Abstract

This research examines errors in the use of particles in embedded clauses made by second semester students at the UDINUS Japanese Literature Study Program in the Writing Popular Japanese Articles class. The author considers that discussing this matter is very important considering that the ability to understand this embedded clause will be applied to the ability to speak, write, read and also translate. Apart from that, the ability to understand embedded clauses will support success in working on Reading questions on the Japanese JLPT test. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with a syntactic approach and interpretative techniques. The mistake students generally make is that it is still difficult to understand the use of the "ga" particle as a subject marker in embedded clauses. This research uses a qualitative descriptive analysis method with a syntactic approach and interpretative techniques.

Abstract

In Japanese society, the main concept in communicating is to consider the other person's feelings by not speaking directly, too frankly or to the point.  One of the grammatical features this concept is Verb ~omoimasu which means in English ~I think (I think…, I think….). In the result of the essays by the students who take the Japanese Popular Writing course. In his essay students should use these verbs which also function as hedges to express opinions or ideas but ignore them because they may not understand that the use of these functional verbs is to maintain language politeness, especially in communicating in Japanese. Seeing this phenomenon, the writers tried to find out by identifying student essays that do not use these hedges, and the possible causes. Then by adopting the concept of communicating in Japanese that considers the feelings of the other person, the writers have found out how the implications of using these hedges have on the values of politeness in language that have effect on the politeness of behavior of students who take Japanese Popular Article Writing lectures. With research that adopts the concept of communicating in Japanese society, the writers can create a language politeness learning model that is expected to influence behavioral aspects.

Abstract

The phenomenon of socio-cultural shifts in Indonesia in the digital era has become increasingly complex, particularly as Generation Z emerges as the main actor in the use of technology while simultaneously inheriting traditional values. This study aims to deeply understand the subjective experiences of Gen Z in integrating traditional values—such as mutual cooperation, politeness, and kinship—with digital cultural practices characterized by speed, individuality, and global connectivity. Using a phenomenological approach, this research explores how Indonesian Gen Z negotiates its social identity amid the dialectic between the continuity of local values and digital innovation. The findings reveal that traditional values still hold significant influence, accounting for approximately 45% to 55% in shaping digital interaction patterns, particularly in aspects of communication ethics, online community solidarity, and the expression of cultural identity on social media. Although digital culture presents challenges such as global homogenization and tendencies toward individualism, Gen Z tends to engage in a process of hybridization, adapting digital technologies without completely abandoning traditional roots. Thus, the social identity of Indonesian Gen Z is not constructed dichotomously but through dynamic interactions that produce new communication patterns while opening space for the reinterpretation of local values in a global context. This study underscores the importance of balancing digital modernity and traditional heritage in shaping the identity of the younger generation and contributes conceptually to the understanding of Indonesia's national identity amid the intensifying currents of globalization.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the personality of Kobayashi Makoto, the main character in Keiichi Hara’s Colorful (2010), using Paul T. Costa Jr. and Robert R. McCrae’s Big Five Personality (OCEAN) model. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method with observation and note-taking techniques. The findings reveal that three of Makoto’s personality dimensions, Openness to Experience, Conscientiousness, and Extraversion are dynamic and show positive development throughout the narrative. The Agreeableness dimension also exhibits minor improvement, reflected in Makoto’s gradual reduction of defensiveness and increased willingness to form healthier interpersonal connections. Meanwhile, the Neuroticism dimension remains relatively stagnant at a high level, indicating enduring emotional instability rooted in past trauma. These results suggest that Colorful portrays not only a spiritual journey but also the psychological process of adolescence in confronting emotional wounds, discovering life’s meaning, and rebuilding a sense of self and relational responsibility.
