Abstract

The inadequate understanding amongst farmers regarding balanced fertilisation, particularly with regard to fertiliser types, application rates and timing, has resulted in suboptimal rice cultivation practices in Ranomeeto Village, leading to low productivity in comparison to the potential yields that could be achieved. The objective of this study is to analyse the knowledge possessed by farmers in Ranomeeto Village, Ranomeeto Subdistrict, South Konawe Regency, with regard to fertilisation and rice productivity. The present study employs a quantitative approach. The study population consists of all farmers engaged in irrigated rice farming in Ranomeeto Village, totalling 106 farmers. The sampling method employed was a form of probability sampling, specifically simple random sampling. The sample size was determined using the Slovin formula with a 10% margin of error, resulting in a sample of 51 irrigated rice farmers. The data collection techniques employed in this study encompassed in-depth interviews, surveys, and documentation. The study's variables encompassed the farmers' knowledge levels concerning fertilisation and the productivity of irrigated rice. The subsequent data analysis employed quantitative descriptive analysis, utilising percentage and productivity formulas corresponding to the variables under study. The findings of the study suggest that farmers in Ranomeeto Village have relatively good knowledge levels regarding rice field fertilization, particularly with regard to the utilisation of urea and Phonska fertilizers, as evident in their recall, comprehension, and application skills. However, their analytical, evaluative, and creative skills remain deficient. It is evident that farmers' comprehension of manure utilisation is found to be inadequate at all levels of expertise. Rice productivity in Ranomeeto Village reached 4.7 tons/ha, which is higher than the district and sub-district levels. However, this productivity figure is still not optimal when compared to the productivity potential of the high-yielding Inpari 32 variety. Therefore, improved extension services and the application of more appropriate and balanced fertilization techniques are required.

Abstract

Rice husk utilization as an alternative bioenergy source has emerged as a promising innovation to promote renewable energy development while enhancing the economic value of agricultural waste. However, the successful adoption of this innovation depends not only on the availability of appropriate technology but also on various supporting and inhibiting factors that influence its implementation among farmers. This study aimed to analyze the supporting and inhibiting factors affecting the innovation of rice husk utilization as an alternative bioenergy source among paddy farmer groups in Ambopi Village, North Tongauna District, Konawe Regency, Indonesia. A qualitative approach with a case study design was employed. The study involved 17 members of the Sido Makmur Farmer Group, selected using a census technique. Data were collected through field observations, in-depth semi-structured interviews, and documentation, while data analysis followed the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. Data credibility was ensured through source and method triangulation. The findings revealed that the innovation was supported primarily by the abundant availability of rice husk as a renewable biomass resource and by farmers' openness to adopting beneficial agricultural innovations. These factors provide favorable conditions for developing community-based bioenergy using locally available resources. Conversely, limited government policies and extension support, together with inadequate technological knowledge and skills, were identified as the major barriers that constrained the adoption process. From the perspective of Rogers' Diffusion of Innovation Theory, the development of rice husk-based bioenergy is influenced by the interaction between local resource availability, farmers' human capacity, institutional support, and access to appropriate technology. This study contributes to the literature by demonstrating that successful bioenergy innovation requires an integrated innovation ecosystem involving farmers, agricultural extension agents, local governments, and higher education institutions through continuous capacity building, technology transfer, technical assistance, and supportive public policies. Strengthening these components is essential for accelerating innovation adoption and promoting sustainable agricultural waste management in rural communities.

Abstract

The successful adoption of agricultural innovations is determined not only by the superiority of the technology itself but also by the social system that shapes the innovation adoption process within farming communities. The Linear Trap Barrier System is an environmentally friendly and effective technology for controlling rice field rat infestations; however, its adoption among farmers remains relatively limited. This study aimed to analyze the role of the community's social system in the diffusion of LTBS innovation for rat pest management in lowland rice farming in Atolanu Village, Lambandia District, East Kolaka Regency, Indonesia. A qualitative approach with a descriptive research design was employed. Informants were selected using the snowball sampling technique and included rice farmers, farmer group leaders, agricultural extension officers, and community leaders involved in the introduction and implementation of LTBS. Data were collected through field observations, in-depth interviews, documentation, and literature review, and were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and SaldaƱa, consisting of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The findings revealed that the social system plays a pivotal role in shaping the diffusion of LTBS innovation through three interrelated dimensions: social structure, social norms, and opinion leaders. The social structure indicated that informal relationships among farmers exerted a greater influence than formal farmer organizations in fostering trust toward the innovation. Social norms showed that the absence of collective regulations regarding LTBS implementation, together with a prevailing culture of awaiting empirical evidence before adopting new practices, contributed to the gradual diffusion of the innovation. Furthermore, village heads, farmer group leaders, agricultural extension officers, and pioneering farmers functioned as opinion leaders by strengthening farmers' confidence through exemplary practices and direct experience. Strengthening the social system through trust-based networks, social learning, and local leadership is therefore considered an effective strategy for accelerating the diffusion of LTBS innovation and promoting the sustainability of rat pest management in lowland rice farming.

Abstract

Rats have been identified as a significant threat to rice productivity in Indonesia, including in Sendang Mulya Sari Village in the Tongauna Subdistrict of Konawe Regency, a region that is a major producer of rice. The objective of this study is to analyze the manufacturing process, steps for use, characteristics of innovation, and effectiveness of the Anti-Rat Net as an alternative for controlling rats in rice fields. The research was conducted using a qualitative approach through a purposive study in Sendang Mulya Sari Village, involving 18 informants who were purposively selected from 11 rice farming groups. The research concentrated on the methodologies for fabricating and utilizing the Anti-Rat Net, emphasizing its innovative attributes. The findings indicated that the Anti-Rat Net exhibited a substantial capacity to curtail the severity of rat pest incursions, accompanied by a notable capture success rate and a comparatively low operational cost efficiency when benchmarked against established methodologies. The Anti-Rat Net innovation is characterized by its adaptability to farmers' needs and ease of application. The present study corroborates the hypothesis that the Anti-Rat Net can function as an effective solution for sustainable rat pest control.

Abstract

The efficacy of agricultural extension programs in the Andoolo Subdistrict remains constrained by numerous challenges, including suboptimal program planning that does not adequately align with farmers' needs and regional potential. This suboptimal planning is attributable to limited competencies, the dynamics of extension tasks, and the phenomenon of extension workers changing professions. Consequently, the effectiveness of agricultural extension implementation at the field level is also diminished. The objective of this study is to ascertain the extent of the performance of agricultural extension workers in the development of programs in Andoolo Subdistrict, South Konawe Regency. The present study employs a qualitative approach, utilizing a descriptive research design. The selection of informants was deliberate. The objective of this study is to assess the performance level of agricultural extension workers in the development of agricultural extension programs. The analysis was conducted in a descriptive manner, employing a combination of qualitative and quantitative methodologies. The findings indicate that the performance of agricultural extension workers in developing agricultural extension programs in Andoolo Subdistrict, South Konawe Regency, is satisfactory, with an average NPK score of 88.08. Extension workers have been able to carry out most of the stages of program development systematically, particularly in the stages of program refinement and approval, which reached the very good category. Nonetheless, there is still room for improvement in the stages of determining activity plans and planning monitoring and evaluation methods. These methods should be more closely aligned with the objectives and problems faced by farmers.

Abstract

The utilization of rice husk waste as an alternative bioenergy source is an innovative approach that has the potential to support environmentally friendly energy production while increasing the added value of agricultural waste. However, farmers' acceptance of this innovation is largely influenced by their perceptions of its characteristics. This study aimed to analyze farmers' responses to the innovation of utilizing rice husk as an alternative bioenergy source among members of the Sido Makmur Farmer Group in Ambopi Village, Tongauna Utara District, Konawe Regency. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach supported by simple quantitative data. All 17 members of the Sido Makmur Farmer Group were selected as informants using a census technique. Data were collected through observation, structured interviews, and documentation. Data were analyzed using the interactive model developed by Miles and Huberman, which consists of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Farmers' responses were examined based on Rogers' five perceived characteristics of innovation, namely relative advantage, compatibility, complexity, trialability, and observability. The findings revealed that farmers showed positive responses toward the innovation of utilizing rice husk as an alternative bioenergy source. The innovation was perceived to reduce dependence on conventional energy sources, enhance the utilization of rice husk waste that had previously been considered to have little economic value, and provide a more environmentally friendly alternative energy source. In terms of compatibility, the innovation was considered appropriate for the local economic, socio-cultural, and environmental conditions because it utilizes abundant locally available raw materials. The perceived complexity of the innovation was relatively low since the required tools and materials were readily available and the production process was simple, although farmers' age and heavy daily workloads remained constraints for some respondents. Furthermore, the innovation could be easily tested on a small scale, and its benefits were readily observable, thereby strengthening farmers' confidence in accepting the innovation. The study concludes that the perceived characteristics of innovation, including relative advantage, compatibility with farmers' needs, ease of understanding, trialability, and observability, are the primary factors that foster positive farmer responses toward the utilization of rice husk as an alternative bioenergy source and have the potential to accelerate the adoption of this innovation in rural communities.
