Abstract

Currently, there are many programs from the government related to urban villages. One of them is Kampung Kota Baru Tengah in Balikpapan City, which is the location for the Community-Based Settlement Environmental Management program (KOTAKU Program). The socialization program is carried out with an approach to the informal community. Socialization through community media is the mainstay of the government so that existing programs can be realized properly in society. This study aims to see the similarity of perceptions regarding space as a place to live. Considering that a common perception is one of the first steps to achieving the success of the KOTAKU program, where a common perception of where to live will become the vision of development in residential areas so that people will be more consistent in implementing the KOTAKU program. This study uses Multidimensional Scaling (MDS) analysis, which will then map the perceptions of settlements. The results of the perception mapping formed show that individuals in each community have different perceptions of settlements. Based on perceptions of reconciliation grouping, we found that 51% chose identity as the main reason for staying and 48.5% chose location dependence as the main reason for staying. This perception formed in the community suggests that government strategies for environmental and housing improvement programs are advocated to reflect or strengthen people's sense of identity and place dependability. Strengthening this sense of identity can be linked to any development activity that can reflect local wisdom, while the location dependency aspect can be linked to improving settlement infrastructure.

Abstract

Traditional markets serve as central hubs of community economic activity and play a vital role in meeting daily basic needs. However, the high intensity of interactions within these markets may increase the risk of disease transmission, particularly when environmental sanitation is inadequately managed. This study aims to analyze the current condition of sanitation facilities at Sanggam Adji Dilayas Market, Berau Regency, and to formulate recommendations for improvement toward achieving a healthy market in accordance with the provisions of the Indonesian Ministry of Health Regulation No. 17 of 2020. The research employed a descriptive analysis with a rationalistic approach. Recommendations were formulated using a triangulation method, involving direct observation and interviews based on six key sanitation indicators: provision of clean water, toilet facilities, waste management, drainage systems, handwashing facilities, and vector control. The findings reveal that the market has not yet met the criteria for a healthy market, with a feasibility score of 62%. The main issues identified include insufficient toilet facilities, damaged wastewater (black water) channels, suboptimal waste management systems, clogged drainage, the absence of a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), and the lack of handwashing facilities and vector control measures in strategic areas. Based on these results, eleven recommendations were proposed to enhance sanitation facilities, encompassing infrastructure improvements, waste separation and treatment, provision of a WWTP, and education on hygienic behavior. These improvements are expected to support the implementation of healthy market standards, enhance the comfort of both vendors and visitors, and contribute to the sustainable realization of a Healthy City in Berau Regency.

Abstract

The need for clean water is one of the essential aspects of community life, especially in areas that are not fully served by the PDAM (Regional Drinking Water Company) distribution network. In Sumber Rejo Subdistrict, particularly in RT 7, the availability of clean water remains a major issue due to the hilly topography, making it difficult for the PDAM pipeline network to reach the area. The local community relies on springs as an alternative water source, which is collected manually without a planned distribution system. This study aims to analyze the potential of the spring in RT 7, Sumber Rejo Subdistrict, as a clean water source based on water quality, flow rate classification, and clean water distribution system planning. The methods used include water quality analysis through laboratory tests covering physical, chemical, and microbiological parameters, flow rate classification based on spring discharge measurements, and distribution system planning using EPANET 2.2 software. The results show that the spring water quality does not fully meet the clean water quality standards according to the Indonesian Ministry of Health Regulation Number 2 of 2023 on Environmental Health, particularly for nitrate, manganese, and aluminum parameters. Based on the flow rate measurements, the spring falls into Class VI, with a flow rate ranging from 0.1 to 1 liter per second, indicating low flow capacity and generally only sufficient to meet water needs on a limited scale (less than 1,000 people). In the clean water distribution network simulation, three alternative distribution scenarios were evaluated, with Alternative 2 showing the most optimal results, with flow velocities ranging from 0.31 to 0.46 m/s

Abstract

The problem of organic waste management in Balikpapan City is increasing, with a total of 193,038 tons/year, 70.3% of which comes from household waste. One solution implemented at Manggar Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Landfill in Balikpapan is the processing of organic waste using maggots (BSF larvae). This study aims to analyze the current conditions, analyze the factors influencing waste processing, and formulate strategies for optimizing the processing facility. The methods used include quantitative and qualitative approaches, as well as best practice analysis as a basis for improvement. The research findings highlight several issues, such as the absence of BSF egg weighing, predator disturbances in the fly cages, biopon systems without drainage channels, and the manual process of separating maggots from casings. Optimization was carried out through the redesign of the BSF fly enclosure, improvement, and addition of 21 biopon units, which can produce 35.7 liters of liquid organic fertilizer (POC) and decompose 1,0878 tons of organic waste per cycle, the design of a sieving machine, and the reorganization of the maggot house layout. These efforts are expected to enhance processing efficiency and capacity to 1,0878 tons per cycle, supporting more sustainable and environmentally friendly waste management.

Abstract

Population growth that is not balanced with adequate environmental management can hurt environmental quality. The Somber Hulu River is one of the rivers located in the North Balikpapan District. Some people living around the river directly discharge liquid waste into the river, potentially causing pollution that can disrupt the river ecosystem. One sign of pollution in the Somber Hulu River is characterized by smelly and cloudy river water. The research began by determining the river water sampling point, and then the water samples were tested to determine the pollutant concentration based on the specified parameters. The next stage was determining the water quality status using the Pollution Index (IP) method. The reference water quality standard used the class II river water quality standard based on Government Regulation number 22 of 2021. The purpose of this study was to determine the water quality status in the Somber Hulu River as a basis for decision-making in planning control measures to improve surface water quality. Based on the results of the measurements carried out, it is known that in general the water quality of the Somber Hulu River is moderately polluted with an IP value of 3.87 and lightly polluted with an IP value of 7.05 at point 2, an IP value of 5.37 at point 3, and an IP value of 5.25 at point 4. There needs to be management and control of water pollution sources, such as optimizing the use of septic tanks, carrying out monitoring activities, conducting routine river water quality monitoring, and encouraging community involvement in sustainable river management.
