Abstract

This study was aimed at finding out: the types of error of plural nouns on students’ sentences made by the seventh graders at one of junior high school in Palembang. This study used descriptive quantitative research. The data were collected from four classes of seventh grade students with a total of 129 students by using cluster random sampling. This study focused on analyzing the students’ errors in plural nouns, thus some procedures of error analysis was applied, they were: collection, identification, and classification. The frequencies of errors were calculated in percentage. Based on the result of the analysis, there were 2.057 errors found in students’ answers. Furthermore, it was found that the students made 237 (11.52%) errors in omission, 506 (24.60%) errors in addition, 1314 (63.88%) errors in misformation as the highest one. Keywords:  Error Analysis; Plural Nouns

Abstract

AnEnglish club has many important goals to support the fluency of students in mastering English skills, especially in speaking skills. Sometimes, it brings positive and negative drawbacks to the students with some activities provided. The study aimed to find out how students felt about the different types of speaking activities that were hosted by the English club. Qualitative research approaches were utilized in this case study approach to research. The participants were three students who were members of the English club at one of senior high schools in Palembang. The information was acquired by conducting an interview that was semi-structured and using open-ended questions. The data were evaluated by employing a methodology known as theme analysis. The outcomes of the study revealed that (a) debate activity did not improve speakers' pronunciation, comprehension, or grammar, (b) speech activity assisted the students' speaking components, which included pronunciation, vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, and grammar in the process of speaking, (c) students were able to practice English speaking skills such as pronunciation, vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, and grammar through story-based activities, (d) activities related to newscasting did not aid the student in instructing and learning vocabulary.

Abstract

Metacognitive strategies are widely used by students in learning activities, often without them realizing it. They become one of crucial aspects for learners in comprehending the academic reading text. In this study, the writer describes students’ metacognitive strategies in reading comprehension. A quantitative survey was used as the design of the study. A questionnaire was the instrument used to collect the data in order to have a description of how students applied metacognitive strategies in reading and to what extent their awareness of metacognitive reading strategies was used in academic reading. There were 285 students in the English study program who filled out the questionnaire for the Survey of Reading Strategies Awareness (SORS). Metacognitive awareness of reading strategies used by college students in reading academic texts in English was problem solving (PROB), support (SUP) and global (GLOB). For EFL students, problem solving was the most used strategy. Students and other readers should adapt these reading methods and be guided by lecturers in using different methods. Abstract

ABSTRAKPersaingan untuk melanjutkan studi ke jenjang  yang lebih tinggi merupakan tantangan bagi siswa siswa khususnya yang telah duduk di kelas 12 tingkat sekolah menengah atas terlebih dalam era globalisai dan revolusi industri seperti saat ini. Memiki keterampilan berbahasa asing khususnya bahasa Inggris menjadi suatu keharusan. Tolak ukur pencapaian tersebut salah satunya yaitu dengan memiliki nilai TOEFL. Meski TOEFL bukan sesuatu yang asing, namun pemahaman siswa tentang pentingnya TOEFL, kegunaan, jenis-jenis dan bentuk TOEFL itu sendiri masih perlu ditingkatkan. Dengan pengetahuan yang tepat siswa-siswi yang akan mengambil tes TOEFL nantinya dapat menentukan jenis tes yang tepat serta materi-materi persiapan belajar yang tepat sehingga dapat memperoleh hasil yang memusakan pula. Dilandasi hal tersebut Tim PKM prodi PBI UIN Raden Fatah Palembang melaksanakan kegiatan pengabdian pengenalan TOEFL ITP sebagai persiapan studi lanjut. Kegiatan ini bertujuan untuk memperkuat pengetahuan Siswa-siswa sekolah terkait TOEFL ITP termasuk didalamnya bentuk-bentuk tes TOEFL, bentuk soal, serta manfaat dan pentingnya memiliki nilai TOEFL. Kegiatan ini dilaksanakan secara luring dalam bentuk pelatihan singkat. Kegiatan yang diikuti oleh 36 siswa-siswi sekolah mitra ini disambut dengan antusias dan membawa hasil yang positif dalam menguatkan siswa siswi untuk mengikuti tes TOEFL yang tepat sebagai persiapan studi lanjut kejenjang yang lebih tinggi. Kata kunci: jenis TOEFL; persiapan studi lanjut; nilai TOEFL. ABSTRACTCompetition to continue studies to a higher level is a challenge for students, especially for those who are already in grade 12 of high school, particularly in the current era of globalization and industrial revolution. Having foreign language skills, especially in English, has become a necessity. One of the benchmarks for achieving this is by having a TOEFL score. Although TOEFL is not unfamiliar, students' understanding of the importance, uses, types, and formats of TOEFL itself still needs improvement. With the right knowledge, students who will take the TOEFL test can determine the appropriate type of test and the right study materials to prepare, thus achieving satisfying results. Based on this, the PKM team from the English Language Education Program at UIN Raden Fatah Palembang conducted a community service activity to introduce TOEFL ITP as preparation for further studies. The purpose of this activity is to strengthen the students' knowledge about TOEFL ITP, including its various test formats, question types, as well as the benefits and importance of having a TOEFL score. The activity was carried out through offline training in a short format. Enthusiastically participated by 36 students from partner schools, this activity yielded positive results in empowering students to take the appropriate TOEFL test as preparation for higher education. Keywords: types of TOEFL; preparation for further studies; TOEFL score.

Abstract

Speaking is one of the most essential skills students must acquire, but they may experience anxiety when communicating in English. If a student is nervous about speaking, it could make it harder for them to do well. Hence, this research examined the correlation and influence of speaking anxiety and speaking achievement among a sample of tenth grade students with 30 students in a state vocational school in Palembang. The participants were selected using cluster random selection. The researchers utilized the Foreign Language Speaking Anxiety Questionnaire (FLSAQ) to assess speaking anxiety levels. Additionally, a speaking assessment was conducted to assess students' proficiency in speaking. The result revealed no statistically significant relationship between speaking anxiety and speaking achievement, as determined by (sig. 2-tailed) > 0.05. The result suggested that H0_1 was accepted and Hα_1 was rejected.

Abstract

Writing is one of the important skills in learning English, writing can provide useful information for other people who need it. This study aimed to investigate the difficulties faced by eighth grade students in one of State Junior High school in Palembang in writing recount texts. It outlines the qualitative research approach, specifically a case study design, used to explore the difficulties faced by eighth farde students in writing recount texts. Homogenous sampling method was employed to select participants from the eighth grade class, four students were selected as participants who have difficulties in writing recount texts. Data collection involved interviews. Thematic analysis technique was used in analyzing the data. The result of this study showed that students encountered difficulties when writing recount texts such as lack of understanding of recount texts generic structure, lack of grammar mastery, lack of vocabulary, lack of undestanding mechanics use. Improvement from teachers and proactive efforts of students will help contribute to enhanced writing skills and solve students’ difficulties in writing recount texts.

Abstract

This qualitative study examines the challenges that students at a private Islamic junior high school in Palembang encounter when learning to speak, with an emphasis on the viewpoints of the teachers. Data collection involved structured interviews and classroom observations to gather insights into students' challenges. Participants included teachers and students selected through purposeful sampling. Thematic analysis was employed to analyze the data, revealing themes such as students' fear of making mistakes, difficulty in language comprehension, and the use of native language in learning. The importance of fostering a positive and inclusive learning atmosphere where students feel comfortable taking linguistic risks and expressing themselves freely is emphasized in the conclusion. Strategies such as providing targeted instruction in phonetics and vocabulary, and balancing the use of the native language to support English language acquisition, are essential. This research contributes to understanding the complexities of language learning and provides insights for educators to enhance students' speaking skills effectively
