Abstract

Prior research on roof tile waste treatment has attempted to find the appropriate technology to reuse old roof tile waste by create wall cladding materials from it. Through exploration and experimentation, a treatment method has been discovered to transform the tile fragments into artificial stone that resembles the shape of coral. This baked clay artificial stone material is then processed as a decorative element for vertical surfaces that are not load-bearing, such as on the interior and exterior walls of a building. Before applying the fragments as wall tiles, several steps must be taken: 1) Blunting, which changes the look of tile fragments using a machine created specifically to blunt the roof-tile fragment edges, 2) Closing the pores of the blunted fragments as a finishing step that can be done with a transparent coat or a solid color of paint, 3) Planting the transformed roof-tile fragments on a prepared tile body made of concrete. In this study, the second phase is done using the method of ceramics glazing at a temperature of 700 °C. The finishing step is the strength of this product because it produces a rich color artificial pebble.

Abstract

The trend of thrifting has exacerbated the problem of fabric waste in Indonesia. Therefore, sustainable efforts are needed, such as activating fabric waste processing activities in the community. The Gulon Asri Jebres waste bank is a place for community service activities carried out by the UNS interior design study program to develop interior products that have more value for fabric waste materials. This community service activity emphasizes the development of interior product designs made from fabric waste. Development activities are accompanied by lecturers and interior design students from the start of making sketches until later they become ready-to-sell products using a design thinking approach. The products produced include chairs, laundry baskets, curtains, cushions, and plant hangings.

Abstract

Jerami padi merupakan salah satu material serat alam paling berlimpah di Indonesia. Dari data FAO 2018 apabila dikalkulasikan berdasarkan produksi beras yang dihasilkan, maka jerami  sebagai salah satu luaran hasil pertanian secara total terdapat sekitar 76,4 juta ton. Melihat dari potensi yang dikembangkan di negara Asia Timur seperti Jepang dan Korea Selatan, dengan kuantitas tersebut jerami padi yang melimpah di Indonesia, memiliki peluang untuk dikembangkan menjadi beberapa produk alternatif salah satunya yaitu kerajinan tangan. Oleh karena itu beberapa analisa karakter material jerami padi dilakukan dalam penelitian ini sebagai pondasi dalam pengembangannya menjadi berbagai alternatif desain kerajinan. Sebagai variabel, analisa yang dilakukan berkaitan dengan unsur kimiawi, kekuatan, dimensi, serta visual. Sebagai hasil analisa, jerami padi memiliki karakter struktur yang kuat, visual yang berbeda antara pra dan pasca panen, dimensi yang tinggi, bersifat cushion, mampu dilaminasi, serta mampu menjadi isolator yang baik terhadap panas. Oleh karena itu sebagai alternatif luaran produk kerajinan yang bisa dibuat dari material jerami sangat variatif, baik untuk produk yang bersifat non-struktural maupun struktural.
