Abstract

This article focuses on the discussion of Islamic teachings that were used for political purposes during the Sultanate of Banten. The sultans of Banten, in order to perpetuate their power, often used terms taken from Islam or words derived from Arabic. Their original names were originally taken from non-Arabic languages and changed to Arabic names, such as Hasanuddin whose real name is Sabakingkin. Therefore, it is necessary to explore how the Banten kingdom adopted Islamic teachings in carrying out its government and what the further implications for the people of Banten are. As an essay that seeks to reveal past events, this paper uses the historical method whose data is obtained from library sources, among others. At the end of the discussion, this article concludes that the kingdom of Banten changed the names of non-Arab kings to Arabic names. This can be seen, for example, in the name of the founder of the Banten kingdom, Hasanuddin. Hasanuddin was originally named Prince Sabakingking. Then, royal titles also use Arabic terms, such as Maulana or Sultan. To get the title of sultan, the king sent a special envoy to Mecca with the aim of meeting with the Great Sharif. Thus, the first king to receive the title of sultan was Sultan Abdulmafakhir Mahmud 'Abdul Qadir (1596-1651), who was subsequently used by the kings after him. Sultan Abdul Qadir's real name is Prince Ratu. These royal policies which were thick with Islam, furthermore, had implications for the people of Banten. The people of Banten are known as people who are fanatical about Islam and find it more difficult to accept new things that come from outside.

Abstract

This article discusses the nature of human beings as God's most perfect creatures, who have two dimensions: physical (originating from the earth) and spiritual (originating from God). These two dimensions complement each other, where the body tends to materialise and the spirit to spirituality. A complete self-understanding will bring humans closer to God. Mansur al-Hallaj, a Sufi figure, described the union between man and God through the concept of al-Hullul, which is the fusion of the nature of al-Lahut (divinity) and al-Nasut (humanity).

Abstract

Ma’rifah is an important concept in the tradition of Islamic thought that refers to a deeper knowledge or understanding of God, the self, and the universe. In this context, ma’rifah is not only understood as theoretical knowledge, but also as a spiritual experience that leads to intuitive and inner awareness. The purpose of this journal is to discuss the various dimensions of ma’rifah in the perspective of Sufism and Islamic philosophy, and how this concept relates to achieving a servant's closeness to God. This article also explores the relationship between reason, heart, and revelation in the process of achieving ma’rifah, emphasizing the importance of personal experience in a Muslim's spiritual journey. In this discussion, the author refers to classical works and contemporary thought that raise the issue of ma’rifah, providing a more comprehensive perspective on its meaning and practice in everyday life. Thus, this study is expected to contribute to a deeper understanding of the concept of ma’rifah and its relevance in the context of contemporary Islamic spirituality.

Abstract

Sufism has many meanings, both in terms of language and terminology. However, in general, Sufism refers to simple behavior, staying away from worldly desires, and people who always worship and draw closer to Allah. Historically, a group of Orientalists thought that Sufism came from Christian sources. However, in Islam, the emergence of Sufism has occurred along with the growth and development of the Islamic religion itself, starting from the time of the Prophet Muhammad SAW and there are several phases, namely the first and second centuries of the Hijriyah, in the third and fourth centuries of the Hijriyah, in the fifth century of the Hijriyah, the sixth, seventh and eighth centuries of the Hijriyah and in the ninth, tenth centuries and after. In Indonesia, the development of Sufism can be said to have been influenced by Persia (Iran) and India. This article was written with the aim of understanding the meaning of Sufism, both in terms of language and terms put forward by experts, the history of the emergence of Sufism, and the development of Sufism in Indonesia. The method used in this article is the Literature Study Method or Literature Review.

Abstract

Modern life, which is full of materialism and hedonism, has caused a crisis of meaning in life, moral degradation, and a weakening of spiritual character in society. This study aims to examine the role of the hadith of the Prophet Muhammad SAW, especially the concept of zuhud, in building the spiritual character of Muslims amid the challenges of the times. This research employs a qualitative approach using thematic hadith analysis and grounded theory, with primary data sourced from digital hadith collections and secondary literature from books and scientific journals. The results of the study indicate that spiritual character is the main foundation for the formation of morality, ethics, and inner peace in individuals. The concept of zuhud in the Prophet's hadith does not teach total rejection of the world, but rather emphasizes self-control from excessive love of material things and prioritizes the values of the hereafter. Zuhud values such as simplicity, contentment, and orientation toward the hereafter have proven relevant in shaping an integrity-based personality, strengthening social empathy, and enhancing decision-making quality grounded in Islamic teachings. Thus, the implementation of zuhud values through an understanding of the Prophet's hadith serves as a strategic solution in building a strong and harmonious spiritual character in the modern era.
