Abstract

Water balance calculations can describe water conditions in an area. Climatic conditions and soil characteristics will affect the water balance in an area, including the karst areas which is vulnerable to droughts. This study analyzes the capacity of the soil to store water and calculates the regional water balance. By using the Soil Moisture Equipment Corp at a pressure of 0.33 atm, the field capacity of the soil and a pressure of 15 atm will be known to obtain the permanent wilting point value. The regional water balance was calculated using the Thornthwaite-Mather method. Research conducted in the karst area of Maros Regency shows that the available water pore value with very low criteria so that it affects the available water capacity. The water balance of the karst region shows a surplus in November-June and a deficit in July-October. The total value of surplus is 1296 mm/year and deficit is 370 mm/year.

Abstract

Infiltration plays an essential role in increasing the soil water content as a part of the hydrological cycle. Infiltration affects surface runoff and soil conservation. It also determines the sustainability of the groundwater system. Heavy rain intensity exceeding the infiltration capacity will result in surface runoff, and excessive surface runoff will cause soil erosion.  This study aims to investigate the suitable infiltration rate model in the Mediterranean soil of clay textured with various soil conditions. Infiltration rate measurement employed a double-ring infiltrometer in soil without and with tillage. The applied infiltration rate model was an empirical model and the function of time, which includes the Kostiakov, Horton, and Philip Models. The results demonstrated that the Mediterranean soil infiltration rate with a clay texture was 0.91 cm/min and was relatively higher in the soil without tillage. The suitable infiltration rate model to be applied in soil conditions without and with tillage is the Kostiakov Model f = 0.700 t-0.25  and f = 0.682 t-0.22, respectively. The Kostiakov model is the most suitable infiltration rate model in Mediterranean textured clay, without tillage conditions, with a determination value of 0.988 and a deviation value of 0.005. Keywords: Horton model, Philip model, Infiltrometer; Kostiakov model, Tillage

Abstract

Abstract

Rice is a major commodity as a source of carbohydrates for the Indonesian people. Efforts to increase rice production have been made by the government, but these have not been matched by optimal harvesting and post-harvest handling, resulting in high yield losses of nearly 10%. Data from the Central Statistics Agency (2024) shows that rice harvest losses reach 9.5% during harvesting and 4.8% during the post-harvest stage, which has the potential to reduce national grain production, currently recorded at around 65 million tonnes of grain. The Tompobulu sub-district, Bantaeng Regency, has around 1,000 hectares of rice fields at an altitude of ±500 metres above sea level with small plots and a terraced pattern. The main problems faced by organic rice farmers in this area are low knowledge of cultivation, organic fertiliser production, and good post-harvest handling. These conditions cause high yield losses, both quantitatively and qualitatively, which do not provide economic incentives for farmers to increase their income. Paddy with high moisture content is also easily damaged and increases yield losses. Appropriate and location-specific post-harvest handling is needed to reduce yield losses and improve grain quality. In areas with narrow land ownership and hilly topography, appropriate technology in the form of power threshers is a suitable solution, as modern harvesting equipment such as combine harvesters cannot operate effectively in terraced rice fields.
