Abstract

The story of the Pandawas and their wife in Wirata was used as the plot of the geguritan Kicakawhich was initially transformed from Wirataparwa in the form of Parwa. The only episode which was transformed into geguritan written in the Balinese language is the one narrating when the Pandawas were in disguise for one year. In this episode the love story of their wife, Drupadi, who was disguised as Sairindriis also narrated. In this episode it is also narrated that the Chief Minister, Kicaka, would like to have her as his wife. However, the Chief Minister, Kicaka, was killed by Bima, who was disguised as Ballawa, meaning that the love story came to an end. From the language point of view, the episode telling that the Pandawas were in Wirata was transformed into Geguritan Kicaka written in the Balinese language. In addition, although the text was dynamically translated, many Old Javanese words are still used in the Balinese version.Similarly, geguritan Sarpayajaya adopted the episode of Sarpayajnya of Adiparwa; however, the plot was modified again using thestrophes pangkur, dangdanggula, sinom and durma and was introduced using the Balinese language. It is narrated that King Parikesit was bitten and killed by a snake named Taksaka. Consequently, his son, Janamejaya, performed a ritual known as Sarpayajaya, causing all the snakes to die. From the cultural point of view, the text is recited as part of the performing art and the art of music ‘magegitan’ in Bali. The text Sarpayajayaisrecited as part of the cremation ceremony ‘ngaben’ known as mamutru.

Abstract

Usada Budha Kacapi (abbreviated to UBK) text, which contains the basic Balinese traditional therapy, is a text which is in the form of narration. The Balinese traditional therapy (usada) texts generally contain collections of names of diseases, medicinal substances, and how to cure such diseases; however, the UBK is in the form of narration, containing characters, setting, themes, and literary language. The UBK text, after being edited, is recorded in a number of palm-leaf manuscripts. The title is the same but the content varies. Budha Kecapi is the main character, which has inspired many other writers; therefore, the works produced still use the same language units as used by Budha Kacapi. Such works are Budha Kacapi Cemeng, Budha Kacapi Putih, and Budha Kacapi Sastrasanga . It is this which has inspired the researcher to explore the UBK in order to know who and what Budha Kacapi is. In order to be able to identify the message transmitted to the reader or the community, and its totality, it is necessary to know, understand, and analyze the signs it contains. Therefore, two theories are used in this study; they are the theory of intertextuality and the theory of semiotics. The results of analysis show that the writers wish to teach and guide those who desire to be professional indigenous medical practitioners ‘dukun’, namely, the ones who are highly knowledgeable of traditional therapy, ethical and not easily defeated by diseases. That, according to Budha Kacapi, can be achieved through ‘yogasastra’. The indigenous medical practitioners should improve their quality through yoga (meditation) and aksara suci (holy scripts) as the means. A set of learning materials related to the basic knowledge needed by the indigenous medical practitioners are systematically organized, starting from how to recruit the prospective learners, the learning method, how to diagnose (nenger), the philosophy of life and death, the philosophy of diseases, the concept of being healthy and sick, the compensation, types of diseases, and how to cure diseases. As a whole, the UBK text contains the basic and advanced levels of learning materials for indigenous medical practitioners. The advanced level means that if they study the UBK text and are able to apply it properly, they will not by all means be defeated by diseases.

Abstract

The Moslem society has lived in Bali since the 14th century during the reign of Dalem Waturenggong. They have been as the minority community within the Balinese society. Among the Islamic-Balinese literary works are the Kidung of Rumaksa ing wengi, Geguritan Amad Muhammad, Geguritan Siti Badariah, and Aji Pangukiran. Another text, which is found later, is Usada Manak. This text is about Balinese traditional treatment for illness in Bali. It contains the treatment which is related to reproduction. The analysis of this text showed that this text is a result of the syncretism between Hindu and Islam in that the holy mantra of the supreme God. Om, is compiled and made parallel with the word Allah. The opening sentence of the text which expresses the request for safety, Om Awighnamastu nama siddam is made  parallel with  Bismillah irahman irahim. This syncretism showed that Moslem community is accepted by the majority of Balinese community. This indicates that  there has been a mutual understanding between Moslem and Hindu in Bali. Both share resemblances in divine philosophy with different expressions. It is functionally also believed that the God will give his blessing for all human beings and all sickness can be cured because of his blessing.

Abstract

Kakawin Ananda Bhuwana is an Old Javanese literary work that describes a character's journey in search of happiness (metta). The creativity and imaginative power of the author in compiling the story and giving the title to this literary work is a unique and special attraction. The theory used is the discourse theory proposed by Van Dijk. The analysis results of Kakawin Ananda Bhuwana's text show Kakawin Ananda Bhuwana as a constructor of metta discourse formed from a formal structure consisting of a macrostructure, a superstructure, and a microstructure.

This research examines the Satua (story) of I Glijah. This elder tells the story of a people who come into conflict with a king who likes to oppress the people. The people succeeded in killing the king in various ways. Finally the people were appointed to be the new king. This study uses Van Dijk's critical discourse analysis theory. This research will look at the form of treason, and its context. As a result, this story depicted a hidden form of treason with the king.
