Abstract

Background: Para-sport, as a branch of sports for individuals with disabilities, has grown significantly as a platform for social inclusion and athletic achievement. However, sports activities inherently carry injury risks, which are amplified in para-sport due to physical limitations and adaptive equipment use. Methods: This study systematically reviewed injury patterns across various para-sport disciplines in multi-event competitions. Using the PRISMA framework, we analyzed 13 studies published in the last decade. Results: Results indicate that contact sports such as wheelchair basketball and rugby reported the highest injury prevalence, primarily acute injuries like shoulder dislocations and contusions. Non-contact sports such as para-swimming and para-throwing showed chronic injuries like tendinopathies due to repetitive movements. Key risk factors included biomechanical imbalances, intense training, and the use of adaptive devices. Conclusions The findings highlight the need for tailored injury prevention strategies, including biomechanical evaluation, rehabilitation programs, and ergonomic sports equipment design, to ensure athlete safety and enhance performance sustainability in para-sports.

Abstract

The ASEAN Paragames Cambodia 2023 was attended by 268 Indonesian paralympic athletes, the largest number compared to the Tokyo 2020 International Paralympic Games with 23 Indonesian paralympic athletes. Paralympic athletes have a higher prevalence of injuries compared to Olympic athletes. Injuries in paralympic sports vary due to the large percentage of disability. However, there is no literature that specifically describes the frequency and percentage of sports injuries in the categories and areas of sports injuries in the region and physiotherapy services in Indonesian paralympic athletes.  The method used was a retrospective descriptive epidemiological study with a cross-sectional approach. This method aims to determine the frequency and percentage of sports injuries in sports categories and affected anatomical areas and types of physiotherapy services in a population at one time without making comparisons or connecting between variables. The sports category of Indonesian Paralympic athletes with the highest number and percentage of injuries was Para Athletics (n=57.35.2%). In the category of the area anatomically affected by the injury, the highest number and percentage was the leg (n=36.22.2%). Physiotherapy services provided to paraathletes with the highest number and percentage was stretching (n=77.19.2%).  The high frequency of sports injuries in paralympic athletes indicates that more prevention needs to be done in the future, injuries that occur in paralympic athletes can aggravate existing disabilities and can even interfere with the athlete's ability to carry out daily activities, therefore physiotherapy services are needed to support the handling of injuries in paralympic athletes during competition.

Abstract

Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) is a chronic neuropathic pain complication following herpes zoster infection. PHN often leads to persistent pain and facial muscle dysfunction, affecting patients' quality of life. This study aimed to evaluate the physiotherapy management using electrical stimulation and facial exercises in a case of facial PHN. A case report design was used to observe a 36-year-old male patient presenting with facial pain and muscle weakness after herpes zoster infection. The physiotherapy intervention, consisting of electrical stimulation and facial exercises, was conducted over three sessions within two weeks. Assessment tools included NPRS, MMT, and Ugo Fisch Scale. There was a significant reduction in pain from NPRS 5/10 to 0, and improvement in frontal muscle strength from MMT 0 to 3. The Ugo Fisch score increased from 62 to 66, indicating functional improvement of facial muscles, though not yet optimal. Electrical stimulation and facial exercises were effective in reducing pain and improving facial muscle function in a PHN patient. Further research with larger samples is needed to validate these findings.
