Abstract

Bilingual information has an important role in bridging communication from one language to another, and this also happens in the tourism field. Currently, the Indonesian government is making tourism as one of the primary sectors in increasing state income. Since there is the importance of bilingual information, this research proposes to examine the quality of the translation of the bilingual information boards at Museum Sandi and describe the relationship between category shifts and the quality of the degree of equivalence meaning. The research employed a qualitative descriptive method in discussing the types of category shifts and the degree of quality equivalence meaning on the bilingual information board. This research classified types of category shift and meaning equivalence of translation found in the translated text into the columns and presented the data in the form of numbers and percentages. This research shows that the category shift occurring in bilingual information boards at Museum Sandi Yogyakarta is still relevant and understandable for foreign tourists.

Abstract

This research analyzes the slang word types used by Nicki Minaj in her songs “Seeing Green” and "Fractions". Thus, it covers two objectives: the types and meanings of the slang words in the song lyrics. This research study uses a descriptive qualitative method. Therefore, the unit of analysis is words or phrases containing slang. The main instrument of the research is the researcher herself by applying the theory slang types by Allan and Burridge (2006) and the theory kinds of meaning by Leech (1974). The findings of this research show that there are 69 data slang words in Nicki Minaj’s songs "Seeing Green" and "Fractions". The analysis findings of the types of slang words show that it can be concluded that the highest data is Imitative with 28 data (40.57%), followed by Fresh and Creative with 18 data (26.08%), and also Flippant with 18 data (26.08%). Besides Flippant, there is Clipping with 4 data (5.79%) and Acronym with 1 data (1.44%). Furthermore, the analysis findings of the meaning types of slang words show that it can be concluded that the highest meaning is Stylistic Meaning with 32 data (46.47%), followed by Reflective Meaning with 19 data 27.53%, Affective Meaning with 14 Data 27.53%, Connotative Meaning with 2 data (2.89%), and followed by Collocative Meaning with 2 data (2.89%). Conceptual meaning and thematic meanings are not found in the songs. Thus, only 5 kinds of meaning are found in Minaj’s songs “Seeing Green” and “Fractions”.

Abstract

This research analyzes Nadiem Anwar Makarim’s speech at the Singapore Summit 2020, aiming to distinguish the types of assertive speech acts and to comprehend their functions with the focus on the context. This research employs descriptive quasi or mixed-method. The qualitative method is used to explain the data, while the quantitative method is used to count the percentage of the data. The findings show that there are 139 assertive utterances used by Makarim. The analysis shows that there are five types of assertive speech act found. They are 28 of 20,14% of stating, 22 of 15,82% of claiming, 54 of 38,84% of reporting, 14 or 10,07% of reminding, and 21 or 15,10% of suggesting. Each type has its function. Reporting is to give information to the hearers, stating is to commit the hearers about the fact and truth, claiming is to say that something is true when some people may say that it is not true, suggesting is to give an opinion to the hearers, and reminding is to remind the hearers not to forget the condition. It is because the way Makarim delivered his speech refers to politeness. After reading this research, it is expected that the readers can realize the language phenomenon, especially speech acts and assertive types in a speech which eventually improves the understanding of filtering an utterance.

Abstract

This research discusses the code mixing used in the Instagram caption by students English Literature Study Program at Universitas Respati Yogyakarta. This research aims to find the types of code mixing used in Instagram captions and to understand the factors using code mixing in captions. The focus analysis of this research is by analyzing the context. This research was conducted by implementing a descriptive qualitative method in discussing code-mixing. A simple quantitative method is implemented to assist the qualitative method in explaining the data in the form of numbers or percentages. The findings of this research show that there are 70 code-mixing data found in Instagram captions. The analysis findings show that there are three types of code mixing found in Instagram captions. Those are code-mixing insertion, alternation and congruent lexicalization. From the results of the analysis in this research, the type of insertion is the type that is the highest or most commonly found, that is 54 data (59.1%). Then alternation type with 12 data (17.1%), and congruent lexicalization type with 4 data (5.71%). and for the results of the second question in this research, there are 60 data (85.71%) for the first factor talking about a particular topic, the second factor is being emphatic about something with 4 data (5.71%), the third factor is repetition used for clarification with 4 data (5.71%) and 2 data (4, 28) for the expressing group identity.

Abstract

The directive speech act refers to the utterance used by the speaker to ask and tell the speech partner to act. Therefore, speech and actions created through the phenomenon of directive speech acts can be found in human communication and language speech, such as in real life and movies. It can be seen through one of the movies such as The Addams Family 2. The Addams Family 2 is a movie that has many directive speech acts that occur in the script. The purpose of this research is to understand the classification of directive speech acts and understand why directive speech acts in the form of types and functions are used in The Addams Family 2 movie script. The researcher used a descriptive qualitative method in explaining the overall types and functions of directive speech acts on the data in the object of research. The analyzed movie is obtained from Apple TV (iTunes Channel) and the movie script comes from https://scrapsfromtheloft.com/movies/the-addams-family-2-transcript. The Addams Family 2 because when the characters have a conversation there are utterances that have the types of asking, commanding, offering, inviting, advising, prohibiting, encouraging, competitive, convivial, collaborative, and conflictive. The theory used in analyzing this research is the type of directive speech acts by Austin and Searle's theory as well as the function of speech acts by Leech's theory. The directive speech act of asking is the highest data which amounted to 84 data (49.41%). Each character's utterance ensures that the interlocutor can provide answers and information in accordance with the questions given because the speaker asks questions to speech partners to get answers and information. Based on the data analysis, the competitive directive speech act function is the highest data with 124 (72.94%). This is because the competitive aspect arises when there is competition between speakers and speech partners regarding how actions or requests should be made. However, the speech partner may have a desire that is contrary to the wishes of the speaker.
