption of the National Interest concept. Towards the end, this article shows that Denmark has built several green facilities in order to decrease the pollution level, which partially comes from Indonesia.
