Abstract

The construction of traditional gender roles has affected the understanding of being feminine and masculine. This understanding seems to influence gender performance in the film Mrs. Doubtfire. This onehourandfiftysevenminute film was directed by Chris Columbus. This study is conducted to examine how gender performativity is illustrated in the film and what ideology lies within the film. Queer theory, especially gender performativity by Judith Butler is used as the framework of the study. The study is done by observing and analysing chosen scenes from the film focusing on the performance of Daniel Hillard as Euphegenia Doubtfire. Narrative aspect of the film is not only the main concern; the nonnarrative is also part of the analysis especially on costume, makeup, performance and color. The main finding of this study is this film in one hand celebrates traditional gender roles but on the other hand promotes gender as performance. Femininity is pictured as fluid. Therefore, it is also a performativity. The contestation between those two opposing ideas is smoothly wrapped through amusing film such as Mrs. Doubtfire. KataKata Kunci: konstruksi gender; performativitas gende; teori queer

Abstract

Coral fish groups have a very strong dependence on coral reef ecosystems. Nusa Manggala Expedition was carried out for twenty days to explore basic data on the diversity of species of coral reef fish in the Liki, Bepondi, and Miossu Islands. Assessment of coral fish assemblages using Underwater Visual Census (UVC). Four hundred and thirty-two species of fifty families of reef fishes found during the 2nd session the Nusa Manggala expedition in Liki, Bepondi, and Miossu islands, northern Papua. Four species (Mobula tarapacana, M. alfredi, Oxymonacanthus longirostris, Bolbometopon muricatum, and Plectropomus areolatus) and one species (Cheilinus undulatus) categorized of IUCN as Vulnerable (VU) and Endangered (EN), respectively, were recorded in this study. There is unique pattern of reef fishes’ composition in small outer islands location in pristine location that shows Pomacentridae and Labridae were almost in the same number as Gobiidae, Apogonidae, Serranidae, Chaetodontidae, and Acanthuridae. In addition, the results showed that the Liki and Miossu islands and Bepondi Island included at the Coral Fish Diversity Index (CFDI) as an extraordinary and excellent category of marine fish, respectively. The results of the expedition showed that the Liki Islands and Miossu Island had an extraordinary category of marine fish, and Bepondi Island had an excellent category of sea fish. The culture of local people in Papua called "Sasi" prove to provide full protection to the ecosystem and have a positive impact on high diversity of reef fishes.

Abstract

Teaching Eenglish as a foreign language in Indonesia had been a challenge. In the national curriculum, there is an idea to insert sociocultural aspect of Indonesia in the form of folklore into English language teaching (ELT). The researchers saw that Kepulauan Riau (Kepri) has many cultural entities, one of them is folklore. This study is to promote Jangoi, a coastal folklore story which has been uttered from generation to generation in Kepri, specifically in Penyengat Island, as a material to teach English. The research questions of this study are; how Jangoi become ELT materials, how were the students’ performances upon Jangoi, and how English teachers’ opinion about Jangoi. This study used R and D (research and development), that consists of four steps, that are 1) analysis and consideration upon student needs and context, (2) design and development the purposive work lesson; (3) implementation step, implementing Jangoi story in ELT, and (4) Evaluation. The result of this study are, Jangoi is needed to be processed before applied in ELT, by practicing the three steps, that are transliteration, Indonesia-English translation, and Translation-Validation. Students’performance upon Jangoi was good, it could be viewed from sets of multiple choice test and essay questions, and English teachers pointed that Jangoi can be applied in ELT.

Abstract

Highlight ResearchAfter bleaching disturbance and Acanthaster planci outbreaks, herbivore fishes species were dominated in MRP PiehThis explains the marine recreational activities in utilization zone MRP Pieh have no impact on reducing fish biomassAfter disturbance in MRP Pieh shows the coral reef fishes still endurance on bleaching event, and Acanthaster planci outbreak after disturbance in MRP Pieh shows the coral reef fishes still endurance on bleaching event and Acanthaster planci outbreak. However, the composition of corallivorous has decreased but has been an increase in herbivorous and carnivorous fish populationsAbstractPieh MRP encountered non-anthropogenic phenomena, precisely massive coral bleaching in 2016, 2017, and massive predators from Acanthaster planci outbreaks in 2018. This study aimed to understand the pattern of coral reef diversity in the core zone and utilization in the MRP area and compare it to non-MRPS locations that accept the same non-anthropogenic pressure conditions. Coral fish sampling using a UVC is categorized into three zones: the core zone, the utilization zone, and outside the MRP area. 8 Families of coral reef fishes were counted based on categories of level function in ecologies and economy. Taxonomic distinctiveness estimates were calculated mathematically for each sample, including species richness and taxonomic diversity were compared among zonation area. Pearson's Coefficient Correlation Matrix was used to measure the correlation relationship between zonation areas. There are 91 species of fish and 3002 individuals found. The richest family in the MRP Core Zone and MRP Utility Zone was Acanthuridae with 20 species and non-MRP has a lower species richness and abundance of fish communities. The dominant species in Pieh MRP was Ctenochaetus striatus with average abundant per site (21.3 ± 7.62, n = 3). Acanthuridae represents 55.98% of the total biomass in MRP-Core Zone, 63.13% in MRP-Utility Zone, and 41.55% in Non-MRP Area. This study showed the number of species and populations from corallivores fishes have decreased but has been an increase in herbivorous and carnivore diversity. The diversity indices (H') and ENS also shows no differ significantly between zonation.

Abstract

This study investigates and describes English literature students’ pragmatic knowledge in uttering English refusal statements in different situations (request, invitation, suggestion, offering). The purpose of this study is to analyze and describe students’ refusal strategy and politeness strategy while uttering English refusal. The participants in this study consisted of twenty-five undergraduate students, 7 males and 18 females, enrolled in the second and sixth semesters of the English literature department of Diponegoro University. The only instrument used by researchers in this study was a questionnaire based on Beebe et al.’s (1990) work. The result showed that the students use direct and indirect refusal strategies to refuse something. Most students prefer a direct refusal strategy to the interlocutors who are their peers (friends) or subordinates. However, some students (higher semester) prefer indirect strategies with their peers in some situations. It means that the students respect their interlocutor even though they are in a higher position. Moreover, in the politeness strategy, they use two types of strategies which are deference and solidarity politeness strategy. However, the students (higher semester) prefer to use the deference politeness strategy.
