Abstract

Seed priming by soaking in KNO3 has been used to enhance seed performance and crop establishment in tomatoes. However, seeds that are immersed in a solution for a long time may be deprived of oxygen during critical phases of imbibition. Aeration during priming is a solution to solve this problem. Thus, this study aims to determine the effect of aeration and KNO3 in seed priming on the germination of tomato seeds. The seeds used in this study were tomato seeds var. Palupi. This study used seven treatments i.e. non-primed, KNO3 moistened paper, KNO3 soaking, KNO3 aeration, water moistened paper, water soaking, and water aeration. The study was arranged in a completely randomized design (CRD). All data were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA and followed by means analysis using Fisher’s LSD (Least Significant Difference) test at P<0.05. The result showed that all priming treatments gave a better performance in FGP (Final Germination Percentage), MGT (Mean Germination Time), and GRI (Germination Rate Index) compared to the non-primed. The best treatments, however, were observed in the aeration method in either KNO3 or water in all parameters observed. KNO3 gave a slightly better performance than water in all parameters, although there was no statistical difference between the two treatments.

Abstract

Organic household waste accounts for a large portion of Indonesia's waste management problems, especially in the Jember Regency. To overcome this, innovations such as the composting bin are viable for home-scale application. However, this innovation is not widely known by the people. The purpose of this extension activity is to introduce the composting bin to the people of the Antirogo village, Jember district. The counseling method was in the form of a demonstration of handmade aerobic compost. This activity was well received by the community where several households have succeeded in assembling their compost bins.

Abstract

The -sh2, bt2, su1, and se- genes in sweet corn cause faster seed deterioration and a lower germination rate. A potential solution to this issue is seed priming. Priming agents and the solution uptake method are key factors that affect the achievement of seed priming. This study aims to compare the influence of solution uptake methods in sweet corn seed priming as well as investigate the effect of KNO3 on the germination and early development of sweet corn plants. The research was conducted in the Seed processing lab of the Department of Agricultural Production, Politeknik Negeri Jember. The seeds used in this study were sweet corn seeds var. Enno 1401. The study was designed with a completely randomized design (CRD). Seven treatments, namely non-primed, KNO3 spraying, KNO3 soaking, KNO3 aeration, RO water spraying, RO water soaking, and RO water aeration, were observed. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA, followed by means analysis using Fisher’s LSD (least significant difference) test at P<0.05. The result showed that aeration priming performed better than spraying and soaking in terms of germination percentage, MGT, and GRI of sweet corn seeds. However, aeration priming with KNO3 gave lower results than RO water in terms of MGT and GRI. On the other hand, aeration priming with KNO3 aeration gave the highest result in dry weight.

Abstract

The problem of water scarcity, especially during dry season often occurs in Indonesia. Urban activities such as irrigation for gardening are usually carried out in a wasteful manner. In addition, other problems such as household waste, especially plastic bottles, also need to be a concern. The purpose of this community service was to introduce a water saving irrigation namely drip irrigation sytem to to residents of the Villa Bougenville Indah housing estate, Antirogo sub-district, Sumbersari District, Jember Regency, East Java Province of Indonesia. A simple homemade drip irrigation device made from materials such as plastic bottles and infusion hoses was introduced to them through extension activities (direct home visits). This activity was positively responded by the residents. Some residents have succeeded in making and using drip irrigation in their homes. It is hoped that citizens' awareness and concern for the importance of saving air and maintaining environmental cleanliness can continue to increase.

Abstract

Pemanfaatan pupuk organik cair (POC) merupakan salah satu alternatif budidaya tanaman rumah tangga yang dapat mendukung pertanian perkotaan secara lebih ramah lingkungan. Namun, penggunaan POC di tingkat rumah tangga masih sering belum tepat, terutama terkait dosis, cara pengenceran, waktu aplikasi, serta sasaran aplikasi pada tanaman. Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan meningkatkan pengetahuan dan keterampilan warga Perumahan Villa Bougenville Indah Jember dalam mengaplikasikan pupuk organik cair secara tepat pada tanaman. Kegiatan dilaksanakan pada Mei 2026 dengan metode penyuluhan dan demonstrasi. Materi yang disampaikan meliputi pengenalan POC, manfaat dan keterbatasannya, prinsip pengenceran, teknik aplikasi melalui penyiraman media tanam dan penyemprotan daun, serta waktu aplikasi yang sesuai. Demonstrasi dilakukan secara langsung menggunakan tanaman dalam pot agar peserta dapat memahami tahapan aplikasi secara praktis. Warga menunjukkan respons positif dan antusias selama kegiatan, terutama pada sesi demonstrasi dan diskusi mengenai penggunaan POC untuk tanaman pekarangan. Kegiatan ini diharapkan dapat mendorong warga untuk menerapkan pemupukan organik cair secara lebih tepat, aman, dan berkelanjutan dalam budidaya tanaman di lingkungan rumah.

Abstract

Soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) seeds are susceptible to deterioration during storage, resulting in reduced viability and vigor. Matriconditioning plus, which combines controlled hydration with beneficial microorganisms, offers a promising approach to improve seed quality. This study evaluated the effects of different matrix materials and Trichoderma harzianum on the physiological quality of expired soybean seeds. A completely randomized factorial design was used with two factors: matrix type (rice husk charcoal, sawdust, and vermiculite) and T. harzianum application (without and with T. harzianum). Seed quality was evaluated based on germination percentage, mean germination time (MGT), vigor index, germination rate, and germination uniformity. The combination of sawdust and T. harzianum produced the highest germination percentage (68.75%), vigor index (44.75%), germination rate (18.26% etmal⁻¹), and germination uniformity (40.75%). Sawdust was the most effective matrix material, while T. harzianum significantly improved germination percentage, vigor index, germination rate, and germination uniformity but did not affect MGT. These findings indicate that matriconditioning plus using sawdust and T. harzianum is an effective seed invigoration technique for improving the viability and vigor of expired soybean seeds.

Abstract

Eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) is an important horticultural crop in tropical and subtropical regions. However, suboptimal seed germination and poor early seedling growth often impede successful crop establishment. Seed priming with potassium nitrate (KNO₃) is widely recognized for enhancing seed performance, but prolonged soaking in priming solutions can limit oxygen availability during imbibition, potentially inhibiting metabolic activity and reducing priming efficiency. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of aerated KNO₃ priming in improving germination and seedling vigor of eggplant. A completely randomized design with seven treatments, including control, KNO₃ concentrations (0%, 1%, 2%), and priming conditions (with and without aeration), was applied. Results showed that seed priming significantly improved germination parameters, stem diameter, and dry mass. The best germination performance was observed in seeds primed with 2% KNO₃ under aeration with 88.50% germination, the highest germination rate index (23.08), and the shortest mean germination time (3.38 days). While priming did not significantly affect plant height at 35 days after planting, and the concentration of KNO₃ did not significantly affect the seedling performances, aeration significantly increased stem diameter and seedling dry mass. These findings suggest that aerated priming with 2% KNO₃ can be recommended as an effective technique to enhance germination performance and seedling vigor in eggplant.

Abstract

Permasalahan ketersediaan dan tingginya harga pupuk menjadi tantangan utama bagi banyak petani, termasuk di Desa Seputih, Kecamatan Mayang, Kabupaten Jember. Biaya operasional budidaya yang tidak sebanding dengan hasil produksi menjadi kendala serius dalam meningkatkan produktivitas pertanian. Melalui pendekatan konsep zero waste, pemanfaatan potensi limbah hasil pertanian diharapkan dapat menjadi solusi yang efektif untuk mengatasi persoalan ini. Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan wawasan dan keterampilan petani dalam mengolah limbah produksi benih dan kotoran ternak menjadi pupuk organik yang lebih bernilai guna dan bernilai ekonomi. Metode pelaksanaan kegiatan meliputi survei potensi desa, sosialisasi manfaat pupuk organik, pelatihan pembuatan pupuk organik padat dan cair, serta evaluasi menggunakan kuesioner. Hasil evaluasi menunjukkan peningkatan signifikan dalam pengetahuan dan keterampilan petani setelah mengikuti kegiatan ini. Hal ini ditunjukkan dengan 40% petani telah mulai mencoba memproduksi pupuk organik secara mandiri. Diharapkan, kegiatan ini dapat mendorong keberlanjutan praktik pengolahan limbah di tingkat petani, sehingga mereka tidak hanya mampu memenuhi kebutuhan pupuk sendiri, tetapi juga mendukung produksi benih hortikultura yang ramah lingkungan dan bebas limbah.

Abstract

Kegiatan penyuluhan tabulampot di Perumahan Villa Bougenville Indah Jember bertujuan untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan dan kepedulian warga dalam pemenuhan gizi keluarga melalui urban farming. Melalui penyuluhan, demonstrasi praktik, dan diskusi interaktif, warga memperoleh pemahaman mengenai teknik budidaya tanaman buah dalam pot (tabulampot). Respon positif dan antusiasme peserta menunjukkan bahwa kegiatan ini efektif dalam mendorong penerapan tabulampot sebagai upaya peningkatan kemandirian pangan rumah tangga. Kegiatan ini diharapkan menjadi langkah awal pengembangan lingkungan yang hijau, produktif, dan berkelanjutan.

Abstract

The improvement of cucumber cultivation practices, such as proper seed selection and appropriate fertilization, has the potential to enhance seed production and quality. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the most effective combination of potassium and boron fertilizer doses to improve seed production and pollen viability in cucumber. A randomized block design (RCBD) with two treatment factors was used. The first factor was potassium dose, applied at three levels: 100 kg/ha, 200 kg/ha, and 300 kg/ha. The second factor was boron dose, applied at four levels: 0 kg/ha, 1 kg/ha, 2 kg/ha, and 3 kg/ha. Data were analyzed using ANOVA, with a comprehensive set of observation parameters. In conclusion, no significant interaction was observed between potassium and boron treatments across all observed parameters. The treatment of 300 kg/ha potassium had a highly significant effect on the number of seeds per fruit (342.53), the number of filled seeds per fruit (289.93), seed weight per fruit (7.13 g), filled seed weight per fruit (8.24 g), and seed production per hectare (253.64 kg). Boron fertilizer treatment at a dose of 1 kg/ha had a highly significant effect on the time to emergence of male flowers (23.44 DAP), the time to emergence of female flowers (26.33 DAP), filled seed weight per fruit (7.86 g), and seed production per hectare (241.72 kg).
