Abstract

The community service programme was conducted in the form of a training on Basic English for teachers of SMA Bopkri 1 Yogyakarta. The training was conducted online through the Zoom platform and offline at the school. It was divided into ten sessions in the course of two months from 17 February 2022 up to 21 April 2022. Fifteen teachers participated in the training. The materials were understanding sermons, greetings and introduction, describing school facilities, doing school tours, describing school culture, hospitality, entertaining guests, doing small talks, and celebration of learning. The training was conducted in response to the need of the school to improve the English skills of the participants as the school had biweekly English sermons and the probability of having foreign guests. Generally, the training was a success and most of the participants who were adult learners and senior teachers with decades of teaching experiences demonstrated high motivation to learn despite the challenges. The use of three languages: Indonesian, Javanese, and English and the minimum use of technological tools were found to positively affect the participants’ motivation and learning in general. Flexibility in instructional process and relevance of materials were also key factors for success.

Abstract

The article reports a community service programme in the form of the English Conversation Club (ECC) for students of Kalam Kudus Senior High School, Surakarta, Central Java. It was conducted in the form of eight 40-50-minute online sessions via Google Meet from January 2022 up to May 2022. 30 students participated in the programme. The programme was mainly designed to introduce the participants to varieties of English such as Tagalog, Korean, Japanese, Australian, and Singaporean Englishes and to describe various places in Indonesia or abroad. Introducing varieties of English, more specifically, was intended to nurture positive attitudes towards varieties of English around the world and local accents with speaking English, including Indonesian accents, which in turn could motivate them to speak English confidently regardless of their accents. The participants reported generally positive attitudes towards the programme even though some participants still saw little relevance as to why they should learn varieties of English other than British and American. This slightly negative attitude may be attributed to the participants' limited previous exposure to varieties of English. The combination of limited duration, a big number of participants, and the online mode of the programme may also lessen the effectiveness and how well the materials on varieties of Englishes were delivered. Based on the limitations, it is suggested that to be more effective, future programmes were designed considering more carefully the duration of each meeting, the number of participants, as well as the participants' level of proficiency and previous background knowledge.

Abstract

This community service programme was conducted in the form of an English communication empowerment programme for employees of OHANA, a disability rights organisation based in Yogyakarta. The programme consisted of ten 90-minute meetings conducted from early October 2022 up to mid-November 2022. The materials of this training included self-introduction, introducing others, making small talks with a wide range of topics, as well as job descriptions and job responsibilities. The programme was conducted in response to the need for OHANA employees to make more effective communications with foreign partners concerning their jobs as advocates of the rights of women and persons with disability. Despite the low attendance rate in some of the meetings due to the tight schedules of the OHANA employees in providing services to the community, the language empowerment programme can be considered successful seen from the engagement of the attending participants and the generally positive feedback from them. Several conclusions and recommendations are stated considering the degree of success of this programme for the betterment of future similar programmes.

Abstract

English as a lingua franca (ELF) has gained its global significance as the working tongue of the many. This case study was conducted with the aim of investigating students’ attitudes and teachers’ views toward ELF. Through questionnaire and interview, it involved 69 students and 2 English teachers at a senior high school in Indonesia as the participants. Based on the questionnaire results, it was found that the students generally had positive attitudes toward ELF. However, they tended to favor inner-circle Englishes over other varieties. Based on the interview results, the teachers also showed positive views toward ELF. Moreover, they viewed that learning various English varieties was important for the students. They also thought that the use of L1 and L2 in the classroom was needed. Despite their positive views, the teachers were still not really familiar with ELF as a concept and demonstrated different views of native speakerism. In general, there was not much dissimilarity between the high school students’ attitudes and teachers’ views toward ELF. It seems to suggest that the teachers’ views might have played a role in shaping the students’ attitudes toward ELF and, therefore, the students’ attitudes to some degree mirrored the views of their teachers.
