English for Young Learners: Identifying Students’ Interest and Motivation in Learning English at Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Zahratul Idami

This research was conducted to identify the interest in learning English of madrasah ibtidaiyah students in Bireuen Regency, Aceh in general as well as interest in each English skill. In addition, this study also identified students' motivation to learn English. Besides, to identify the obstacles faced by madrasah ibtidaiyah students in Bireuen Regency and to know how their opportunity was in learning English were also the aims of this study. This research was a qualitative descriptive research using observations, interviews, documents, and questionnaires to collect data. The subjects in this study were 30 students of madrasah ibtidaiyah spread across Bireuen Regency. The results of this study indicated that students of madrasah ibtidaiyah in Bireuen Regency had a very high interest in learning English in general. In each skill, students' interests from the highest were listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Meanwhile, students also had high motivation in learning English. On the other hand, the results of this study also showed that although students faced obstacles in the form of limited textbooks and the difficulty in memorizing English vocabulary, they had very high opportunities in this subject.

This study examines the complex phonological shifts within the Mewati language, focusing on the transformation of the alveolar lateral sound between two vowels into an alveolar tap/flap. Using Optimality Theory (OT), our primary goal is to uncover the underlying process responsible for this phonological alteration. Fieldwork, in-depth interviews, and audio recordings were used to acquire extensive data. Together, these three data sources contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the phonological alteration under investigation. In summary, fieldwork provides the context, in-depth interviews offer insights into speakers perspectives, and audio recordings supply the raw phonetic data. The research field was Haryanas District Mewat, where we engaged a diverse group of fifty informants, including youth, adults, and the elderly. Mewati, a language native to Haryanas Mewat district exhibits a striking pattern. Our findings revealed that Mewati speakers relinquished the identity of the alveolar lateral sound if it did not occur between two adjacent vowels. These linguistic constraints serve as crucial determinants in evaluating potential output candidates, aligning them with the ranking features of input candidates in the framework of OT. The data collected from the heart of Mewat unequivocally confirms the presence of a phonological alteration process within the linguistic landscape of this region.

Healthy and clean environment is something that must be initiated for the survival of future generations so that it is not threatened by the consequences of irresponsible human behaviour. This community service is inspired by the lack of students’ awareness in maintaining environmental cleanliness and the lack of cleaning facilities at MTs MIM Langsa. The procedure of this assisting activity is carried out through 3 stages, namely: planning, implementing, and reflecting, which begins with field observation to the target school. This potential-based community service activity is in the form of counseling/socialization and mentoring on school environmental hygiene. Socialization activities targeting OSIM administrators of MTs MIM Langsa as role models are expected to motivate other students to always maintain school cleanliness. Meanwhile, other activities include painting garbage cans and providing posters with the theme of environmental cleanliness. The provision of cleaning facilities in the form of garbage cans in several places in the school environment has received positive responses and support from the school community, one of which is showed by students who responsibly do class pickets and do not litter.

The Community Service Programme carried out by lecturers and students of the English Language Education Study Programme, Tarbiyah and Teacher Training Faculty of IAIN Langsa aimed to improve the English language skills of the community in the environment around the campus. This activity is carried out in the form of training to find the needs of the participants. In this activity, the intended participants were students of MTS Swasta An-Nur Kota Langsa grade VII that consisted of 11 students. The methods used in this activity included repetitive reading methods with a communicative approach through service-learning activities. The results of this programme showed a significant improvement in the critical reading skills of English narrative text as evidenced by the results of the score analysis with SPSS. The success of this programme not only has a positive impact on the participants, but also provides practical experience for students in applying English learning theory in the field, as well as strengthening the role of lecturers as community servants. The implementation of this programme reflects the institution's commitment to supporting sustainable educational development and contributing to improving the quality of human resources in the community.
